I am not sharing the video of the elderly man that is being circulated online. His name is Abdul Samad, he was kidnapped by locals who took him to an isolated place, assaulted him, and forced him to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and ‘Vande Mataram’. This is majoritarian Hindu terror.
Lynching: A Primer

1. Lynching is not just punishment without due process; it is punishment where no crime exists.
2. The mob exists mainly in having a defense against reason. The most blatant of its tyranny is to reduce all history to the violence it can dispense.
3. The mob is not spontaneous. It is always assembled and organized for a kill.
4. The mob is not irrational. It is rendered useful because it is profitable to kill.
5. Lynching is an act of belonging, claiming authority through racial, religious and casteist violence. Nothing builds group cohesion like violence.
6. India was always its mob. Lynching in India is not new. These incidences of violence are not against the grain. A cursory look at the caste violence against Muslims, Dalits and other minorities demonstrates that this is how crowd draws their power.
7. The pogroms in India also have a long history of mob violence. Leading up to the Bombay, Gujarat and the Sikh violence - pamphlets were circulated, often instructing men to commit crimes as a group as this would make it harder to both collect evidence and prosecute.
8. Lynching is about pushing the law to its farthest limits of impotence, where justice is rendered impossible. It is also about creating hierarchies of violence and policing the boundaries of human civility.
9. Lynching is about majoritarian power, the unchecked authority of the majority. It also represents the ultimate control over the body of another, through the mere whim of the other.
10. This is not a shape of things to come. This is not the event that foreshadows the decay. That moment arrived a long time ago.
11. Lynchings are a reproduction of supremacy. Photographs of the dead being circulated is a visual symbol of majoritarian power asserting itself.

Pressatatement from @jennyrowena,

Hany Babu, an undertrial prisoner in the #BhimaKoregaon case, who has been in custody since July 2020 without trial, has developed an acute eye infection in Taloja Jail.
“He has little or no vision in his left eye due to the swelling, which has spread to the cheek, ear and forehead, compromising other vital organs as well, and posing a significant risk to his life if it spreads to the brain.”
“He is in agonising pain and is unable to sleep or perform daily chores. Due to an acute water shortage in the prison, he does not have access to clean water to even bathe his eye and is forced to dress his eye with soiled towels.”

The news coming from India is dire as every day brings news of more death and devastation.
I hope to use the book and the conversations as a way to center on what's happening in India.
This is not a moment for celebration, but I hope the conversations, arguments, and ideas in the book resonates and opens new possibilities for dissent and the future of borders and citizenship.

So @Tejasvi_Surya say he read a list given to him, claims that he simply read out the names he was given.
Who gave you the list, and why read an unverified list ?
Your apology still doesn’t count for the humiliation or harassment you put them through.

As India reeled from the devastating covid-19 deaths, it censored critical content on social media. @project_polis's @watchthestate was temporarily restricted twice in one week. @kiccovich and I write about this censorship for the @washingtonpost
washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/…
Since March, as the Indian health infrastructure completely crumbled, social media platforms have become the de facto helplines where helpless citizens ask for help and offer mutual support.
To maintain a lived memory of the present and gather evidence to hold the state accountable, our account has been collecting and sharing instances of state violence from reliable news sources.
