So my Berlin-Belgrade 🚆🚌 trip is ON! 🎉

Berlin-Vienna-Budapest 🚆 booked (sleeping car)
Budapest-Berlin 🚆 booked (seat, overnight)

But what about the other bits?
Budapest-Kelebia-Subotica

There is 1 direct train a day

I can book it as far as Kelebia on the MÁV website, but I assume just going to the ticket office at Keleti and buying to Budapest-Subotica is easiest

Novi Sad-Beograd

Due to engineering works there are no trains, so I need a bus...

There are buses run by LASTA, according to Balkan Viator, bookable online - but could I just buy tickets on the spot?
I also assume this goes from the bus station next to the rail station in Novi Sad, and to the main bus station (that's on the tram network, just across the Sava) in Beograd

What would you advise here @Fabian_24trains @JugCerovic?
And then for the return I basically have to retrace my steps...

It's going to be... an interesting journey!

If you're one of those people whining at me "I'm not going to sit 4 hours on a train, I'll fly 1 hour instead", then listen up

A worked example, for Berlin-München

From where I used to live at Yorckstrasse, Berlin, to when my old friend @ronpatz used to work at Uni München

Buses have been eliminated here - these are just train/S-Bahn/U-Bahn options

My fastest connection is 4 hours 35 mins

3 hours 56 mins of that is on one direct train, that has wifi and a restaurant on board
If I don't manage to get one of the extra fast "Sprinter" ICEs, I have a regular ICE that makes more stops at other times of the day, and at least 1 train per hour - trip time is slightly longer 4 hours 55 mins, of which 4 hours 23 is in the ICE

Today I embark on a new bicycle tour project… #GrenzeBerlinOst

This is a sort of counterpart of the well known Berliner #Mauerweg I recently finished - a cycle path that encircles the old West Berlin berlin.de/mauer/en/wall-…
My #GrenzeBerlinOst route follows the border between what was East Berlin and the neighbouring state of Brandenburg

I doubt anyone has tried to cycle this, and it’s definitely not signposted!

So, for anyone nuts enough to try, I now think I know how to do Berlin-Belgrade by 🚅, during the easing of COVID restrictions...

Good news: you can do it for €48,19 single when I need to go (not a typo!) but if you want a bed in the night train it gets horribly costly!

A client in Belgrade 🇷🇸 is pushing me to actually attend their event in person at the end of June...

I'll write about the whole effort to book this at some point, but just one part is so ridiculous it deserves a 🧵 of its own

Why railways can't fix this is 🤯
The part of the trip here uniquely concerns the Kraków Główny 🇵🇱 - Budapest Keleti 🇭🇺 night train - EN 407 / 477

(Tangent: yes, I know this isn't the most logical train to take, but I have to, as other viable services aren't running)

At the moment, due to COVID, where DB lists sleeping cars as running is not always accurate, but Vagonweb thinks it does

In the 2 years since the 2019 EP elections I think the EP has struggled for 5 reasons

1️⃣ The result of the EP election itself - now you need 3 groups for a majority (was 2 before), and the turnover of MEPs was the highest ever - 58% new MEPs
2️⃣ von der Leyen being imposed by the European Council was a hit for the EP. The EPP would sooner have had Weber, or Timmermans or Vestager, than von der Leyen
