A non-reset reset, a cyber Cold War, a big yawn

Post-spectacle, how do we make sense of the Biden-Putin meeting?

@Mpolymer @john_sipher and others weigh in via @RenewGreatPower /1

“Ultimately, I believe that Biden did well and America comes out stronger post-summit. He raised issues that matter, that represent core American values. But to think that this will change Putin’s behavior in any discernible measure is pure fantasy,” says @Mpolymer /2
“Why give Putin the gift of being treated as an equal on the world stage? Why risk ‘re-setting’ relations that could lock-in Putin’s ill-gotten gains? … the Kremlin itself that could change the tone any time it wanted to?” says @john_sipher /3
“It seems obvious that we can all agree now we are officially in a Cyber Cold War,” offers a former CIA ops officer. “The veiled threats & back and forth between Biden & Putin … were eerily reminiscent of the classic US-Soviet face-offs in the 1960s and ‘70s.” /4
A former European intelligence officer: “Right now everyone in Europe is looking at Biden, trying to figure out what he’s going to do or not do. Maybe he himself doesn’t yet know himself. But he sets the course for what comes next.” /5
A former US intel officer: “If Biden & the Democrats stick to a ‘low expectations’ approach with Russia, and are willing to be tough w/ Putin, then that will be good… but the Dems always seem to lose focus w/ Russia. We need containment. Maybe it’ll happen. Fingers crossed.” /6
“The message [from Biden] could have been: ‘China will eat you for dinner and we will not stand in the way.’ It would be an interesting development,” says a senior European official. /7
From Ukraine: “The Biden-Putin meeting was all about de-escalation. If Biden is the engine of this, it will ruin what is left of any US influence in geopolitical affairs [after Presidents Trump and Obama].” /8
Overall, a lot of uncertainty that echoes from memories of the “reset” years, & skepticism that there is will to confront an adversary that has shown little willingness to be deterred from their course of action. But also some reluctant hope

Lithuania granting asylum to their Afghan interpreters:

FM @GLandsbergis: “they’re facing threats over their cooperation with the alliance”

PM @IngridaSimonyte: “it's a matter of honor for the state” to keep their word

US must move faster. Get them out

lrt.lt/en/news-in-eng…
A group of interpreters who had helped Lithuanian forces sent a letter to the Lithuanian govt:

“The situation is much worse in Afghanistan with the recent announcement of US/NATO troops withdrawal. The Taliban might take over more control of Afghanistan territory…
… and the interpreters as former collaborators with the ‘occupational armed forces’ are the first target for them…
This is the matter of life and death for former Lithuanian armed forces interpreters…

At press conference, Biden says he agrees with Putin that US-Russia relations are at a low point, which has to do with whether or not Putin wants to agree with international norms.
Biden says he told Putin he was going to check out intelligence on elex interference, hacking and see if he did those things — and he did. Russia did those things and we responded.
The usual “oh we can work together on climate change” stuff.

More on this later — this isn’t how this is going to work. Ditto with China.

As Lukashenko cracks down, Lithuania steps up to help the Belarusian opposition — and finds itself the target of new hybrid measures

This includes “irregular migration” — aka Belarus state-backed human trafficking into Europe

“Lukashenko must think this is the way Europe will stop putting pressure on his murderous regime or helping the opposition,” Lithuanian FM @GLandsbergis tells @RenewGreatPower. “Yes, we might need assistance… that won’t make us back down from defending the right course.” /2
Over the past few weeks, hundreds of migrants, primarily from Iraq, have crossed the border from Belarus into Lithuania. Lithuania’s government says this is a targeted campaign against Lithuania using state-backed human trafficking schemes sponsored by Belarusian authorities. /3

My sister somehow convinced my father, who has spent the last 14 months isolated with not a single person under the age of 60, to take my niece and nephew to Dave & Buster’s.

Alone. By himself. Into the 4th ring of hell.
So now, in retaliation, my father has told the kids that they really really want to watch JAWS tonight — “it’s an excellent summer movie, I’ll tell you what.” 🦈 🎥
Ok so we are actually watching with Jaws with the kids

There is a pleasing amount of screaming

I am very glad I get to sleep in a different house tonight

Does anyone know what these critters are? This one is small but have seen up to 1/2” long. Actual color is very wine/purple with yellow-green spots on sides of creepy wiggly body. It waves its front whiskers around like it wants to get in your ear and eat your brain. Tiny aliens.
Guys it’s not an earwig, which has butt forceps. This thing is purple and has face wavers.

Close to this 👇 from images, but not as horned looking
Ok seems like some kind of lacewing larvae, probably brown lacewings — and good news they eat aphids and not brains.

So alien looking tho yuck

Lunch break garden walk:

Currently obsessed with the tiny adorable curlycues in the dandelion greens blossoms
This lucky garden spider has a great spot in the center of the crepe myrtle which occasionally gets this ethereal lighting
Well helloooooo red amaranth growing in the corn! (Wild seeds from last year, but my rule is if it grows, it stays)

They both grow tall. They can be friends.
