1) It was the late 1960s and Dr. VP Sidhan worked as a doctor who treated skin ailments for the Indian Railways laborers.
2)However, he came from the respected Cholayil family of Ayurvedic practitioners and also had a deep knowledge of Ayurveda.
3) Dr. VP Sidhan saw that the workers who cleaned waste off the railway tracks suffered from several skin diseases.
4) He felt really bad for them and started giving them an Ayurvedic oil to cure their skin diseases.
5) The Ayurvedic oil was extremely effective and healed the skin disorders of several patients.
6) As his Ayurvedic oil started gaining popularity his friends advised him to turn it into a soap. They felt it would be a great skincare solution and also be easier to use.
7) Dr. VP Sidhan liked the idea and started making soaps in 1969. He named his soap brand Medimix.
8) Initially, the soaps were available only in prescribed products in very few pharmacies in Chennai.
9) Soon, the word about the effectiveness of the soap spread and Dr. VP Sidhan seeing it as a good business opportunity launched it for the public.
10) The Medimix soaps were unique as they were completely handmade unlike most other soap brands in India.
11) When the soap’s ability to heal most skin problems spread by word of mouth, Sidhan began manufacturing them in the early 70s in a small rented building in Perambur with just one employee. Medimix largely remained a prescription product during this period.
12) In its early advertisement days, Medimix used the tagline "Doctors Prescribe" which gave genuineness to the product.
13) Dr. Sidhan also focused on selling soaps to hotels that made them popular among people who visited hotels frequently and helped in adding new customers.
14) Medimix is more than 50 years old now and has continued to grow over the decades.
15) It has also launched other personal care products like hand wash, face wash, body wash, etc.
16) Today, Medimix exports to more than 30 countries and is said to be the largest selling handmade Ayurvedic soap brand in the world.
17)The group bifurcated recently into Cholayil Private Limited, managed by Pradeep Cholayil (Sidhan’s son) in the north, and in the south, managed by Anoop.
18) The AVA Group manufactures the green classic Medimix bars and a few variants in transparent glycerine bars.
19) Jade-green Medimix soap bar is a familiar product on the toiletries rack in most Indian households.
20) It is also the hotelier’s common choice when it comes to complementary soaps, tossed in a mix of personal care products.
21) Bonus Fun Fact: The classic Medimax soap bar takes around 8 days to be manufactured and made ready for the market.
