The other organisation that brought down the Delhi administration to its knees was the fanatical Jamaat-e-Islami. It would marshal 1000s of the faithful for intimidating street-marches waving green flags if some "demand" was not met.
In that era, Jamat-e-Islami's "journal," titled RADIANCE was dutifully read by Congress ministers and politicians. Guess who were on the editorial board of Radiance? Former Prime Minister I.K. Gujral, Khushwant Singh and P.N. Haksar.
Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and later Rajiv, would shamelessly visit the Imam Bukhari to mollify him. At election time, she would first take his "blessings" before going to the people of India.
I'm saying all this for the benefit of a generation which has absolutely no clue of what "real" Congress rule looked like on the ground. </END>
