State Dept spokesman Ned Price says he does not have anything to say on the alleged US govt seizure of Iran Press TV website domain, but says he thinks the Department of Justice may have something to provide on that shortly
It has been almost two hours since @StateDept said @TheJusticeDept should be able to provide some info on this shortly, but they have not said anything, despite multiple inquiries. Baffling.
A CNN Justice Dept correspondent cites an unnamed US “national security official,” presumably from @TheJusticeDept, saying the US seized dozens of US website domains connected to Iran. cnn.com/2021/06/22/pol…
Does not seem some of the US government people involved in Iran policy were aware of this alleged action in advance. and the public affairs rollout seems something of a disaster.
AP DOJ reporter also says US involved. Impression is DOJ public affairs admitting it to DOJ bullpen reporters, but a lot of people in broader US govt Iran policy were out of the loop, and the decision/public comms on it in dispute
five hours. still no public @TheJusticeDept explanation for the alleged action. embarrassing.
🧵Update: Justice Dept in press release says pursuant to court orders, US today “seized 33 websites used by the Iranian Islamic Radio and Television Union (IRTVU) and 3 websites operated by Kata’ib Hizballah (KH), in violation of U.S. sanctions. ImageImage
“…Thirty-three of the websites seized today were operated by IRTVU. The 33 domains are owned by a United States company. IRTVU did not obtain a license from OFAC prior to utilizing the domain names.” ImageImage
“These website seizures were investigated by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security, Office of Export Enforcement and the FBI. The National Security Division’s Counterintelligence and Export Control Section prosecuted the seizure.”
the website seizures?
this makes it sound like the seizures are being investigated. when it was the government that seized them.
“Asst. AG John Demers for DOJ Natl Sec. Division; Special Agent in Charge J.C. (Chris) Hacker, of FBI Atlanta Field Office; & Special Agent in Charge Ariel Joshua Leinwand, of the Bureau of Industry & Security, Office of Export Enforcement’s Atlanta Office, made the announcement” Image
(what announcement?) Image
Demers is retiring in a couple days. this seemed to come out of the atlanta offices of commerce/BIS and FBI. Image
Link to DOJ press release here. justice.gov/opa/pr/united-… But I noticed something strange. I get the DOJ press release emails. This did not get emailed til 9pm tonight. But looks from DOJ website like it was supposed to go out first this morning, and got held Image
and…via @RVAwonk, DOJ has now removed the press release from its website

earlier tonight (left); now, poof (right) ImageImage
link still works for me justice.gov/opa/pr/united-…, but it seems it was removed from DOJ press release front page (left, now), as @RVAwonk noted. was there before (right) ImageImage
and it is back up. Image

Prominent Iranian reformist commentator tells #ACMideast event that Raisi press conference earlier today was a disaster. That he seemed unprepared for obvious questions, and answered as if he was still a judiciary chief.
Zibakalam says some reformists think silver lining of Raisi taking presidency is that now hardliners control every power center & have no one else to blame. Said they had already been making important strategic decisions and sending Mr. Rouhani the bill
.@borzou references FP piece foreignpolicy.com/2021/06/19/the… assessing Raisi as more of an opportunist than ideologue. But Borzou says, as we know from recent US experience to, right wing opportunists just as dangerous as right wing ideologues.

🧵Jerusalem Post: Former Mossad Chief Tamir Pardo today “said it was a massive strategic error for Netanyahu to be in open conflict with the Obama and Biden administrations over Iran.” jpost.com/middle-east/ir… by @jeremybob1
Pardo “said that Netanyahu’s policy had helped push the Trump admin to leave the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which now has led to Tehran passing the 60% nuclear enrichment level.”
He accused Netanyahu of having “top notch tactics, but zero strategy.” jpost.com/middle-east/ir…
btw, re: Pardo, Sen. Tim Kaine recounted at SFRC hearing yesterday Netanyahu trying to cancel a congressional delegation briefing with Pardo, and then-SFRC chief Corker threatening to cancel all their other meetings in Israel if Netanyahu did not let it proceed. It did.

The second Iranian presidential debate that just finished was very boring, says @fresh_sadegh, at SAIS Rethinking Iran panel. She got sense the candidates were cautioned from somewhere to stick to the framework, few of them directly answered the questions asked of them.
Many people are indifferent to this election, @fresh_sadegh says. Polls suggest maybe 40% turnout. A lot of reasons, main one: people are disappointed, don’t expect any change from the candidates put on the table. Of 7 approved candidates, none of them really represent different
groups of people. Economic problems, add to problems that already exist in society people.

as in the WaPo and CNN cases, Trump admin DOJ obtained the records in 2020, for reporting in 2017.

If one were to focus mostly on the Iranian statement tea leaves, one might expect a deal maybe later in June and some sort of implementation day in August. diplomatic.substack.com/p/iran-talks-b…
