Thirty years later, "Hunt For Red October" still goes well .... No one reviewing a classic movies channel will pass up HFRO - it is the "Roadhouse" for the thinking man. Also, probably Alec Baldwin's last serious role.
The HFRO starts well with Alec Baldwin being dropped to Heathrow in a Range Rover - at one stage, they were basically issued to naval officers as the Range Rover sat high enough that most officers could wear their cap while driving past the guard
Quite why a naval analyst would end up at the CIA and not, say, ONI, has never been explained to me, except recall reading that ONI was located in a part of US "Fedland" where local gangs exchanged gunfire outside after dark. I am sure someone will correct me here.
By the late cold war, a lot of the Soviet Navy and Air Force was drunk a lot of the time. It was only due to Soviet shortages of everything that kept ships alongside & grounded planes that stopped the Soviets from having more collisions than the Vilnius Schoolmaster could handle
As every man knows, the greatest tragedy of the HFRO series was it was never merged with "Firefox" to create a prequel cross-over thriller involving the Tupolev Blackjack bomber where Clint Eastwood & Sean Connery fought a duel to the (almost) death
So the (annoying) political commissar goes into see the Captain, ends up slipping on his tea & dying painfully....go woke, go broke(n neck). Also a useful lesson to all the junior officers viewing to only bother the Captain when the Captain is prepared to be bothered.
Red October may be a Typhoon SSBN but on any view it has a simp-cuck Wardroom. If the Captain has just taken out the Commissar then his officers owe him loyalty from here on in. Even the men who informed on Vlasov etal were also hanged by the NKVD.
Hard to believe Red October is trying to break through the GIUK gap and there are not more British ships, planes & subs patrolling. Needs to have an old Leander class smashing through the waves with a Nimrod flying overhead & a Wessex doing its wocka wocka along its patrol box
I share the general disgust of the American Admiral at Alec Baldwin. Everyone remotely sensible does really
‘When your command brief keeps it all a bit too real’
Disappointed there is not more Soviet “Bear” bomber action. On any view one of the most incredible aircraft ever built and patrol wise, one of the most annoying

Tupolev complaining that his orders were 7 hours old is really an indictment on his comcen and signals yeomen. Tupolev thoroughly deserves his fate if only for the abysmal command state & routines of his boat. Ramius was doing the Soviet Navy a favour
The doctor being the only real believing communist is the least surprising aspect of HFRO. Doctors are basically wharfies with stethoscopes. No one, really, should miss their slow replacement by robots who will be on time & listen to their patients.
Sam Neill letting his Wardroom fight in front of the Captain is also pretty poor form, albeit unsurprising, given Sam Neill always comes across as something of a ponce in movies. Ramius should have relieved him then and there. Red October's officers a 'motley crew/crue'
On any view, the USS Dallas' Captain sitting at his chart table in 1990, in a movie set in 1985, but only having a copy to hand of Jane's Fighting Ships from 1977-78, is the most realistic aspect of the movie. That and an urgent defect requiring him to return to base.
Also, HFRO reminds me that all of Twitter should run on Zulu time.
Will pick this up later .... ivo the Neptune Massive
Sorry to be that HFRO guy ..... but why does a Tomcat approach the carrier for landing but then crash on deck as what looks like a Hornet??? No one noticed this at the time? Nyet?

Everyone in Sydney waiting, moronically, on press conferences in which we find out whether or not the city will be made into the Melbourne of winter 2020. The Media, salivating for a lockdown of a sprawling city of ~6m people, is barely concealed. Madness.
According to the @SkyNewsAust chryon, the usual 11am presser by Gladys has been pushed back to 12:30pm, which is never a good sign....
Sydney & New South Wales have been the engine room of Australia since early 2020 (plus India & China buying our commodities, which upsets the brokens here). No one has learned anything from Melbourne's economic Chernobyl & population exodus, clearly.

Have Portugal v France on in the background. No spoilers please. Two teams that I have deep respect for, ancestrally and culturally. Unlike the dreaded Boche that the Magyar Hussars should have put to the sword!
Portugal seemingly not learning that if you do not mark up on the French every second of every minute then the French have too much class up front.
Could someone with influence with @UEFAcom here ensure that we never again have games at conflicting times? It is absurd to have all these teams playing at / near the same times. I do not care if the players need rest. This is their factory. Clock on whenever you are rostered on

The same Canberra press gallery & 'friends of the ABC' who did not see Scott Morrison's reelection coming in May 2019 now doomsaying Coalition because of Barnaby Joyce. In #Realpolitik, only this map matters. Joyce sures up Coalition where needed. Smarter Labor people know this
Given the comically slow Vaccine roll out, had the ALP been led by Shorten (or anyone else) the slow vaccinations would have been hammered every day. Instead, Morrison was blessed with Albo, from the Sydney inner west, talking about electric cars, which mostly retail for ~$80K.
Australia is facing it umpteenth federal election in which most of the Australian Left (and its media apparatchiks) will campaign on making Australia into a more rugged version of Denmark. Tell me the first thing you notice here.

1/ Almost two years ago, I said this on @ABCthedrum re the cancerous effects of politicians becoming lobbyists and influence peddlers on our system of government ..... at the time, I got some pushback & a lot of 'but everyone does it' .....
2/ "Nearly a dozen former federal ministers from the most recent Coalition and Labor governments are either registered lobbyists or providing “strategic advice” to companies...."

theaustralian.com.au/nation/push-to…
3/ Errr, that horse has bolted & is now out to stud ....

“We do have to be careful of this revolving door in Australia. There needs to be very firm guidelines on what lobbying involves … a five-year ban would give enough length.”

The Kosciuszko brumbies are part of the Australian legend and anyone wanting to hurt these magnificent wild horses should be on a police register.
Good short history of the Brumby horse here

cerfhorses.org/brumby-horses/
This is good on the Brumbies as well. I cannot believe that there are not better solutions to the Brumby challenge than some mass cull for these equinphobic hippies upset they cannot grow weed or whatever in the Snowy Mountains

This will help many of the very online canon lawyers here trying to understand why Catholicism (born 33AD) is at odds with your Left/Right (born 1789)
Where church A (or synagogue or mosque) says that Politician X is not welcome in A for publicly repudiating A's most fundamental doctrines - this is A protecting itself from public scandal & sin. X continues to hold the office they hold, albeit X's soul may be in grave jeopardy.
Christianity since it was in private homes & the Catacombs has preached against abortion. The earliest Christians rescued & adopted babies abandoned by the pagan Roman culture. Nothing has changed here since the times of Saints Peter & Paul. The deposit of Faith must be guarded.
