A pandemic killed their jobs, they created new ones...
A thread on wine, women & wheels...
A hairdresser and a physical trainer walk into a bar…
Pause. In this joke, the only thing they walk out with is six figures.
AND a biz that broke even in 4 months.
Meet Julia & Melissa....
They got a set of Boston accents & boots to match.
One's biz wasn’t booming (ya know Covid), other couldn’t snip locks (same).
So they went all-in on their love of salad:
Ok, fruit salad
Ok, grapes
Ok, f-ing wine
W/ a mobile wine truck (um yes, can I get 1 plz)
Mobile & Wine Fast Stats:
- Americans spend $15 B+ on wine a year
- $1.1B on Mobile Food Trucks
- Growing at 10% CAGR
- Women buy most wine
Aka A LOT of cash, w/ wine & wheels growing by double digits each year.
The IDEA:
Melissa & Julia like wine
Other mom's like wine
People want to go outside after quarantine (aka being held prisoner)
People want to hang out
Parties were in the home, not in restaurants
So what did they do?
- Bought an old vintage trailer - $1500
- Volun-told husband to rehab 4 wino on wheels - $10k
- Sell packages from $650-$5k
And some wine & accessories etc, they put in about $30k.
Now so booked, they're turning people down.
All from going super local, hitting the PR hard as the hometown mama's.
- No 100k needed on social, paper works just fineeee
For a how-to guide:
- projection model
- permit list
- cost breakdown
1 Deal did 500% return in 3 years, and this early 1 also went to ZERO
A THREAD about a deal of mine and the dark side of investing in SMB business...
👇👇
Invested in a very small CPG company to take a large minority position.
- $50k invested
-$50k in debt
- $$$$$ in time & stress
This was a TON of $ for me.
(Dang that's still a lot of $, I hate losing $20 bucks)
My Pain in 60 Seconds:
- the company went to $0.
- lost all the $
- ended up ruining my friendship w/ the founder
- wasted a year trying to fix it
- now can’t even look at this type of food 🤢
When I started in finance, I had to google what a mutual fund was.
Not my 💡moment.
How bout I save you the embarrassment of doing what I did & asking if I had to "carry" something when they said I got carry... 🤦♀️

July 3, $600 = $1
Feb 2016 $1k = $1
Nov 9, $2k = $1
Nov 21, $3k
Feb 2018 lost 99.6%, 25k = $1
Today $248k = $1
In economics, things take longer than you think, then happen faster than you think.
Don't be left holding the last Bolivar. Asset up.
This was a tragedy.
Started by incompetent politicians
Finished by idealistic citizens
