Fannie Lou Hamer deserves R-E-S-P-E-C-T in many ways. Americans (including Mississippians who shamefully aren't usually taught about her in K-12) should know her story as well as they know Dr. King's.
Imagine being a Black woman in 1964 Mississippi (ruled by segregationists Dixiecrats) creating an alternative MS Freedom Democratic Party, traveling to the DNC & demanding that THEIR Black delegates be seated instead of white Dixiecrats.

THAT is anti-establishment. #GoodTrouble Fannie Lou Hamer raises a fist
I know the left and right these days have a lot of white dudes (usually from the midwest or northeast) that they call anti-establishment warriors.

But Fannie Lou Hamer WAS the anti-establishment. And she risked her life to fight an unjust establishment.
The fact that there isn't a blockbuster film or mini-series about the work of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, including Fannie Lou Hamer and her fellow warriors like Victoria Gray Adams (a Hattiesburg native) is a shame. snccdigital.org/people/victori…

Brent H's Twitter feed also shows that he believed Gov. @tatereeves' ending of the mask mandate was actually HELPING lower COVID rates and that it was now safe to go out in public unvaccinated and without a mask.

I'm sick to my stomach realizing that Brent H interacted with me on several occasions. But my message about the dangers of COVID and the need to get vaccinated didn't get through to him.

I wish I'd known how to get through to people like him when this pandemic hit. I still do. ImageImage

18 years since Lawrence v. Texas struck down state laws that made gay sex a crime.

8 years since US v. Windsor said the federal gov't must recognize same-sex marriages.

6 years since Obergefell v. Hodges said gay couples have a right to marry in all states. #Pride

THREAD: White guilt is so damn destructive.

I've often been accused of suffering with "white guilt" for speaking against racism.

I didn't get that criticism; I feel a duty to speak against racism—not guilt.

In reality, the "white guilt" accusations are pure deflection.
First of all, guilt simply means "a feeling of having done wrong OR failed in an obligation."

I didn't create the racist systems that I benefit from as a white man.

But once I became aware of how those systems privilege me, I would've been guilty if I'd stayed silent. screenshot: dictionary definition of guilt: "a feeling
Imagine being on the top academically at your school. You get all the awards, praise, privileges.

Then you find out your parents paid off the school to unfairly advantage you.

It's not your fault. You need not feel guilty—but you should feel an obligation to right the wrongs.

A woman says a man bullied her for years. He buys the record label that owns her masters.

To regain ownership of her work, she re-records her first 6 albums since age 16.

Variety names him "Music Mogul of the Year" & gives him space to be whine about her calling him a "bully."

Pretty sure Scooter Braun found the word "bully" and wrapped his noose around that.

You have to be really out of touch to think the average American cares more about "bipartisanship" than they do about getting results from the people they elected when it comes to things that improve their lives like infrastructure, health care access & protecting democracy, etc.
News coverage should emphasize what the people really care about instead of giving priority to what Joe Manchin or Mitch McConnell or Chuck Schumer say they care about.
People in this country have, frankly, often felt more screwed over by "bipartisanship" than helped by it.

The drug war? Bipartisan.

The 1994 crime bill and mass incarceration? Bipartisan.

Reefer madness? Promoted by Republicans and Democrats alike.
