As it is the 4th of July 🎆🇺🇸, I thought I'd put together a little table comparing the situation across the UK and USA right now!
Here is a closer look at cases.
The UK is obviously reporting far more right now, even without adjusting for population.
Scotland has reported more cases in the past week than New York, California, Illinois, and Texas combined.😬(they have a combined population of 100 million)
Deaths however tell a different story, where the USA is still reporting quite a bit more. Per capita, the USA is reporting about 3x as many deaths as the UK.
The four states mentioned previously have had 317 new deaths between them in the past week, in comparison to Scotlands 19
First dose vaccination wise, the UK as a whole is ahead of the USA, although some states (Vermont/Hawaii/Massachusetts) have good numbers too.
For second doses, the overall gap between the UK and USA is narrower, and some states are well ahead of the UK.
The above figures are for the vaccination coverage in the adult (18+) population only.
Anyone over the age of 12 is eligible to get vaccinated in the USA too, and have been for quite a while now.
So comparing total population coverage between the UK/USA isn't really equal
I've not followed things toooo closely over there, but it looks like they are struggling with vaccination uptake, especially in the more conservative states. Which is a shame.
In other states, the goal they seem to be aiming for is 70% of the adult population vaccinated
I have a friend in Oregon and he was saying that nearly all restrictions were lifted there last week once they reached the 70% mark.
Feels bad when in Scotland we're almost at the 90% mark and still need to wait another two weeks for that 😂😭
These are the restrictions still in Oregon. Basically masks are mandatory in airports/public transport/healthcare settings, and business can require them if they wish.
Non fully vaccinated people should still wear masks indoors.
I think it all sounds quite good and sensible
I do worry about the risk of a delta outbreak over there, with their lax restrictions and somewhat low vaccination coverage in some states.
But hopefully they'll be okay. They've had so many more cases than us overall, they could have a high level of natural immunity
And their vaccinations are more spread out, age wise. They wouldn't be going into a new wave with hardly anyone under the age of 40 fully vaccinated, like we did
The second chart there is the vaccination coverage in Scotland right now (I imagine the UK wide figures are similar)
I want them to be okay, as I want to visit my friends and family over there again soon!
Although the biggest barrier to that is that they've still got a travel ban in place for UK/EU arrivals. And with our situation, they probably wouldn't want to let us in anytime soon.. 😞
The layout on mobile isn't too good though. It is all a bit cramped! But if you're on a computer it'll work better, and you can type in multiple areas into the search bar to filter it
Vaccinated with the first dose, I should add!

First here are the cases, which are still rising throughout the UK.
They do appear to be peaking in Scotland, although the cases in Scotland have been rising for a lot longer, and are at a much higher rate than the rest of the UK.
So the UK wide peak may not be so close
At a local level cases are rising in all parts of the UK.
The North East of England are currently seeing the highest rates though, and have had quite the surge in the past week.
At a local authority level, Dundee City has the highest rates.
To help improve load times and usability, I've split the UK page up into three separate pages, and added some additional stuff to them!
The first is the 'national' page. This includes the UK wide data, 4 nation data, large UK regional data, and international comparisons.
On here I added in per capita figures into the English cases by day chart, and I also added a deaths version of the same chart.
Although I've only just started collecting the data for that, so it's just overall totals until later on today, when I can show the daily increase.
The second one is the 'local' page! This now has a time series of cases by day in each local authority (since I started collecting it in July at least), and a quick search box to see some data about a specific local authority
