Reporters Without Borders new “Press freedom predators” gallery includes an EU leader for the first time: Hungary PM Viktor Orbán.

Congrats to him & to EU leaders who did nothing as a dictatorship emerged in the EU!

(especially @EPP, which backed him)
rsf.org/en/news/rsfs-2… Image
Wouldn't it be nice if @EPP leaders like Merkel, @vonderleyen, @ManfredWeber, @donaldtuskEPP, @JunckerEU apologised for their personal roles in letting the EU stop being a bloc of exclusively democratic states?
hrw.org/news/2020/04/2… Image
And then, you know, pledge to do everything in their power - institutionally & politically - to undo the mess the made?

And then act on it?
Yes, that would be a fine thing.

Successive US administrations have largely perceived human rights more as an obstacle than as an essential component of addressing #Afghanistan’s problems.

This approach has been catastrophic... Image
As US forces withdraw from #Afghanistan, many in the US national security establishment are rehashing old debates about the conflict & what could have led to “victory” – more troops, looser rules of engagement, etc.

It's all very familiar to what happened after the Vietnam War.
But all of these arguments, "grievously devalue the devastating consequences of the war for Afghans — civilians and fighters alike", as my colleague, @pagossman writes...

Turkish & Kyrgyz authorities abducted, forcibly disappeared & extrajudicially transferred #OrhanInandi, a dual Turkish-Kyrgyz national living in Bishkek, to #Turkey.

Egregious violations of international & domestic law.

“Abducting, forcibly disappearing, and unlawfully transporting #OrhanInandi to #Turkey from Kyrgyzstan demonstrates again Ankara’s ruthless disregard for the rule of law in general and most basic norms of international law.” - @HughAWilliamson
That a dual Turkish-Kyrgyz national, could be abducted & missing for weeks on #Kyrgyz soil only to be illegally removed from the country by Turkey’s intel services, "suggests the Kyrgyz government is either unwilling or unable to stand up to Ankara or directly colluded with them"

In blocking wider vaccine production globally, the EU takes a neocolonialist approach to the pandemic, saying:

❗️ we're in charge;

❗️ we decide who lives & dies;

❗️ we may give you some charity later if we feel generous & if you behave.

It’s arrogant & self-destructive. Image
From the beginning, the EU has been blocking & delaying wider vaccine production globally by obstructing the #TRIPSwaiver, a proposal to temporarily waive some intellectual property (IP) rules on vaccines & other health products.

Hundreds of families in the #Czech Republic whose houses have been damaged or destroyed by the tornado are eligible for financial help…

BUT that money could be confiscated by bailiffs.

The country has a serious problem with bailiffs & private debt collectors... Image
In 2001, the Czech state created a system of private bailiffs who have been earning large amounts of money from indebted citizens.

The scam works like this...
Indebtedness usually starts from a small debt of that's the equivalent of a few euros.

Creditors would not inform the debtor about the debt, but they would pass it to a private debt collector.

The private debt collectors would then wait several years before they pounced.

➡️ We are not vaccinating people fast enough globally. Image
Governments are again arguing over scarce vaccines: who should get the doses - children here or older people there?

But we could tackle vaccine scarcity itself.

The world could make more vaccines faster.

Outrageously, the EU & a few other rich governments are blocking it. Image

Auschwitz personnel, 1944.

Ordinary people, not monsters, make atrocities happen. ImageImageImage
The endless stream of books and films that present those who supported and took part in atrocities as one-dimensional beasts, as simply monsters, sheds no light on how atrocities emerge. It offers no insight on how to prevent future atrocities.
Nazi horror didn’t start with genocide.

It started with words...

...with the dehumanizing of minority groups...

...and the mainstream acceptance of that dehumanization.
