Tatiana Kouzina, a prominent #Belarus researcher & policy analyst, detained in Minsk.

She will be held in pretrial custody for two months.

The charge?

Authorities won’t say…

hrw.org/news/2021/07/0…
Kouzina’s lawyer may know the charges against her, but he cannot disclose them because he was required to sign a nondisclosure agreement.

This absurdity is typical in politically motivated criminal cases in #Belarus.
#Belarus courts hold hearings behind closed doors and force lawyers to sign nondisclosure agreements, prohibiting them from commenting on all matters related to the case, including the actual charges.
Since mass peaceful protests began in #Belarus last summer, authorities have jailed hundreds on politically motivated charges, with blatant disregard for their rights to liberty, to legal counsel, and to a fair trial.
#Belarus lawyers also reported that authorities prevented them from speaking to their clients confidentially and filmed their meetings with clients, sharing the footage with state-sponsored media outlets.
Lawyers for clients facing politically motivated charges are subject to harassment and intimidation by the #Belarus authorities. They are also targeted with criminal charges and biased “inspections”.
At least 17 lawyers have been disbarred since October, in retaliation for speaking out against human rights abuses in #Belarus, joining collective letters and petitions, and refusing to sign broad and vague nondisclosure agreements.
Like hundreds of other critics arrested before her, Kouzina is now at the mercy of the abusive #Belarus state, with no hope for legal recourse or justice.

This needs to stop.

The vast majority of people haven't even had one shot yet, and at current jab rates, most won't for years…

And the more booster shots rich countries need, the more years it's likely to be…

All because rich governments impose global vaccine scarcity.
abcnews.go.com/Health/booster…
The need for 3rd-shot boosters is one reason why calls for rich governments to donate spare doses will achieve limited results.

Yes, such donations would be good, but govts will likely want to avoid being attacked for not prioritising those at home.
wired.co.uk/article/covid-…
The other reason why donating spare doses would achieve limited results is the scale of global need.

A few governments have talked about donating tens of millions of doses; one or two have said maybe hundreds of millions.

💥 But we need 11 billion doses at least.

Should we start naming corona variants after political leaders who are blocking wider vaccine production, thus prolonging the pandemic & making the emergence of new variants more likely?

- The "Merkel variant"?

- The "von der Leyen variant"?

- The "Johnson variant"?
The EU, UK & a few other rich governments have been blocking & delaying wider vaccine production globally by obstructing the #TRIPSwaiver, a proposal to temporarily waive some intellectual property (IP) rules on vaccines & other health products.

These leaders are literally prolonging the global pandemic. And they know full well that’s what they are doing by prioritising pharma companies' profits over human lives.

They should get credit for it, no?

Successive US administrations have largely perceived human rights more as an obstacle than as an essential component of addressing #Afghanistan’s problems.

This approach has been catastrophic...
As US forces withdraw from #Afghanistan, many in the US national security establishment are rehashing old debates about the conflict & what could have led to “victory” – more troops, looser rules of engagement, etc.

It's all very familiar to what happened after the Vietnam War.
But all of these arguments, "grievously devalue the devastating consequences of the war for Afghans — civilians and fighters alike", as my colleague, @pagossman writes...

Turkish & Kyrgyz authorities abducted, forcibly disappeared & extrajudicially transferred #OrhanInandi, a dual Turkish-Kyrgyz national living in Bishkek, to #Turkey.

Egregious violations of international & domestic law.

“Abducting, forcibly disappearing, and unlawfully transporting #OrhanInandi to #Turkey from Kyrgyzstan demonstrates again Ankara’s ruthless disregard for the rule of law in general and most basic norms of international law.” - @HughAWilliamson
That a dual Turkish-Kyrgyz national, could be abducted & missing for weeks on #Kyrgyz soil only to be illegally removed from the country by Turkey’s intel services, "suggests the Kyrgyz government is either unwilling or unable to stand up to Ankara or directly colluded with them"

In blocking wider vaccine production globally, the EU takes a neocolonialist approach to the pandemic, saying:

❗️ we're in charge;

❗️ we decide who lives & dies;

❗️ we may give you some charity later if we feel generous & if you behave.

It’s arrogant & self-destructive. Image

The EU's policy goes against all expert advice and the majority of governments in the world.

EU leaders arrogantly think they know better... Image

Hundreds of families in the #Czech Republic whose houses have been damaged or destroyed by the tornado are eligible for financial help…

BUT that money could be confiscated by bailiffs.

The country has a serious problem with bailiffs & private debt collectors... Image
In 2001, the Czech state created a system of private bailiffs who have been earning large amounts of money from indebted citizens.

The scam works like this...
Indebtedness usually starts from a small debt of that's the equivalent of a few euros.

Creditors would not inform the debtor about the debt, but they would pass it to a private debt collector.

The private debt collectors would then wait several years before they pounced.
