Today in response to #UNSC #Syria vote, @hrw UN Director @loucharbon said, “Russia has successfully blackmailed the international community into only allowing a single crossing for UN cross-border aid into Syria."
.@amnesty UN head @SherineT said, "Authorizing just the single crossing at Bab al-Hawa once again for one or possibly two six-month periods is essential but minimal and remains woefully insufficient to meet the overwhelming humanitarian needs of the civilian population."
I asked a senior Administration official about those statements, and the official said, "The groups that we've been in touch with have a different impression from the ones that you just quoted. We see we see 6 month extension with virtually automatic additional 6 months--
adding up to a full year extension of humanitarian access--as being far better than what was expected in recent months, and we consider this to be a significant progress on the humanitarian issues."
