We ALL have a problem.

We overestimate what can be done in a day, yet underestimate what can be accomplished in a week, month, or year.

THREAD: 10 Steps to get from where you are to where you want to be.
1/ Intentions

The difference between those who accomplish great things and those who don't?

Simple.

The difference is in the "doing."

Everyone starts out with the best of intentions, few follow through.

Be one of the few.
2/ Identity

Who do you see yourself as?

You, and only you, define who you are.

Build daily habits to reinforce your identity.

•Writers - Write
•Builders - Build
•Teachers - Teach

What you do is what you become.
3/ Envy

I love Twitter.

That said, it can be defeating at times.

Seeing the success of others can be encouraging & motivational.

It can also leave you feeling envious & wondering "what have I done?"

Don't get caught in the comparison trap.

Control what you can control.
4/ Systems > Goals

Goals are meant to be completed.

Systems are meant to be built and sustained over the long term.

Focus on building systems rather than setting goals.

Goal = Lose weight
System = Maintain a healthy diet
5/ Consistency

Show up every day.

Being present and putting in the work is 90% of the battle.

Small habits, done consistently over time, lead to large-scale change.

"First say to yourself what you would be, and then do what you have to do."

- Epictetus
6/ Set higher standards

Don't hold yourself back.

The single biggest limiting factor for most people is their own self-doubt.

Start with your loftiest idea and reverse engineer the path to get there.

The road may be shorter thank you think.
7/ Celebrate Others

To paraphrase a quote from JFK:

"No one is ever made better by pulling another person down."

"Every person is made better whenever any one person is made better."

Find joy in supporting others.

Who you help today may be who helps you tomorrow.
8/ Yes & No

What does saying "yes" or "no" really mean?

No is a decision.

Yes is a commitment.

By saying no, you leave your options open and in turn, are saying yes to future possibilities.

Learn to say no more often.
9/ Comparison

Theodore Roosevelt famously said, "Comparison is the thief of joy."

He was right.

When assessing progress, compare not to others, but instead to your previous self.

Take pride in what you've done.

Where you are now, is where you wanted to be a short time ago.
10/ Never stop learning

2 of my favorite quotes:

"Wisdom is not a product of schooling, but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it." - Albert Einstein

"Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at 20 or 80. Anyone who keeps learning stays young." - Henry Ford

Put on your thinking cap.

Better yet, put on 6.

THREAD: De Bono's 6 Thinking Hats

How you can become a world-class problem solver today.👇🏻
1/ We all have problems.

Work, family, friends, you name it. Disagreements happen, decisions need to be made.

Yet often, ego gets in the way.

We become more focused on winning an argument, rather than finding the best solution.

But it's not our fault.
2/ The human brain thinks in a number of distinct ways.

Different personalities can look at the same problem through a multitude of lenses.

So how do you consider all perspectives, while keeping your focus on solving the issue at hand?

Let's talk about hats...

It's 1937, and Vernon Rudolph is broke.

He's got $25 to his name, an old Pontiac, and a secret recipe from a French Pastry Chef...

84 years later, the company he founded is valued at $2.62 Billion.

THREAD: The rise, fall, and resurgence of Krispy Kreme.
1/ Our story begins in 1933 when Rudolph, while on a trip to New Orleans, had a chance encounter with a French Chef named Joe LeBeau.

LeBeau had a secret.

A yeast-raised doughnut recipe that would become legendary, although neither man knew it at the time.
2/ Rudolph, only 18 years old, was an enterprising young man.

He purchased the recipe along with the rights to the Krispy Kreme name & returned home to Paducah, KY.

There, Rudolph was an employee in his Uncle's dry goods store, where doughnuts were one of many items they sold.

What do the world's greatest leaders know about the power of persuasion that you don't?

THREAD: How you can unlock the ability to change anyone's mind.

Let's get smarter... 👇🏻
1/ As far back as the mid 300's BC, humans were fascinated by the power of persuasion.

In light of this, Aristotle developed what is known as the "Rhetorical Triangle."

A framework for persuading any audience using 3 simple appeals:

•Ethos
•Pathos
•Logos

Let's dig in...
2/ Ethos (Ethics / Character)

The first of the 3 appeals, Ethos speaks to the perceived character of the speaker.

In order to persuade anyone to do anything, they must first believe you are a credible and trustworthy source.

How do you accomplish this?

Humans have a tendency to believe false information.

Especially upon repeated exposure.

It's called the "Illusory Truth Effect"

THREAD:
Why it happens and how you can train your brain to overcome it.

Let's get smarter 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻
1/ First, some background...

In 1977, researchers from Villanova and Temple were the first to coin the term.

Over a five-week period, separated into 3 sessions, participants were given a list of 60 statements.

Their task?

Determine what was true & what was false.

How?
2/ In each session, 40 statements were unique, while the remaining 20 were repeated from the previous rounds.

Over the course of the three meetings, researchers noticed an interesting trend...

Dos Equis grew by 35% when they introduced us to "The Most Interesting Man In The World"

5 key lessons on how to grow your audience:

From the man "whose blood smells like cologne." 🧵
1/ "He can speak Russian... In French"

Speak your audience's language.

•What do they want to learn?
•How will you deliver if they follow?
•How can you help them move from "A" (where they are now) to "B" (where they want to go)

Clearly communicate the value you provide.
2/ "He's won the lifetime achievement award... twice"

Impossible right? Maybe not...

Grow your following by making the impossible seem possible.

Take complex topics & break them down into simple, actionable instructions.

Show people how to do what they don't think they can.

In the last 3 months, I've grown my Twitter following from ~30 to almost 5,000.

I don't own a business.

I'm not a growth marketer.

I don't always get things right.

I'm an average guy, trying to write interesting stories, & grow an audience.

THREAD: What I've learned so far👇🏻
1/ It's not easy.

Everyone's heard the stories of massive followings being built overnight.

Unless you're already well-known or happen to strike gold with an insanely viral post, it's going to take time.

Time and consistency. Show up, provide value, the followers will come.
2/ Be transparent.

Authenticity works. Be willing to share not only your successes but your failures as well.

Believe it or not, everyone is winging it.

Sharing failure helps you learn and you'll be surprised at the amount of encouraging feedback you receive.
