Trying to understand the governments poor response to fire safety has been difficult, why make such a mess of it?
I think there are a variety of reasons
This article suggests donations are a part of it but I also think perhaps even more importantly are
1/
theguardian.com/society/2021/j…
conversations that go on behind the scenes from the people that donate money to Ministers etc
It was not the £12k cost of a table that helped decide Robert Jenrick to approve the Westferry Printworks but the conversations that happened at the dinner table between the minister,
2/
Richard Desmond & his snr mgmt team
We still do not know what was said but I suspect it was a bunch of reasons why Jenrick should encourage more housebuilding + difficulties developers operate under, Minister can you help us, not Minister here is £££ can you fix it for us
The
3/
result though are skewed decisions, Ministers hear too much from developers (who we need to build more homes) & not enough from residents of their buildings
Another example is look at Conservative Home, almost no articles about cladding etc issues
conservativehome.com/?s=cladding
4/
Except from two Conservatives that understand the issues well
I think very few other Conservative MP’s really understand the issues (most affected buildings in Labour areas does not help)
5/
conservativehome.com/platform/2021/…
My own attempt to get an article into Conservative Home on the subject failed
cllrandrewwood.com/news/the-polit…
6/
So the Conservativs are making mistakes not just because financially incentivised to do so but because of imperfect information, and too much of what they do know comes from developers
This is where media have been so helpful
thetimes.co.uk/article/desper…
Civil service?
7/
So some of the focus has to be on educating Ministers (but this requires Ministers willing to learn & listen!)
or we need another fatal fire (unfortunately) to drive change
But there are lessons to learn from the NPW fire if only somebody would document & package those lessons

Last year Tower Hamlets Councillors cost you taxpayers £904,552
Are we value for money?
Which Cllr’s work hard on your behalf?
Some analysis
The following is not a 100% accurate record but is indicative of who works & who does not
But you also need to consider other factors
1/ ImageImage
1st how many Members Enquiries have they submitted in the last 3 years?
Marc Francis 1,658 & Rabina Khan 1,492 top the list by some margin
Two Deputy Mayors come 2nd Sirajul Islam 895, Rachel Blake 653 (some lucky people in Bow East)
I am 8th out of 45 on 402
Top 15 below
2/ Image
Bottom 15 - reminder these are over 3 years i.e. 6 in 3 years!
Some may claim they do by email to officers but we are not supposed to do that except in an emergency & how do they know which officers deal with issues?
Note Harun Miah & Rajib Ahmed elected Feb 2019

What does this mean for Tower Hamlets?
George Galloway now free to stand if any future Poplar & Limehouse by-election
Bethnal Green & Bow GE 2005 he got 36% wins
Poplar & Limehouse GE 2010 17% loses
Bradford West 2012 by-election 56% wins
He got 22% yesterday in Batley & Spen
1/
We won't know for months whether or not there will be a by-election here but he may fancy his chances here
But what if next year we have the following elections:
Lutfur Rahman running for Mayor
George Galloway running for MP
What if they work together?
Looking at Batley & Spen
2/
that may not be a pleasant experience
The result may depend on the quality of Labour candidates
Kim Leadbetter 2021 & Jim Fitzpatrick 2010 could beat Galloway
John Biggs failed against Lutfur in 2014 but is now better known but in my view not guaranteed to beat Lutfur in 2022

What a waste of time & money by Tower Hamlets Council at the request of the 'Local Campaigns Forum of the Labour Party'
Looks like Canary Wharf ward will stay as Canary Wharf ward
Bethnal Green as Bethnal Green ward
St Peters as St Peters
This follows
1/
democracy.towerhamlets.gov.uk/ieListDocument…
the Local Campaigns Forum (who are they?) requesting a review of ward names
The Council undertook consultation on changing the names of 3 wards:
Bethnal Green to Bethnal Green East opposed by 70% of the residents of the ward who responded to the consultation v 26% want change
2/
St Peters Ward to be changed to Bethnal Green West was narrower but 52% of residents in the ward wanted to keep name v 46% who wanted to change the name

E-Scooter rental trial update on rules + what does Tower Hamlets Ride Through mean & how to provide feedback
a. You can rent from and leave an e-scooter in the Canary Wharf estate area
b. You can also rent from and leave an e-scooter in the following TfL locations outside

1/
their stations on their own land

c. Tower Hamlets Council did not want to be part of the trial of e-scooters which is why the rest of the Borough is ride through only, so you should not be able to rent an e-scooter elsewhere & if one left elsewhere the operator needs to go &

2/
pick it up but you can travel through other parts of TH on e-scooter
More here
tfl.gov.uk/.../driving/el…
You can provide feedback & comments here on the trial, issues, problems and concerns here i.e. is the Blackwall DLR bay in the right location?

ASDA planning application update & a prediction
I predict that tonight the Strategic Development Committee will reject the ASDA scheme
But new Chair & new members make it hard to predict
But we will probably lose on appeal
So a lot of effort has gone into making sure that any
1/
rejection is sustainable at appeal but this will be a test
This will be hard as last January most Councillors voted for Policies that encouraged more development of this site
+ we are missing our housing targets

2/
But with a record number of speakers against? (5 Cllrs & 2? residents)
I decided not to speak as normally only 4 people maybe 5 are allowed to speak so I wanted Labour Cllrs & residents to speak against as more likely to have an impact than me
Last time we had this much Labour

Freshwater on the Isle of Dogs & ASDA & the failure for a generation to plan ahead properly
For the ASDA scheme, Thames Water have said 3 times now on the 10th Feb 2020, 17th June 2020 & 12th Feb 2021 that there is not enough water
Councils Committee report does not mention
1/
On 19th May 2014 & 10th July 2014 Thames Water sent similar emails about issues with South Quay Plaza & Meridian Gate (aka The Madison) both on Marsh Wall close to ASDA both partially occupied by residents
"existing water supply infrastructure has insufficient capacity"
2/
South Quay Plaza nothing happened no condition was added
Meridian Place a condition was added but I cannot find any evidence of it being enforced
So for years Thames Water have said there are issues about whether their network has enough water for future developments
