This blog post provides a bit more background on what the QR code is, and how it works. I'm going to pull out a few specifics in this thread, and add a few other details I think are worth calling attention to:
1/ The QR code in the Digital Vaccine Record is a SMART Health Card, an open-source framework developed by @SMARTHealthIT and embraced by VCI.org; more details at smarthealth.cards.
@SMARTHealthIT@vishnuravi 3/ if you point your iPhone at the QR code, you'll see "no usable data" on your camera. (Android users will see a long string of text, starting w/a "shc:/" prefix.) This isn't a bug: the long string of text is what’s known as a "FHIR bundle".
@SMARTHealthIT@vishnuravi 4/ FHIR stands for Fast Health Interoperability Resources, and is an emerging collection of standards designed to improve the interoperability of healthcare data. More information is at fhir.org.
5/ The bundle is then cryptographically signed by the State of California; any SHC-compatible reader can validate that signature by using the state’s public key, published on the My Vaccine Record site at myvaccinerecord.cdph.ca.gov/creds/.well-kn….
6/ When the QR code is scanned by a SHC-compatible reader, the reader can verify the signature, which confirms the authenticity of underlying information. (If the FHIR bundle had been modified, the signature verification would fail, resulting in an unsuccessful scan.)
7/ Speaking of SHC-compatible readers, two big developments on that front in the last week:
8/ A final note on the DVR system design: we match contact info entered on the portal w/info already on file with the California Immunization Registry. If your contact information is missing from the immunization registry, we cannot match your info, and can't send a link. ...
... since launch, we've worked closely with a number of vaccination providers, and even more contact information has been added to the underlying immunization registry for several million California residents.
If you can’t retrieve your record, contact your provider and ask them to send updated contact information to the state’s immunization registry. You can also use the California Department of Public Health’s Virtual Assistant to get your record updated. chat.myturn.ca.gov/?id=17
More to come! Have a few fun enhancements coming soon - in the meantime, keep your feedback coming. /end

Launch day! I forgot how fun (and yes, stressful) these can be. 🧵
1/ Today, California became the first state in the country to launch an open source, standards-based digital vaccination record. Using the SMART Health Card framework, any resident who wants a digital copy of their vaccination record can get one at myvaccinerecord.cdph.ca.gov.
2/ This is entirely voluntary - anyone who's been vaccinated in California who wants a digital copy of their CDC card, this is for you. Don't want a digital copy? Totally cool! You still got vaccinated, which helped California re-open this week. Thank you. 🙏🏻
1/ While I'm under no illusions that Trump's transition to Joe Biden will be graceful, I'm inspired by each of the prior transitions that preceded 45's hand-off to 46.
Take a step back for a moment and admire the precision, the discipline, the confidence of the Biden team.
Not over till the votes are counted of course. But @jomalleydillon and her operation sure seem like a well-run ship right now, and that's giving me hope.
Lots to admire:
- Biden's crisp, calm, brief speech last night
- no leaks from 'campaign officials' to on-air pundits throughout the evening
- forceful briefing this morning declaring what will happen over next 72 hours
- unequivocal rejection of Trump's lies
Overall message couldn't be clearer or more consistent:
1) count every vote (including those who didn't vote for us, it's OK) 2) let the process work 3) we've got this
In other words. Trust. Trust the system, trust the voters, trust us.
