Setting a goal β solving the problem. Switching βοΈ for π is still the biggest way each of us can cut carbon.

π Some more goodies on EVs, inc a delivery plan, new smart charging policy & electrification of government's own vehicle fleet (40,000 π & π) by 2027.
We also need more support for πΆπ΄ππ but have to wait for details on this, as well as the billions being wasted on π£οΈ

More to come later as more detail comes out. Quick shout out to the brilliant people working so hard on cleaning up transport inside and outside government πππ

β Walks the talk with his own EV
β Recognises need to solve congestion and boost πΆπ΄ππ
β Focus on H2 for planes, not waste fuels
β The "not blue but greenprint" thing is a bit cringe though!

You can hear from the real experts on decarbonising transport in this @GreenAllianceUK event tomorrow morning, featuring
While we wait for the Transport Decarb Plan to come out, join me on a Eurostar π across the Channel to Brussels, where the πͺπΊ #Fitfor55 package has just been published ec.europa.eu/commission/preβ¦
π This is THE big one today. The πͺπΊ Commission has held firm and put forward 100% vehicle sales to be zero emission by 2035. A huge positive signal ahead of #COP26 π
For ages the EU had the policy but not the ambition, and the UK vice versa. As of today, both have both!

π More goodies. The regs apply to π AND π plus interim goals for over half of new vehicles to be zero emission by 2030.
β οΈ for the extension of the Emissions Trading System to transport (and buildings). Will need very careful handling to make sure it doesn't load unfair costs onto hard-pressed families.
Right so by my count there are SEVENTY-EIGHT commitments in the Plan. I'm sure there will be much to criticise in the details, but one thing's for sure, civil servants in @transportgovuk have not been idle! π€βπͺ

@transportgovuk The green paper on regulations "sets out the options which include developing the fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions regulations already in place, or using ZEV sales targets alongside CO2 regulation."
Important to set a strong market signal to reduce costs and boost jobs.
19/n
@transportgovuk π This looks like a hidden bonus (angel π in the detail?). The diesel truck π phase-out could be written into regulation at the same time as the car π and van π phase-out π
"The Green Paper... will establish a regulatory framework to deliver these phase out dates..."

@transportgovuk The structure of the TDP doc differs quite a bit from the emphasis of the TDP comms.
The comms mainly focused on π & βοΈ - keep driving, keep flying.
The doc makes clear that switching π to πΆπ΄ππ is the TDP's first priority. And that zero emission βοΈ don't exist yet.

Last one today. Will pick up tomorrow.
Weird to see @sainsburys quoted at the top of the DfT PR. Yes they've paid to be a @COP26 sponsor, but they haven't joined #EV100 (unlike @Tesco) and have been very slow on rolling out EV charging points... express.co.uk/news/nature/14β¦

Looking forward to the questions for @redditchrachel. Some say the TDP CO2 pathway is ambitious, requiring traffic reduction as well as EVs. Others say it falls short of @theCCCuk pathway. Keen to get to the bottom of this...

Encouraged to hear the Minister tout the UK's potential for π’ hydrogen for βοΈ and π’ based on our outstanding offshore wind resource and industry.
β«οΈ However, the goal of ONE transatlantic zero emission flight within a generation is pitiful. Must go much faster!

Lively debate in the #GAevent. Overall the green sector seems pretty happy with the action on π & π, encouraged by tentative steps to boost πΆπ΄ππ and reform planning and taxation, welcoming the ambition on βοΈ but deeply sceptical of π¦ thinking, and π’ seem to be mia.

Back in the weeds of yesterday's DfT docs dump. Really enjoyed this juxtaposition from pages 123 and 204 of the Transport Decarb Plan main document ππ (paging @The_AEF)

@The_AEF Into the ZEV Mandate consultation doc and I just love this charmingly euphemistic wording. Those clever cars π€π getting great test results without actually getting better. What's that called again? Oh yeah, CHEATING π #dieselgate
Some background on the 2030 petrol/diesel vehicle sales ban...
1οΈβ£ Does business back this policy? Resoundingly yes. 29 companies, including 5 of the UK's 6 biggest fleets, have been calling for this all year theclimategroup.org/our-work/pressβ¦
2οΈβ£ Who will drive this transition? Again, it's business. 60% of new cars and almost all new vans/trucks are bought by companies. Our #EV100 members, switching 700,000 vehicles on UK roads to EV by 2030, are the sharp end of the wedge. We then get these EVs cheaper second hand.
3οΈβ£ What about charging? Again (spot the theme yet?) it's business. Our #EV100 members are rolling out charging for staff and customers - crucial for people who can't charge at home - at 1200 UK locations by 2030. @Tesco is a cracking example theclimategroup.org/our-work/pressβ¦
