First let me answer your question, “What the hell is Positive Psychology?”

This relatively new branch of psychology is centered on helping people become happier.

Positive Psychology focuses on how to help humans prosper & lead healthy, happy lives.
“Positive psychology takes you through the countryside of pleasure and gratification, up into the high country of strength and virtue, and finally to the peaks of lasting fulfillment, meaning and purpose.”

~ Martin Seligman
In order to better explain and define well-being,

Seligman created the PERMA model.

PERMA is an acronym for the following five elements of well-being:

- Positive Emotions
- Engagement
- Relationships
- Meaning
- Accomplishments

Let’s dive deeper into these.
1. Positive emotion is much more than mere ‘happiness.’

Positive emotions include hope, joy, love, compassion, amusement, and gratitude.

Increasing positive emotions helps build physical, intellectual, and social resources that lead to overall wellbeing.
Here are some ways to build positive emotions:

• Practicing gratitude.
• Doing things you love.
• Spending time with your loved ones.

Positive emotions can undo the harmful effects of negative emotions and promote resilience.
2. Engagement

According to Seligman, engagement is “being one with the music.”

It is in line with concept of “flow.”

Flow includes complete absorption in an activity.

In other words, it is living in the present moment and focusing entirely on the task at hand.
Here are some ways to increase engagement:

• Practice living in the moment
• Do things you excel at
• Spend time in nature & observe things

Research on engagement has shown that people who use their strengths in new ways each day for a week were happier and less depressed.
3. Positive Relationships

Relationships in this model refer to feeling supported, loved, and valued by others.

The social environment has been found to play a critical role in preventing depression

Many people have a goal of improving relationships with their loved ones.
Some ways to build better relationships:

• Join a class/group.
• Create friendships with people you get acquainted with.
• Ask questions about them.
• Share good news or celebrate success.

Strong social networks also contribute to better physical health among older adults.
4. Meaning

Another intrinsic human quality is the search for meaning & the need to have a sense of value & worth.

Having a purpose in life helps people focus on what is really important.

People who report having purpose in life, live longer & have greater life satisfaction.
Having meaning or purpose in life is different for everyone.

Meaning may be pursued through a profession, a cause or a belief.

Find your purpose using these ways:

• Participate in a cause/organisation that matters to you.
• Try new things.
• Use your passion to help others.
5. Accomplishments

A sense of accomplishment refers to successfully achieving the goals that an individual sets for itself.

This contributes to wellbeing because individuals can look at their lives with a sense of pride.
Ways to get accomplishments:

• Set achievable yet ambitious goals.
• Keep in mind previous victories.
• Celebrate your victories.

Achieving intrinsic goals (such as growth and connection) leads to larger gains in wellbeing than external goals such as money or fame.
There are some other plus{+} points for this model. These are:

• Sleep
• Nutrition
• Optimism
• Physical Activity

Aim to maximise all these too for a happy life.

Also start writing a gratitude journal. Highly helpful.
Psychology is the study of human brain.

Our mind has several hundred thoughts at any given time.

Use Mental Models to organise those thoughts & think better.
