A summary of flights, accommodation and things-to-do in Arusha, Safari.
I can’t respond to all DMs so I will just thread it here.
PS: I don’t know everything, I just know what I know 😅
FLIGHTS
Cape Town - Kilimanjaro (JRO) = ~R7000 return.
It cost us more because we had to shift our flights from Joburg to Cape Town and to 10 days earlier so we could be out of SA when the President announced the readjusted Covid regulations.
Needed to escape the lockdown🙈
COVID TESTS
R850 for PCR and must be presented at destination within 72 hours.
And when you arrive in Tanzania, you have to take a mandatory rapid test for US$25. The process is painfully long. It took up to 2 hours.
TZ went from 0 to 2 -ve Covid certificates 🥴
TRANSIT THROUGH ETHIOPIA
Using Ethiopian Airways, you transit through Addis Ababa. If your layover is over 8 hours, you are given a complimentary hotel room, including meals and airport shuttle in Addis.
Pray for a good hotel. Someone told me that they got the worst hotel ever.
ARRIVAL IN TANZANIA
We did Cape Town- Addis Ababa- Zanzibar- Kilimanjaro (JRO).
You have to have a yellow fever certificate + -ve PCR test + -ve Rapid Test.
You get visa on arrival for SA and Zim passports.
AIRPORT TO ARUSHA
Taxi/Cab = US$50.
I’m sure it can go lower but after days of travelling + 2 hours of queuing I wasn’t in the mood for negotiating.
Arusha - because it has a vibrant nightlife and it’s closer to the Safaris.
ACCOMMODATION
Hotels in Arusha range from US$10 to +$400 per night. There’s something for every budget.
[I filter by cleanliness and I read reviews]
The cheap accommodation is usually backpackers/hostels.
Most have private rooms so it’s still good.
ARUSHA
[This country makes one start thinking Zimbabwean prices are not that bad.]
Mt Meru waterfalls + Lake Duluti day trip = $45 per person.
Coffee Tour = $35 per person.
Hot springs + another waterfall = $85 per person
These are prices after intense negotiating.
ARUSHA Cont…
There are many markets in Arusha, from food to clothing to souvenirs. You have to bargain hard because the price they tell you upfront is ridiculous. You should divide it by 4 at least, then still go lower.
Many ‘Things-To-Do in Arusha’ are outside Arusha.
WIDE WILD WEST
The major tourist attractions are: Wildlife,Ngorongoro Crater, waterfalls, rivers, lakes, vast Savanna plains, volcanic aftermaths, Mountains (Mt Kilimanjaro, Mt Meru and the Mountain of God), Wildebeest Migration.
It’s perfect for Nature enthusiasts.
SAFARI
Most Safaris are over night, so the shortest you can do is 2 days, 1 night. You can do up to +7 days
It’s quite similar to SA, Bots, Zim, Nam game drives except you see a whole lot of animals and usually in large groups.
And you’re almost guaranteed to see the big 5.
We decided on 1 day - 1 park (4)
Serengeti (Bucket list)
Tarangire
Manyara (Flamingos galore)
Ngorongoro Crater
Costs: ~US$200 per person per day. You have to activate your negotiating skills. We landed at $185 pppd
Tipping is advisable but not mandatory.
A friend of ours from New York did 6 days and paid a whopping US$1800… that’s $300 per day! But he got the lodge while we got tents so I guess it was worth it for him.
If I had to pick 2, I would choose the Serengeti for the Wildebeest Migration and Ngorongoro Crater because it’s amazing. It’s a whole different world on its own, complete with its own climate.
Both are on the 7 Natural Wonders of Africa list and deservingly so.
The Safari cars take up to 7 people. So expect to be with strangers-turn-friends. It could be just you or full, depending on people booking.
Cost includes accommodation, meals and return transport to hotel. The fancier the accommodation, the higher the price.
We opted for tents because we are used to roughing it up anyway. We had our sleeping bags & inflatable mattresses because sharing (bedding) is not always caring.
And it’s cheaper 🤭
Expect shared bathrooms.
I didn’t enjoy the packed lunches. I’m a bit picky with my food 😬
In hindsight, 4 days is too long especially is you’re used to Game. Others felt they needed at least 7 days to truly enjoy ‘Africa’ and see the Wild.
I’m Africa and I’m Wild so I didn’t relate 🤣
To each his own.
It’s an experience to remember though.
They said it’s expensive because Park fees are very high. They said the TZ gvt increased Safari prices to limit the number of people going into the parks, in an attempt to conserve animals and avoid overcrowding.
We pay $5 entry fee in Zimbabwe and $25 for a game drive, so no matter the justification, I won’t understand 😅
Many people combine the Safari with Zanzibar or with hiking up Kilimanjaro. I guess it’s a “Since I’m already here, I might as well do it” decision.
So would I recommend Safari in TZ? Definitely!
But maybe do less days. By day 4 I’m sure you’ll be tired of seeing zebras.
Thank you for coming to my TedTalk 🥰

I found this particularly interesting. Mostly because many people who acknowledge their ancestors have been accused of being evil and of being anti-God.
The Ndebele Religion:
God (uMlimu)
Living Dead (Good)
The Living
Living Dead (Bad)
