Ok - YES, I have read it - just finished it & it grieves me . . . Why?
Because I have lived through the era she writes about & know much of this to be true from my own personal experience
I never felt right about the moral majority & Falwell & promoting of Politicians & pastors in bed together & I’ve lived to watch it grow to a crescendo - There were evangelical pastors & leaders that DID challenge it & still do
I remember being a young pastor at an SBC convention when special forces soldiers came repelling from the rafters - I support our troops but knew this wasn’t right - not in a worship service of Jesus, glorifying war & death
Bill Gothard has been the cause for many a miserable home for women & children-nothing like a single man telling everyone else how to do it-I remember growing up hearing preaching/teaching on women & thought ‘man I’m glad I’m not a woman’ - their lot was not easy & still is not
Perhaps because of my godly loving mother, but I always knew the racism I grew up around was wrong - it grieves me in some places I grew up it’s even worse now with preachers using their authority to hold others down because of their skin color
I have lived through the Islamophobia she writes about having paid a price to build bridges with Muslims - never have we generated more hate with such little wrong information leading to a fear that rejects love of neighbor let alone loving your enemies
I do believe there is context that can’t be overlooked - the destruction of homes, drugs, sexual promiscuity, & more which created a concern for how to save homes & restore people as well as men confused about their identity
I do believe some of these evangelical leaders were strategic in what they did & what they wanted to accomplish in leading evangelicals - but I also believe most pastors & everyday Christians were not, they were used perhaps without realizing it but most know something is wrong
And yet-Jesus is just fine. The Gospel unchanged. God is in control. The church is being purified. Sickness is being driven out of the body of Christ - & that part that refuses a complete Gospel will be purged & pruned by God. The Kingdom of God is still among us & moves forward
Even if we disagree with an author, we should read books like this, they cause us to pause & reflect & correct things that are wrong - Thankyou for writing this @kkdumez even if I’m going to bed sad

Young pastor - spend your time praying, serving, loving, engaging with every kind of person there is for the sake of the Gospel - not fighting for power or control or being used in denominational politics - it will the the waste of your life
God placed something in you when he called you - you are going to have to listen & think like never before - the world is complex & the church compromised - God will use you powerfully if you listen to HIM!
The dream that God put in your heart will not be fulfilled by any organization but only by the Holy Spirit who fills us with the love of Jesus
I love the term soft power - it appeals to the heart & mind out of a moral conviction of right & wrong in a shared humanity calling us to our higher selves & noble aspirations
The Kingdom of God prevails by soft power
Christians who live by soft power in the public square, guided by the Holy Spirit, will do more to bring peace & heal brokenness than all the combined forces of hard power - the problem is you gotta be ready to climb up on that cross #JustLikeJesus
My son for Christmas got me an 1841 track of a church in Newbury, Mass not just condemning slavery but excommunicating pastors & members of other churches who practiced & supported it - how might 1861 been different had they repented?
Roger Williams challenged slavery, stealing Indian lands, & promoted religious freedom for all not just Puritans - he lost the argument but his language won in our founding documents that would ultimately undo slavery
From the Pilgrims, to the colonies, to early America from Winthrop to Edwards & Whitfield it was challenged & condemned as sin - the idea that it was everyone & the way culture was is wrong - it was seen as one of those things that should not be brought to America & left behind
I have known @pastordmack since we both started seminary together, started our churches together & I love him deeply & support him - but it’s not just him I support but every African American pastor & church in the SBC - U cannot deny what he wrote dwightmckissic.wordpress.com/2020/12/13/fro…
I honestly do not know enough about CRT to critique but Res9 makes clear that Scripture trumps it - this it is NOT worth all of this - as the convention started because of slavery we only validate the critique of a watching lost word that we are racist - what does that do to us
What does it do to the Gospel we preach? Acts 6 they went overboard to accommodate a group that was offended because of an ethnic difference
I love my country far more than I love a political party - I’m heartbroken seeing our country ripped apart. This is not right nor who we are nor what our ancestors gave their lives for.
Guard your tongue carefully - what you post & repost on social media - you don’t want to be a part of ripping our country apart.
My biggest prayer is for our democracy to be strong - what difference does it make who wins if we destroy ourselves & fuel hatred towards others
