We sold everything we owned,
Except for 2 suitcases each,
And moved to a 3rd World Country.

Here are 5 things we did in our quest to find our life’s purpose.

// A THREAD // Image
First of all, there are no rules.

“Go to school,
get good grades,
get into a good college,
graduate and get a good job.”

IT'S NOT A RULE.
As a matter of fact, in many cases,

It’s a lie.

If you’re stuck in a job, you hate going to every day,
If you’re stuck in a life, you don’t recognize anymore,

Maybe you’re not fulfilling your higher purpose.
1. What are you good at?

Brain dump. Write down every possible idea you can think of.

“I’m good at writing love letters.”
“I’m good at taking photos of old people.”
“I’m good at restoring old furniture.”

Don’t edit.
Write down every single idea you have.
What would you do,
every day,
even if you were “failing?”

Add to your list daily.
Meditate on your list.

Listen to your list.
2. Hire a coach

“But there are no coaches for writing love letters.”

(BOOM! There’s a purpose.)

Find SOMEONE who's been there.

Start getting better at whatever it is you love and whatever it is you’re good at.

Do something every day.
3. Volunteer. Donate time. Donate money.

The world is bigger than you.

Explore communities and cultures in your city and across the world.

Commit to a weekend. Commit to a week.

Then, maybe,

Commit to a lifetime.
4. Meet new people

Often this is the spark that will inspire you.

Join a club.
Visit a church.
Start training for a marathon.
Reach out to people through DM's.

Everyone has a story.

We just need to listen.

Be
Brave
5. Read

Reading connects us to people we’ll never meet and places we may never go.

Start with,

Man’s Search For Meaning by Victor Frankl,
And
Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert.
When you find your higher purpose,
Everything changes.

You get new eyes,
And you get a new heart.

Nothing is ever the same.

Never. Stop. Searching.

When we sold everything to move to Guatemala,

A country that has 100 murders a week,

Our friends thought we were crazy & our family threatened to cut us off .

// tiny thread // Image
10 years later, some of them are still shaking their head, waiting for us to fold up and come back home.

We're still here, living in one of the most beautiful corners of the planet, serving the poor.

Thriving.
What are you putting off?
What are you doing that people would call you crazy for?

What do you really have to lose?

I’ve made a TON of mistakes.

If I could,
I’d send these 21 words of advice,
to my 21-year-old self.

Reward toxic people in your life,

With distance.
The government won’t save you.

There aren’t enough stimulus checks to dig you out of your bad habits.

How we got out $45,000 of debt in one year.

It wasn’t sexy.

(thread)
You have to want it.

We were tired of not having enough money at the end of the month. Exhausted really.

We owned two small businesses and we were grossing $90,000 a year!

If we lost even one of our clients, we would have been in real trouble.
Have a strong driving reason to get out of debt this way.

• we wanted to give more
• we wanted to make the world a better place

We couldn't do that in debt.

I completed my 55th trip around the sun a few days ago.

No regrets. None.

This is how I got to a place

full of adventure,
full of life,
full of love
and filled with gratitude

With all my heart, I wish the same for you.

When you tell someone you love them,

Mean it.
Learn to be alone.

Alone doesn’t equal lonely.

If I Die

An open letter to my 8 kids.

"We live a fairly crazy life and we live in a fairly crazy country.

If I die, I want you to know..."

(thread)
I love you.

I always have.
I would do anything for you.
I would gladly give you my heart.
Elizabeth Stone said it best,

“Making the decision to have a child - it is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body. ”

23 Secrets To A Happy Marriage

If Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates couldn't make it work, what hope is there? (thread)
My wife and I have been married 23 years today. I have to wonder if this list would have helped.
1. Be adventurous.
