So, apropos of nothing, if you're interested in the Chinese wuxia genre, but hate old movies just BECAUSE, I commend to you "Shadow", the gorgeous 2018 take by Zhang Yimou that employs the best of the genre while avoiding the, umm, less-accessible bits
And while I'm at it: the best modern samurai film I've seen (& I've seen a LOT of samurai films) must be "13 Assassins", which whiplashes from serene idiomatic exchanges to horrific/imaginative/bloody battle. Magnificent madness in this Takeshi Miike redo
Try to watch the domestic version which has a supernatural element that gets downplayed in the international release
Both "Shadow" and "13 Assassins" are quite similar in that they have long and quiet starts that might frustrate an unfamiliar action fan. But the payoff for the patient is incredible in both. I'm surprised neither got the international recognition they deserved

#MengWanzhou has suffered a major blow to her extradition battle, with the judge REJECTING a trove of HSBC documents as evidence scmp.com/news/china/dip… via @scmpnews
Meng's lawyers had pinned high hopes that these documents would prove that the US fraud case against Meng was bogus, that the Americans had misled the BC Supreme Court, and that Meng would be freed. BUT NO DICE
Canadian govt lawyers (representing US interests) said the hundreds of pages of documents were irrelevant to an extradition hearing and should be raised at Meng's trial instead. Associate Chief Justice Heather Holmes didn't release reasons, but it appears she agreed

Why do nerd billionaires all eventually try to pretend to be cool? Isn’t it enough to be the richest, most powerful men on the planet? Stop acting like Tony Stark and stop going to the gym so much, it’s embarrassing

My Mum and Dad met as children in the 1930s, partnered up as teenagers, and were inseparable until the day pa exited this world a few years back. Just a random tweet of admiration, folks
Both families simply assumed them to be a love match from the time they were very small children. How unusual to live your whole life - like, from the time of your first memories - knowing that you had found The One? And being right! It's incredible, when I think about it
As children we grew up listening each night to Mum and Dad talking in bed. Both were busy (five kids!), and so this was when they'd catch up and discuss their day. After Dad passed, Mum never broke the habit. She ended each day with a conversation to the empty side of the bed

When fire consumed Lytton, claiming lives and ruining others, there was a further loss: the destruction of a precious collection of Chinese-Canadian heritage at the Lytton Chinese History Museum scmp.com/news/china/dip… via @SCMPNews
This tiny, award-winning gem of a museum housed 1,600 artefacts documenting the contributions and travails of Chinese miners, rail workers and others in the region. All lost now ImageImage
The museum was the award-winning passion project of Lorna Fandrich, its owner, creator and curator (pic by Lytton Chinese History Museum) Image
