I’ve shared several times that I gladly got the COVID vaccine, that my whole immediate family has, that I’m very happy I did and that I jumped to get the vaccine as soon as I could.

What I didn’t share is that this is unusual for me. I had never before been a vaccine person.
I am one of those parents who had concerns about “normal” vaccines (measles/mumps). I didn’t get a flu shot in my entire life until a few years ago - and then swore I’d never get one again because my arm got stiff (I got one since).

But COVID is different. I wanted THIS vaccine.
I would not have characterized myself as an anti-vaxxer. But with other things, I was not the kind of person rushing out to get every available shot.

So why did I work so hard to get the COVID vaccine as soon as I possibly could? I was ready to fly somewhere to get my shot.
I did the math.

Those of you who follow me know that there are few things in life I like more than having something to calculate. I analyze things.

The chances of me dying or getting really sick from COVID were MUCH greater than of having an issue from the vaccine. No brainer!
(The vaccine that, by the way, was given to every living US President. I mean, I have a healthy sense of self-worth, but I don’t think I’m more important to society than them.

No one is saying “it’s safe for every current/former POTUS. But we’re worried about this random dude!”)
The Pfizer vaccine was approved by the FDA on December 11th of last year. The day before, on December 10th, there had been 15,696,634 confirmed cases of COVID in the US and 292,771 deaths. Meaning that 1.87% of the people known to have had it died. Which is insane!
As of right now, 55.98% of the US population has gotten at least one COVID vaccine shot and 48.49% of the population is fully vaccinated. And, with very few exceptions, we're not the ones now dying from COVID and being put in ICUs .
github.com/nytimes/covid-…
ourworldindata.org/covid-vaccinat…
And this new Delta variant, which we have because the virus, a living organism, continues to change and mutate the more people keep spreading it around, is so contagious that every person who has it will, on average, spread it to 6 other people.

The unvaccinated are in danger.
I understand being nervous about vaccines in general. I get it. But COVID isn't the measles. It ain't the flu. It's an airborne virus that spreads extremely easily. It infects folks who don't know that they have it and who feel fine. And it kills a percentage of those who get it.
My decision to get vaccinated was the easiest medical decision I ever made. It's not even close.
I figured that there was decent chance that if I got COVID, I'll get sick at least. Maybe hospitalized. And a higher than acceptable chance that I'll die.

Think about it. If there were a 1 in 50 chance that something would kill you, wouldn't you do something else if you could?
And a comparably infinitesimal chance that something goes wrong from taking the vaccine. The vaccine the wealthy were cutting in line to get (note to black folks who fear vaccines: a good clue it's not some anti-black conspiracy is when rich white folks are taking it first).
Some decisions in life are hard and require a lot of deep thought.

Unless you have some very unusual medical circumstances, getting vaccinated from COVID isn't one of them.

It's a no-brainer.
The virus is out there, wherever you live, continually adapting itself to outwit our bodily defenses and finding any opportunity to get through the air from infected people to not-yet-infected people. If you're not vaccinated, you're a sitting duck.

Please do the math.

Reconstruction ended around the time of the 1876 election.

The Jim Crow era unofficially drew to a close around the time of the 1964 election.

Between 1876 and 1964, the Democrats won the majority of the former Confederate states in every single Presidential election.
Since 1964, only once did a Democrat win a majority of the former Confederate states in a Presidential election.

Coincidentally or not, states which were the stronghold of the segregationist Democrats have become the stronghold of the modern-day Republicans.
What’s weird is that there are some Republicans today who say they dislike Democrats but who seem to have some sort of a romanticized fixation on Confederate leaders. Who, of course, were all Democrats.

I am reposting my series on facts about the 2020 Election, which I call the #TrumpLost project. Here's a bunch of facts that show that Donald Trump lost the 2020 election, for anyone who has been listening to Trump's lies and needs to be reassured that he lost.
If Trump had somehow managed to win the election, it would have been at odds with a LOT of historical patterns. Presidents as unpopular as Trump don't get re-elected. And when the economy tanks as badly as it did in 2020, the incumbent party doesn't historically win.
Trump may be loved by the #MAGA crowd and those at @CPAC. But he was deeply disliked by moderate voters and he lost the support of Independents. Generally speaking according to historical patterns, this results in losing a Presidential election.

@ScottJenningsKY, I have complimented you in the past but I take issue with your denial that the GOP is trying to suppress voting. The evidence that they are is multifaceted and overwhelming.

Yes, Trump improved over his 2016 margins with black voters. But he lost black voters 87-12. And sadly, THAT’s both an improvement and also the best the GOP has done with black voters in a while, as you said on air. Probably premature to pop the champagne on that.
You deftly tried to pivot a conversation about the GOP’s voter suppression into a conversation on voter ID, which is not the same thing. What is happening is that the GOP, in every competitive state it controls, is enacting laws to make voting harder. You know it, I know it.

There are people in this country who, because of Trump's Biggest Lie, do not believe or at least doubt the fact that Trump did in fact lose the 2020 election.

I have done a lot of research on the election and here are some facts that corroborate the fact that Trump DID lose. Image
I have dozens and dozens of these and keep finding more. I don't have time to put these together all at the same time but I am going to keep adding to these here for anyone who needs to see them or share them.

This thread will continue to grow as I add more facts.

Another metric: the percentage of Americans who say they feel proud to be Americans has risen since Trump left office.

news.gallup.com/poll/351791/am…
The percentage of Americans who said they felt “extremely” or “very” proud to be Americans had fallen from 75% in March, 2017 to 63% in May/June, 2020, during Trump’s tenure. It declined every single year of his Presidency.

It’s back up to 69% now.
% of Americans saying they felt “extremely” or “very” proud to be Americans:

Obama era:
January, 2009 - 82%
June, 2013 - 85%
June, 2016 - 81%

Trump era:
March, 2017 - 75%
June, 2018 - 72%
June, 2019 - 70%
May/June, 2020 - 63%

Biden era:
June, 2021 - 69%

Just because a lot of the types who go to events like the #TrumpRally and who tweet out things like #TRUMP2024ToSaveAmerica might still believe his lies about the election, I’m here to help.

#TrumpLost. And it’s time everyone made their peace with that fact. Here’s some facts …
