If one of us is chained, none of us are free. One of the earliest acts of civil disobedience in America was the signing of the Declaration of Independence. #velshi
2/15
The 56 men who put pen to paper accepted that there would be consequences for suspending their obligations to Great Britain, but they did so anyway. It made them criminals, though they preferred to be thought of as patriots. #velshi
3/15
That act of civil disobedience - breaking a law because it was unjust - led to the American Revolution, and from it, a democracy was born. Or was it? Because if one of us is chained, none of us are free. #velshi
4/15
The early drafts of the Constitution essentially awarded a full set of rights only to white men who owned land. Throughout America’s long, tortured history, women, black people and other marginalized groups have had to fight tooth and nail for equality. #velshi
5/15
Civil disobedience - refusing to comply with certain unjust laws as a form of peaceful protest - became one of the most powerful catalysts for change. #velshi

In 1966, gay men were refused service at bars. Three men walked into a New York City establishment. They announced that they were gay and asked for a drink. It became known as the Sip In. #velshi

Around 1965, thousands of young men across America burned their draft cards in rebellion against the War in Vietnam. #velshi

Rosa Parks knew perfectly well that she would be arrested for not giving up her bus seat to a white man in 1955. She sat there anyway. John Lewis and Martin Luther King Jr. were arrested a combined 70 times during the civil rights movement. #velshi

Today, activists and lawmakers are willingly getting arrested to fight for voting rights. And the entire chamber of democratic state legislators in Texas have left the state to protest laws that would break our democracy in two. #velshi
10/15
Because, they realize, if one of us is chained, none of us are free. The chains are the restrictions on voting. Breaking them is democracy. Republicans across this nation are imposing restrictions on some Americans' right to vote. #velshi
11/15
It a right that is written into the Constitution - the 15th Amendment reads, “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” #velshi
12/15
Here's the good part: "The Congress shall have the power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation." Maybe you don’t live in a state that is actively suppressing your rights as outlined in the constitution, but you do live in THESE United States. #velshi
13/15
Maybe you personally have better access to voting and ballot boxes and mail in voting that those in Texas and Georgia will have. According to this, that's not their problem; it's EVERYBODY’S problem. A democracy is not a democracy as long as some people can’t vote. #velshi
14/15
If only one person in the United States is stripped of their rights, then we are not a democracy. Our union is not yet perfect. If one of us is chained, none of us are free. And that is why people are willing to get arrested. #velshi
15/15
It’s what John Lewis meant when he said, “get into good, NECESSARY trouble.” This is THE moment to protest. Loudly. And demand action. Because, if one of us is chained, none of us are free. #velshi

What’s the point in getting vaccinated, if people are getting covid anyway? This is an emerging mindset among the unvaccinated since reports of so-called “breakthrough infections” have become more frequent. #velshi
2/12
That kind of mindset is putting millions at risk. If there are people in your orbit using breakthrough cases as an excuse *not* to get vaccinated, this is what they need to know… #velshi
3/12
Breakthrough cases occur in fully vaccinated people who test positive for coronavirus. But there’s a difference between testing positive...and getting sick. #velshi

For the last year or so we’ve been warning about the infiltration of Q-Anon conspiracy theorists into our federal government. #velshi

Many of the January 6th Insurrectionists, if they weren’t wearing logos of their own far right or militia groups, were seen with Q Anon shirts, flags and another paraphernalia. #velshi
3/15
They believed and espouse fantastical and ridiculous conspiracy theories, including that democrats and the media are part of a Satan-worshipping, pedophile and baby-eating cabal. Or at least that’s what they were in their early days. #velshi

“Physicians raced to provide fluids to patients who arrived breathless, dizzy and drenched in sweat. Others were brought in on stretchers, their body temperatures so high their central nervous systems had shut down…#velshi#climatecrisis

Those who could still speak told of stifling apartments and sun that made their skin sizzle.”
That quote from the Washington Post sounds like something out of the Sahara Desert. But no. #velshi

That was life in Portland, Oregon just this past week. Portland’s average temperature in the beginning of July ranges from low 50s to high of 80s. Last week, it reached 115 degrees Fahrenheit. #velshi#climatechange

July 4th - Independence Day, is a celebration of America’s freedom from British rule. It’s cemented by the Declaration of Independence - a piece of paper declaring the unalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit if happiness in America. #velshi
2/13
That document hides a stark reality that in the year it was written, fully one-fifth of the American population was in bondage. The newly independent "free" nation still held hundreds of thousands of Black people in slavery. #velshi

Many of the Colonists who fought to remove the bonds of what they called British oppression saw no contradiction in the fact that they bought and sold human beings themselves. #velshi

We are witnessing an active cover-up on Capitol Hill. The leaders of the Republican party are no longer just playing dumb when it comes to the January 6th insurrection - they are openly trying to mask a deadly attack on our democracy. #velshi

This week the House voted to create a special select committee to investigate what happened before, during & after the assault on the Capitol. Democrats were forced to take this step because Republicans previously blocked a commission that would have done the same. #velshi
3/13
Two Republicans voted with Democrats in favor of the committee: Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy wasn’t happy about this. Because in his eyes, his GOP henchmen have a duty to uphold the Big Lie and certainly not the truth. #velshi

Seven of the world’s most powerful leaders are spending a sunny, warm weekend in the tranquil, English coastal village of Carbis Bay. It’s a picturesque ocean backdrop for the G7 summit. #velshi

The view, can almost make you forget that this beautiful planet that we call home, is deteriorating fast because of climate change. For the first time in 4 years, the U.S. has returned to being one of the most environmentally conscious countries in the world. #velshi

President Biden has taken several steps toward cleaner air & a cleaner planet here at home, from re-instituting climate protections undone by the prior administration… #velshi
