Jyotirlingam, is a devotional representation of the Hindu god Shiva. It represents the atman, the soul, which is seen as light, infinite & eternal light.

It is the light of knowledge, the light of illumination, the light of Truth, Aum Tat Sat.
The Lingam is the energy of creation, it is represented by a round stone (symbolic of the dome of the sky) and sitting in the yoni (representing the earth).

In the Taittirīya Upanishad of Yajurveda, the twelve principles of Brahma, Maya, the Jiva / Life, the mind, intellect, subconscious mind, ego & the panchamahabhutas / 5 basic elements of life has been refered to as the 12 Jyotirlinga. 🕉️

According to Siva Mahāpurāṇa, once Brahma (the god of creation) & Vishnu (the god of preservation) had an argument over supremacy of creation to settle the debate, God Shiva pierced the three worlds appearing as a huge infinite pillar of light -

Vishnu & Brahma split their ways to downwards and upwards respectively to find the end of the light in either direction. Brahma lied that he found out the end, while Vishnu conceded his defeat. This lie of Brahma angered Shiva making him curse Brahma,

even though he is the creator of the universe he would not be worshipped. The jyotirlinga is the Supreme Shiva, part less reality, out of which Shiva appeared in another form. Each of the 12  jyotirlinga sites take the name of the presiding deity,

All 12 Jyotirlinga considered a different manifestation of Shiva. At all these sites, the primary image is lingam representing the beginning less and endless Stambha pillar, symbolising the infinite nature of Lord Shiva. 🕉️

There are 12 Jyotirlinga sites found in India which is associated with 12 Zodiac Signs in Vedic Astrology. The cause of one creation & purpose,our Atmakarka soul journey in this life is seen from Linga that is associated with zodiac signs.
The 12 Jyotirlinga as are follows -

• Rameshwaram - Aries ( मेष ) ♈

This Jyotirlinga is associated with Ramayana & named after Lord Rama. In Brihit Parashara Hora Shastra sage parashara associated lord Rama with Sun as he represent Dharma and our atmakarka. Sun get exalted in Aries sign.

this is where the Sun has the most vitality, vigor and ability to express its energy. Sun represent power and leadership quality.
Chanting mantra " Aum Namah Shivaya , Namo Rameshwaraya "
help us in strengthening aries rashi in our life. 🙏🏽

•Somanath - Taurus ( वृषभ )♉

As per Hinduism it is believed Chandra / Moon once was cursed and he prayed to Lord Shiva at the exact site of the temple, lord shiv appeared before Chandra & freed him from the curse.Moon regained his brightness & Somanath became a sacred shrine.

In other legendary story Somnath was built in gold by the Moon god (Soma), in silver by the Sun god (Surya) and in wood by Lord Krishna.
Moon get exalted in Taurus,it is place of abundance & fulfilment of emotional & materialism.

"Aum Namah Shivaya Namo Somanathaya"

•Nageshwar - Gemini ( मिथुन ) ♊

 This temple symbolizes the confiscation of evil forces from earth. Shiv Purana describes the story about the temple and says that Lord Shiva started staying here in the form of Jyothirlinga after killing the demon named Daruka.

According to Jaimini it is the exaltation place of Rahu. Worshipping nagesheshwar jyotirlinga or chanting this mantra removes obstacles and malefic effects of rahu,gives blessings & abundance.
Mantra for Nageshwar is Aum Namah Shivaya Namo Nagesheshwaraya. 🙏🏽

•Omkareshwar - Cancer ( कर्क ) ♋

 It is named after omkar (the sound of Om 🕉️), Omkareshwar is the jyotir lingam which represents the Lord Shiva in the form of omkar.
Om is the sound of the universe. Om is all encompassing, the essence of ultimate reality.

Cancer is Jupiter's exaltation, it is the sign where brihaspati / Guru has full strength and gives his highest blessings.
Worshiping & chanting Omkareshwar's mantra strengthen Jupiter in our life.
Mantra - Aum Namah Shivaya Namo Omkareshwaraya. 🙏🏽

• Vaidyanatha - Leo (सिंह ) ♌

This Jyotirlinga was established by King Ravana.He was a devotee of lord Shiva.
This Jyotirling (Shiv’s idol) here is in the form of a Vaidya (doctor). Worshipping him relieve the devotees of their dreadful diseases.

This Jyotirlinga symbolizes the moolatrikona sign of Surya. It also symbolizes the natural 5th house of Kalpurush Kundali. This house denotes purva punya ( past life karma), Ishta Devata, bhakti, intelligence & children.
Vaidyanatha Mantra-
Aum Namah Shivaya Namo Vaidyanatha.

•Mallikarjuna - Virgo ( कन्या ) ♍

This is unique jyotirlinga as both Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are present here as the Jyotirlinga. Mallikarjuna is an amalgamation of two words, wherein 'Mallika' refers to Goddess Parvati & 'Arjuna' refers to Lord Shiva.

Virgo is exaltation of Mercury where mercury has full strength.
Worshipping & chanting Mallikarjuna's mantra strengthen mercury in our life.

•Mahakaleshwara - Libra (तुला ) ♎

Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga situated in the ancient city of Ujjain, India. Lord Shiva in the lingam form is believed to be Swayambhu, deriving currents of power (Shakti) from within itself.
Libra is the sign where Saturn gets exalted.

Saturn represent Mahakala.
A prayer to Mahakaleshwar jyotirlinga blesses native with good health and jeeva / life as Lord shiva in form of Mahakala is pacified. It also gives shani's blessings in our life.

•Grishneshwar - Scorpio( वृश्चिक ) ♏

It is a unique jyotirlinga exits near Ellora caves. Other then Shiv Purana this temple has been mentioned in Padma purana, as per the legends this place was the place of Naga Tribals and they used to worship this Jyotirlinga.

Scorpio is the sign of dual lordship of Ketu and Mars. Worshipping Grishneshwar jyotirlinga removes malefic effects of ketu and mangal from our life and blesses native with abundance & spiritual enlightenment.

•Kasi Vishwanath - Sagittarius ( धनु )

This jyotirlinga exist in the ancient living city of the world 'Varanasi', it where Lord shiva resides. This place is so sacred that this shrine is mentioned in the Skanda Puranda, which is an ancient Hindu scripture.

jupiter is the ruler of Sagittarius rashi & ketu ( moksha karka) gets exalted in sagittarius therefore kasi vishwanath jyotirlinga temple is known to send atma ( soul) towards moksha (salvation). Hindus all over the world visit Kasi vishwanath for this reason.

Worshipping & chanting kasi Vishwanath jyotirlinga gives u blessings of Jupiter & Ketu.

•Bhimashankara - Capricorn (मकर ) ♑
in the Sahyadri rang of Maharashtra, contains a Jyotirlinga shrine associated with Lord Shiva destroying the demon Tripurasura.
It is believed that this ancient shrine was built around a swayambhu linga i.e linga that originated on its own.

Capricorn is the sign of Saturn where Mars gets exalted. Worshipping Bhimashankara Jyotirlinga indicates overcoming death and sufferings.

•Kedarnath - Aquarius ( कुंभ ) ♒

The legend behind this famous place of worship is that after the Mahabharata war, the Pandavas performed a penance to purge their sins – of killing their kin. In order to be able to do this, they were advised to seek Lord Shiva’s pardon.

They searched high & low and finally, saw Lord Shiva at the spot where the jyotirlinga in Kedarnath is situated today.
Aquarius sign is co ruled by rahu & saturn,worshipping this Jyotirlinga gives us longevity ( saturn) & blessings.

•Tryambakeshwara - Pisces (मीन ) ♓

Trimbakeshwar, near Nasik in Maharashtra ,has a jyotirlinga shrine associated with the origin of the Godavari river. There are three lingas shaped like thumbs, that's why it is called Tryambakeshwara. Of these three lingas, the linga of -

Lord Shiva has a constant shower of water from an orifice above,it serves as natural source of water coming down to abhishek him.

Venus gets exalted in Pisces sign. Venus, the planet with the power to give rebirth / liberation ( Moksha)

Shukra is also the possessor of Sanjeevani Mantra (Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra)
Worshipping Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga and chanting Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra cures disease and gives path for liberation.

By doing meditation on these Jyotirlingam, chanting its mantras,& by pilgrimage to this holy site, one comes closer to an understanding of purpose of their atman (soul) in this life. It brings success, removal of sins of past births,remembrances of past lives,ability to see God.
