“lack of progress” since November 2019 as “frustrating and scary” ... hmmm, I think the lack of progress since November 1989 when Mr David Tripper called it an "issue of vital concern" has been frustrating and scary - climatenorthernireland.org/news/climate-e…
To be blunt, climate change policy can be aptly described as 30 years of relative inaction, dithering and fiddling whilst producing oodles of hot air.
X : I don't see you being active in the field?
Me : I used to be. Back in the early 90s when we had a chance to mitigate.
X : Why did you stop?
Me : It became obvious back then that we wouldn't mitigate or take serious action until the effects overwhelmed us ...
.... I have many friends who have remained in the field but they moved on from trying to stop climate change to looking at ways of adapting / surviving its worst effects long ago.
X : What about technology?
Me : Ah, the belief that some magic technology will be invented that'll reverse the effects. Basically, we've been waiting for the second coming of the prophet Zarquon for 30 years. I hope they hurry up.
X : Do you have anything positive to say?
Me : Yes. XR (extinction rebellion) are fabulous. A forward thinking distributed organisation that is focused on all of us. Alas, our home secretary calls them criminals but ... the criminal thing is 30 years of inaction.
X : Well, what is your suggestion then?
Me : Sarcasm? In the early 90s we knew two things mattered - energy production and consumption. We've made some progress on energy production but I see little progress on consumption. Instead we have a bit of recycling, maybe go vegan etc.
The problem back in the early 90s was concerns about "market" impact. We also had the ozone hole debacle which we were "solving" (Montreal protocol etc) and so people assumed that we could "solve" climate change without "damaging the market". That has been the mantra ever since.
Hence we end up with "Green economy", in order for others to see revenue and profitability in it.
The blunt truth, without a reasonably habitable environment then there is no economy, there is no market. The market yields to the environment and not the other way around.
X : Aren't we reducing energy consumption?
Me : There will be some but we're also offshoring it ... what do you think happens when we buy products from other nations? This is part of the problem of not having transparency on supply chains. You will not solve this until you do.
X : I don't understand why not?
Me : Greed. People will game the system until you do have transparency.
X : Those are a bit dramatic.
Me : Really? Habitability is a transitional not a permanent state. Back in the 90s we used to point to Earth's twin - Venus - as the example. Once a planet, much like our own, which had oceans. We're messing with dramatic stuff.
X : Space?
Me : Oh, that old chestnut. Humans go into space. Sure, I know a lot of very wealthy financiers who think this is the answer. The question you need to ask yourself is "which humans"? It's not "all humans" into space and you're unlikely to be on the party invite.
X : But living in space ...
Me : ... are we going to have a discussion on delusion versus reality?
X : What should we do?
Me : Vote for politicians who are focused on the "collective we" over the "individual me" i.e. next time you have a chance to vote for a Corbyn (not likely in my lifetime in the UK), don't mess it up. Also, take individual action -
X : You don't like the home secretary?
Me : I have no confidence (see also the police - theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/j…) for many reasons e.g. XR as criminals, undermining our national heroes for taking the knee and supporting the death penalty - to start.

X : Is bitcoin a ponzi scheme?
Me : No. It's far more malicious than that - blog.gardeviance.org/2013/11/a-spoi… ... however, there is some good stuff going on in the crypto currency community.
X : Do you think UK Gov should be involved.
Me : I think UK should be involved in building huge crypto mining facilities built on renewable energy and local grown tech. Its growth should be funded by those mining operation.
X : UK adopt bitoin?
Me : Oh, no ...
Me : At the same time as building mining facilities it should severely limit the internal use (UK) of bitcoin. The goal is to get the mining to pay for renewable capability and local tech. At some point you switch off mining. You want others adopting bitoin, not yourself.
X : Thought on John Lewis getting into rental properties?
Me : You mean this - theguardian.com/business/2021/… ... very timely, very smart.
X : Really, rental?
Me : No, think of it like John Lewis Kitchens, John Lewis Bathrooms, John Lewis Decorating, John Lewis Roof Extensions ...
X : You are kidding?
Me : Nope. There's a huge market for a trusted name to come into the home improvement space. Not just selling supplies but project management. The market is screaming for it. This is a good move by John Lewis, focused on the users, adapting with the times.
Me : The whole building 10,000 rental properties should be seen as cover for building up the capabilities, networks, supply chains and testing environment to launch a nationwide home improvement service. I assume this is what John Lewis is upto. It's on the ball.
X : Have you seen the culture map?
Me : Which one?
X : This one.
Me : Ah ...
X : Ah?
Me : Well, I like relative comparisons but it's not a "map", it's not even a "graph" (in which the connection between nodes has meaning). It's a collection of sliders, best seen like this ...
... that doesn't mean it's not useful, I think it's a fascinating way of discussing certain issues. However, my interest is in maps.
X : How do you value people?
Me : That's an odd question. People aren't resources.
X : But we talk about them as assets.
Me : Them? Gosh, this all feels uncomfortable.
X : But how would you value?
Me : hmmm ...
... it depends upon what your society values, more "Me" or "We" or a bit of both.
X : Explain.
Me : You have "Me" values such as salary, possessions, knowledge, expertise etc. Then you have"We" values such as giving back to society, enabling others.
X : How can you value then?
Me : If you're thinking assets then people die. So, the "Me" always reduces to zero. However the "We" value can continue for much longer, they can become embedded in the memory of the collective itself through symbols (like statues) or heroes of some story.
Me : Oh. Social stuff will happen, kicking off around 2025-2030 and ongoing to 2040.
X : What stuff?
Me : There are couple of different paths, anyway that's from a time ago.
X : You're not answering.
Me : I know. But we will see soon enough.
X : Still not any clearer. Perhaps put your predictions in escrow?
Me : No interest. I've even removed it from the heatmap and I don't make any claim other than it was a mistake to include it in the first place. On the upside it got me thinking more about culture and society ...
Setting up 365, need to integrate google calendar and ... read only. Are you effing kidding me, this is 2021. Ok, well at least I can have an integrated mailbox ... oh wait, no? I need to create search function or script. Jesus ... this is just a turd.
Oh, I can use Google Workspace Sync for Microsoft Outlook (GWSMO) if I'm a G-Sync user ... I wonder when they forget the bit about focusing on user needs and replaced it with focusing on business needs. Gosh, I wish Amazon did email and calendars. That would actually work.
Sorry G-Suite not G-Sync ... any suggestions on good packages out there which integrate Google / Mac / Outlook together in a sensible way with 2 way sync across multiple devices or is that something which doesn't exist in practical terms?
