The findings of @GASecofState’s secret study of Georgia’s controversial new touchscreen voting machines (BMDs) are similar to a 2004 study of DRE’s with so-called Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trails (VVPATs), which are now widely disfavored due 2 concerns about verifiability. 1/
.@GaSecofState’s study didn’t even reach the question of what percent of voters will be able to notice and report inaccuracies caused by the BMDs in marking their “paper ballots” for them. But other studies of VVPATS and BMDs suggest the percent is unacceptably low. 3/
4/ In a 2005 MIT study of DREs w/ VVPATs, “Out of 108 elections that contained errors [VVPAT not matching a test voter’s selection], … NO ERRORS WERE REPORTED [by the test voters].”ted.selker.com/documents/resu…
5/ A study last year by the University of Michigan showed that voters reported only 7% of inaccuracies on their “paper ballot” caused by a BMD (new touchscreen voting machine) in marking it for the voter. news.engin.umich.edu/2020/01/new-st…
6/ The question remains why @GaSecofState & @GabrielSterling have (1) refused to give in person voters the choice to mark their ballots by hand w/ a pen & (2) failed to educate voters to bring & use their completed sample ballots to verify BMD-marked paper ballots.
7/ Why was I the only one providing this advice? @GaSecofState was as aware of the Michigan study as I was.
8/ The question also remains why @GASecOfState & @GabrielSterling ignored the earlier VVPAT studies & bought BMDs based on mere hopes & prayers that BMDs wld be better than VVPATs. Why didn’t they study BMDs BEFORE buying them (or wait for others to conduct those studies)?!#gapol
9/ Finally, it is totally on brand that @GaSecofState failed to release the results of its study. We know about the study only due to a public records request by @markniesse. So much for transparency.
10/ And what about the lines? Everyone knows that BMDs (like DREs) limit the number of people who can fill out their ballots concurrently to the number of working BMDs at the polling place, a recipe for long lines.
11/ The lines in Georgia were atrocious in 2020 despite a huge number of voters using vote by mail due to the pandemic and concerns about long lines. With Georgia cracking down on vote by mail, we can expect even worse lines in the future. This is unnecessary & unacceptable.

I haven’t read this yet, but will comment when I do. It sure wld be nice if @TheJusticeDept took action re: the destruction of ballot images (public records) in at least 8 Florida counties, including Miami Dade, Palm Beach, Broward, & Seminole. Ordinary citizens shld not have…1/
.@GaSecofState study showed that less than 1/2 of voters reviewed machine marked “paper ballots” to confirm the touchscreen voting machines (BMDs) didn’t cheat or err. This is similar to the results of the 2006 study re: DREs & Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trails. 1/

Here is a link to the 2006 VVPAT study in which only 40 percent of voters reviewed the VVPAT to confirm the voting machines didn’t cheat or err. 3/ usenix.org/legacy/events/…
“The Shelby County [funding] Commission rejected a resolution to purchase [touchscreen] voting machines for a 2d time, sending a resounding message to the Election Commission that they still favor hand-marked paper ballots, not ballot marking devices.” 1/ commercialappeal.com/story/news/loc…
This has been an ongoing battle. The funding commission is led by Democrats, but the Election Commission is led by Republicans. At least one Republican on the funding commission voted with the Democrats this time. 2/ #HandMarkedPaperBallots
Ballot marking devices, which the GOP-led election commission wants to force on this heavily African American county, create all sorts of problems, including longer lines & electronic malfunction. They put the burden on voters to make sure the system didn’t cheat. 3/
After approval by Brian Kemp, the Board of Elections in Morgan County, Georgia, including voting rights champion Helen Butler, was replaced last month. Board Members will all now be selected by the partisan County Commission. by @TheBradBlog#gapolbradblog.com 1/
Butler and the other board members were removed pursuant to local legislation. I previously posted (incorrectly) that they were removed under SB202, another dangerous Georgia bill that includes county takeover provisions. 2/

If Ds respond to Sabatini by defending the integrity of Florida’s internet-connected elections, I will tear my hair out. They shld monitor closely, but must NOT pretend Florida elections aren’t suspect. This is an opportunity for Ds to scrutinize FL elections themselves… or 1/
… at least amplify the many legitimate concerns. I believe Broward has a Republican supervisor of elections as well. 2/
I don’t know Sabatini, but if he is a Trump supporter, I doubt his plan is being conducted in good faith. Yes there will be danger. But there is opportunity here too, and the truth matters. The truth is that Florida’s elections are suspect. 3/
