These data really point in one direction. It’s going to be difficult for previously uninfected, unvaccinated to avoid #COVID19 indefinitely. Fully vaccinated people 'infected with Delta can transmit the virus' uk.news.yahoo.com/cdc-covid-19-o… 1/5
We’re entering a transformative phase of the #COVID19 pandemic in #Ireland and the impact of this phase on our societies (and within groups in society) will likely be lower with higher vaccine coverage. Those vaccinated will be better protected against illness. 2/5
The travesty is that there are many countries around the globe who are unable to defend their societies adequately due to poor vaccine access. Terrible stories emerging around the world. Those with the most need to do more to protect those without. 3/5
It’s not just about giving #vaccines - it’s also about providing expertise and infrastructure to ensure our global brothers and sisters can access vaccine programmes that are capable of delivering the societal protection that is needed and we benefit from. 4/5
#Ireland and @HSELive have a huge amount to offer. Our vaccine programme has so far been a success by international standards - as a country we should lead on supporting those who have the challenge of implementing their own #COVID19 vaccine programmes and save even more lives.
If were going to truly make a meaningful difference this will need a mobilisation of global assistance that will dwarf #liveaid in the ‘80s and @PEPFAR - the most successful to date. As a country we can make a real difference but we need to act NOW! @Irish_Aid

Thread: we've released results (pre-print) of an analysis examining #SARS_CoV_2 variants in #Ireland from hospital cases during 2020. This is the largest analysis of its kind to date in Ireland and provides some important insights into #COVID19Ireland. 1/9 medrxiv.org/content/10.110…
The #COVID19 pandemic in Ireland was notable because we 'crushed' wave 1 (W1) with an effective lockdown and ended up with <5 daily new cases reported by June 2020. After that cases stayed flat until September when cases and hospitalisations rose again (image: @hpscireland) 2/9
We analysed 225 sequences from 4 hospitals in sth east Ireland from March to December 2020 (approx 15% admissions), across waves 1 and 2 of the #COVID19 pandemic. We detected several different variants in W1 but these disappeared with lockdown and didn't re-emerge during W2. 3/9
