When we started justin.tv back in 2007, I had no idea what it would evolve into.

Nearly 15 years later, I sat down with the OG @twitch founders for a special reunion.

Here are some of my favorite moments:
It's 2010, and we were all sitting in @mwseibel 's apartment brainstorming and preparing for our interview with @google the next day

(cont.)
It was already a stressful situation and suddenly I received a phone call from an unlisted number.

A voice asked, 'Hello, is this Justin Kan?'

I instantly regretted answering the phone.
"I lease unban me from justin.tv, there has to be some kind of mistake" he said.

I asked him for his username and he slowly spells it out for me on speaker:

"A N A L _ L U B E _ I N V A D E R"
Long story short, with a name like that and the balls to actually call me on a saturday afternoon to ask for an unban, we followed through and got his account back.
@eshear 's advice for founders to 'build bad things quickly'

The team spent a lot of time arguing and obsessing over each minute detail or feature.
It's often better to just launch features quickly one after the other, and using the feedback to grow rather than sit paralyzed by analytics and speculation.

Just build - even if its crappy.
The 'working dynamic' of the team.

People often ask whether or not we were afraid that dysfunction in working together would threaten our friendship. The answer is no.
And don't get me wrong, we were certainly a dysfunctional team. But at the end of the day, we were all in it together and that's what mattered.

There was a deep trust between us and nothing could change that - no matter how stupid we thought each other's ideas were!
One of the greatest things I learned about co-founding Twitch was extremely personal.

I had cultivated this identity around myself as an entrepreneur. The problem was that I didn't truly enjoy or love doing the things that the role entailed.
I fell in love with inspiring people, being a catalyzer, helping others, and getting people excited about new ideas.

That's why I love investing and creating content so much.

Just launched my pod w/ @ImMollyBloom, the real-life Molly Bloom of 'Molly's Game', on YouTube!

Molly ran an underground poker game for Hollywood's 1%, then got raid by the FBI.

She was left w/ one thing: her story.

Here are a few things Molly wants you to know:

[A thread]
Always remember why you started in the 1st place.

When our motivations change, it is easy to make mistakes. Molly's plan from Day 1 had always been to make money, build connections, then bounce.

But she stayed and her motivations changed. This led to a bunch of bad decisions.
Bigger game, bigger stakes.

The more you have, the more you need to worry about.

When working at waitress' salary, Molly's biggest worry was getting fired. When she brought in $5m/year, she had a gun in her mouth.

It's a lot to have, but a lot to lose.

New pod drop with @Conaw on:

Evangelical churches, networked thoughts and why @RoamResearch is about writing a Bible together.

[A thread]
[0:38-14:02]

An anthropology major, Conor spent nine months immersing himself and studying Evangelical Christian communities.

A fateful motorcycle crash led him to sleep on a stranger's couch. When debating about God, Conor realized that Christianity is about fellowships.
[31:22-40:03]

Roam became an extension of his philosophy: seeking truth, through collective intel. Its first step is to help people take notes differently.

Each note uploads a mental network to the cloud. Think of the multiplayer mode of Roam as writing a collective Bible.

I struggled with alcohol addiction for over 20 years, among other destructive habits.

Today I launched my app @kinhabits, based on the learnings that saved my life.

Founders need to build better habits, not just better products. Here's why:

[A thread]
I started drinking because I felt an incredible amount of guilt about my failing startup, Exec.

Alcohol made me feel like Superman in social situations, but it also helped me numb the pain when I was alone.
Suppressing my emotions with drinking became an abusive relationship - I was addicted to the delayed pain.

That cycle is not easily broken, but it can be done by breaking old habits and building healthier ones.

Just had (one of) the most powerful and impactful conversations of my life with @balajis

We discuss crypto, decentralization, China, woke culture, and how to build a city:

(thread)
The primitives that a crypto address can give a user are comparable to the explosion of capabilities that mobile and the internet gave you.
In 2013, Balaji predicted that tensions and an eventual backlash were brewing against SV.

The signs were there. No-one caught it; except for Balaji. He called it 'Silicon Valley's Ultimate Exit'

Cool things I learned from @balajis:

Building a city

- Vote with feet + wallet
- Coordinate with social
- Crowd-fund with crypto
- Migrate with mobile

My first company @twitch sold for a billion dollars.

My second one lost $75 million in 36 months.

People love talking about success, but today I'm going to talk about failure.

It's time to be honest about Atrium:
During my time as Partner at @ycombinator, my ambition to build something big only grew.

I took the plunge and decided to follow the 'age-old' wisdom of fixing my own problem and building a startup around the solution.

(cont.)
I hated doing legal work for my startups and never really understood what I was paying for.

The entire experience was too complicated and opaque. I started Atrium to make this easier for founders.
