What #manhattan real estate can teach us about #bitcoin.

๐Ÿงต๐Ÿ‘‡ Image
It's 1818. Robert Lenox pays $500 for a few blocks in the Upper East Side.

"What a deal!" we say today as if we would have done the same thing. But at the time it wasn't a sure bet (hence why someone SOLD him the land). The pop. was 100k; the future, unknown. https://thegreatestgrid.mcn...
By 1874, #NYC population is 1 million and Lenox's land is worth $6 million. (That's +18.2% ann. return for 56 years.)

Here's Lenox's farm in 1885, looking like a Magritte painting: a rural farm surrounded by urban sidewalks and lamp posts. https://thegreatestgrid.mcn...
Grandpa Lenox left the property to his children, who left it to their children, who sold off their portions.

Here's the block today, having been divided into a couple dozen lots, many of which further subdivided into hundreds of individual cubes in the sky. Image
There are a couple lessons here for #bitcoin.

Lesson 1.

The Dutch paid 60 guilders to the Native Americans for Manhattan. From that point on it was there for self discovery & trading. Anyone could buy or sell any portion of it and accept the risks and rewards.
Satoshi created an island in cyberspace and publicly shared the map. From that point on it has been up to each individual to discover that island for themselves and to decide whether or not to stake a claim.

(This is for those that believe โ‚ฟ was "not distributed fairly.")
Lesson 2.

Manhattan was consolidated under the ownership of the Dutch West India Company in 1626 but since then has been subdivided into smaller parcels owned by more people.

That said, Manhattan ownership is still relatively concentrated.

This is where #bitcoin shines...
It's difficult to buy 2 sq. inches of land in Manhattan, but it's easy to buy $2 worth of โ‚ฟ. Anyone out there with conviction large or small can own a proportional piece of the pie.

Plus, bitcoin is already distributed fairly well amongst shrimps and whales and it gets more distributed every day... ๐ŸŒˆ

Lesson 3.

New York is the greatest city in the world and bitcoin is the greatest, too.

The end.

YOU CAN'T BUILD A CATHEDRAL OVER 100 YEARS IF YOUR MONEY DEVALUES 2% PER YEAR.

A thread ๐Ÿงต Image
As an architect and city planner, I've wondered:

"Why aren't we building cathedrals or other grand, timeless buildings anymore?"

Monetary inflation is one of the underlying reasons. Let's take a look...
Say a church has $1b and wants to build a cathedral. The architect and builder determine it will cost $1b and take 100 years.

Let's assume a perfect, value-static money and set inflation at 0%.

After 100 years all funds have been spent and we have a fully built cathedral! Yay! ImageImage

Look around and you'll notice that common units of subdivision are everywhere:

thirds, quarters, and halves are in your clocks, music, measuring cups, and dna.

With this in mind, 12 is better than 10 and the English measurement system is better than Metric.

Here's why... ๐Ÿงต ImageImageImageImage
A meter can be subdivided (without fractions) into halves, fifths, and tenths.

A foot, however, can subdivide into sixths, quarters, thirds, and halves.

For us mere mortals, mental math is better when fractions aren't involved. The more ways to leave fractions out the better.
Oftentimes, things aren't subdivided just once but undergo successive or "generational" subdivisions (e.g., land ownership).

Here's the "family tree" of 1000. Fractions are removed and only whole numbers are passed to the next generations.

The result: 6 generations. Image

I had some extra computers lying around and thought I'd spin up an #ethereum node to learn about it.

Compared to spinning up a #bitcoin node, it wasn't pretty. Clunky, complicated, and risky--not a combo you want to see for decentralization.

For Bitcoin, recommended hardware = RPi + 1TB drive (~$200). Umbrel OS is probably easiest setup, which means flashing a drive, plugging in, and turning on. After 2-3 day IBD, you're done.
For Eth, recommended hardware = Intel NUC+2TB drive = $900. DAppNode appeared to be Eth.org's version of Umbrel (ie easy setup), but running through the install was *more* difficult than building a Monero node from the command line. After that, it's 5-7 day IBD.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE 2021 #BITCOIN BULL MARKET

Using 2017 as a Guide

๐Ÿ‘‡
In 2017:

The average baby bear was -32% over 10 days.

The average baby bull was +122% over 34 days.

Both bulls and bears moved the price around 3.3% per day.
To prepare yourself for these kinds of price moves, here's 2017 applied to 2020-2021:

$20k-$50k channel until May.

$10,000/day movements are possible.

$295,000 top on Sep. 10, 2021.
