OLYMPICS LIVE THREAD - DAY 8

A double gold night for GB with gold in two mixed relays - the triathlon and 4x100 mixed medley. These new events suiting us really well....
In the mixed relay triathlon last night GB won a thrilling race. Jess Learmonth did a great opening leg to get us to the front. Johnny Brownlee the fastest leg of anyone in the field to give us a lead and then Georgia Taylor-Brown and Alex Yee were able hold off the US + France.
That was gold 7 and medal 25. A few hours later the swimmers won their 4th gold (the most by a GB team since 1908) in the 4x100 mixed medley. Peaty swam at 56.78 split, faster than his world record, James Guy did a 50 + then Anna Hopkin held off the field. Gold 8. Medal 26.
Emma Wilson has just picked up the third medal of the day in windsurfing. In a close race against the other two in medal positions she just lost out and finished with a bronze. Our first sailing medal and number 27 overall.
Elsewhere our shooters failed to make the finals. Seonaid McIntosh will be disappointed as current world champion. So just the one bronze for GB in this Olympics. Women's rugby 7s lost against France + will go for the bronze medal against Fiji at 9.30am.
In the Eventing GB sit top of the team event after dressage. And Oliver Townend 2nd in the individual. Cross country tomorrow. In the athletics heats, Elliot Giles and Daniel Rowden qualified for the 800m SFs and Cindy Sember for the 100m hurdles SF. Evening session at 11am.
Going to be quite quiet for the next few hours. But rugby, boxing and athletics after 9am.
Oh I forgot to mention that Lauren Price has guaranteed a fourth boxing medal by making her SF. Still 8 boxers going from GB.
Also forgot to mention that the GB 4x100 mixed medley team broke the world record. Also Peaty is only the second British swimmer + first since 1908 to have 3 gold medals. Could become the first with 4 tomorrow. Duncan Scott looking to be the 1st Brit to win 4 medals in 1 games.
Sailing finished for the day. After Emma Wilson's bronze, 5 more boats are still in the top 3. Men's skiff lying 2nd for the medal race in a few days. Women's skiff after a great 1st few races have fallen to 5th. Giles Scott leading Finn class after 5 wins in the last 6 races.
In the golf Paul Casey is sitting tied third two shots off the leader going into the last day tomorrow. Tommy Fleetwood is two shots further back after an excellent 64 round today puts him back in medal contention.
If you're a tennis fan then Djokovic and Ash Barty the men's and women's number 1s will be playing against each other later in the mixed doubles bronze match.
Now it's the women's rugby 7s medal matches. GB vs Fiji in the bronze match and then NZ vs France. I'm hoping NZ win because they all seem so lovely + cool in their interviews and I want to be friends with all of them.
Fiji wins the bronze medal - can't say I'm too sad about that one as they really deserve it. First ever women's medal for them. No rugby medals this time - down from the 1 secured in Rio.
Galal Yafai the 7th GB boxer through to a QF - winning on a split decision. 4 of them already in SFs. The last to try and make the QF will be Luke McCormack shortly but he's up against the big favourite in the lightweight category - Andy Cruz of Cuba.
Some other notable news from the swimming. Caleb Dressel got a big 100 fly WR. Katie Ledecky won another 800m gold - she hasn't lost a 800m for *eleven years* when she was 13. James Guy's split in the relay at 50 secs was the 6th fastest ever. Only Dressel + Phelps ahead of him.
New Zealand win the rugby 7s gold. Ruby Tui is an Olympic champion!

Meanwhile Luke McCormack has unsurprisingly been beaten by Andy Cruz. 7 Brit boxer still in the hunt - 4 with guaranteed medals. Karris Artingstall in her SF later today.
As we close in on the halfway point in the games San Marino (pop 34,000) are currently ahead of India (population 1.4 billion) in the medal table. Remarkable.
A brief pause to note that somehow Denise Lewis is 48.
Athletics coming up. Dina Asher-Smith goes in the first 100m SF in about 15 minutes. It's absolutely not a done deal she gets to the final. Really tough semi including Olympic Champion Elaine Johnson-Herah. Only 2 through by right. Daryll Neita (heat 3) cld make final too.
Don't think that will be fast enough for Dina Asher-Smith to make the final. Only 11.05 - she can run a lot faster than that. What a shame.
Dina is out. Daryll Neita is tied 8th - they might to thousands of a second to decide the last spot.
Neita gets into the final by 10.992 to 10.993. Small margins!
Going to be the three Jamaicans and Ta Lou going for the medals at 1.50pm. Going to be a great race. And hopefully Neita can do another PB as she did in round 1.

Next 100m men's heats. Zharnel Hughes, Reece Prescod and C J Ujah in heats 3, 5 and 7.
Karriss Artingstall misses out on her final by the absolutely narrowest of margins - 3/2 split decision. But she does get a bronze. That's medal 28 for GB.
Wow wow wow - the 100m favourite Trayvon Bromell comes 4th in his heat!
They're changed the first two runners from the heat but not included Jodie Williams which is surprising as she's probably our best 400m runner.
Dina Asher-Smith is also pulling out of the 200m. One of a very few medal chances gone for GB athletics. Must be an injury. Very sad.
Oh god this interview with Dina - it really is such a brutal sport.
Zharnel Hughes and CJ Ujah are both through to the men's 100m semi-finals. Reece Prescod out. It's absolutely wide open. Andre DeGrasse from Canada looked the best but only marginally.
Oh it looks like Prescod got the last fastest loser sport. Don't see him progressing further though. Been watching Dina on Eurosport and she's just astonishingly articulate given what's happened to her today. There is now no one I want to win more in Paris 2024.
She did say she hopes to do the 100 metre relay. Not sure that's a good idea. Albeit that a medal for her after this would be wonderful.
Really strong run by Jemma Reekie to make the 800m final - taking some big scalps in that race. One of a handful of Brits who could win an individual athletics medal with Dina out.
That was stunning by Keely Hodgkinson - who's 19 year old - to win the third 800m SF. THREE GB women in the final. Alex Bell also made it as a fatest loser. First time ever I think.
Poland beat the Americans in the 4x400 mixed relay. Dominican Republic did too. But US didn't use their best runners. GB didn't use their best woman either. Though we lost it on the first leg. Our men's 400m group are v poor at the moment. No one in the individual.
Wow! Elaine Thompson-Herah breaks Flo Jo's Olympic record with a 10.61 to win gold. Jamaican clean sweep.
That is the second fastest time EVER run by a woman from Elaine Thompson-Herah. Only Flo Jo's 10.49 world record was faster.
That's the end of the sport for the day. So disappointed for Dina but still a double gold day for GB. 8 golds and 28 medals now. Compared to 10 golds and 30 medals in Rio at this point and 14 golds/29 medals in London. We won't win as many golds but 60+ medals still v much on.
This is the current medal table. US and China have gone and will be 1st and 2nd in some order. Japan are just about catchable as they're 2nd week is weaker but will likely be 3rd. GB/Aus/Not Russia in a scrap for top 5. GB can definitely get 4th looking at chances left. Image
Versus previous games the GB Tokyo team is up to equal 11th with Sydney with still a week to go.
Will be back a bit earlier with the day 8 preview, before the Lions game. A final big relay swimming chance plus BMX freestyle, golf and Max Whitlock trying to defend his Pommel Horse title. And a wide open men's 100m final.

OLYMPIC PREVIEW THREAD DAY 10

As we move into the second week the GB focused action moves later in the morning (thank god I'm exhausted). Relatively quiet day on the medal front tomorrow before a potentially very big day on Tuesday.
Tomorrow's best chances are in the eventing which comes to its conclusion with the team showjumping at 9am and the individual at 12.45pm. GB sit top of the team competition and Oliver Townend / Laura Collett / Tom McEwen in 1st, 3rd and 6th place individually.
We also have a good chance in the men's skiff medal race at 7.33am where Dylan Fletcher and Stuart Bithell currently lie in 2nd place. Charlotte Dobson and Saskia Tidey sit 5th for the women's skiff medal race at 6.33am, having lost a good position from earlier in the week.

OLYMPICS LIVE THREAD - DAY 9

Late start today as I was up watching during the night and then fell asleep...three medals overnight. Two more in BMX, including another gold, and a historic swimming relay silver for GB.
Charlotte Worthington won a surprise gold in the BMX freestyle beating favourite Hannah Roberts of the US with a brilliant run. (9th gold, 29th medal). Declan Brooks got a bronze in the men's freestyle (medal 30).
In the swimming our 4x100 medley men (Greenbank, Peaty, Guy, Scott) pushed the US all the way. They had to break the WR to beat us. The silver (medal 31) makes Duncan Scott the first Brit to win four medals in a single games. And overall the best GB result ever in swimming.

OLYMPICS PREVIEW THREAD - DAY 9

At the halfway point GB are tracking slightly above predictions - the big medal sports in the second week will be boxing, sailing, equestrian and hopefully track cycling. I don't expect much from athletics, especially with poor Dina out.
Our best chances on day 9 are probably in the pool again - where we have already had our best ever games. The men's mixed medley relay (3.36am) will be Greenbank, Peaty, Guy, Scott - all medalists. A medal will make Scott the 1st Brit to win four in one games.
We also have Ben Proud in the 50m free at 2.30am - who is very unlikely to beat Dressel but has a shot at a medal. And Dan Jervis in the 1500m free at 2.44. A less likely medalist but not impossible.

GOLD FOR GB. WHAT A BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE.
Alex Yee getting back on to Luis's wheel after he shot past him on the bike was the key moment on that last lap. Incredibly calm from someone so inexperienced.
Splits:

Learmonth - 21.16
Brownlee - 20.03
GTB - 21.54
Yee - 20.28

Very consistent and incredibly Learmonth was 20+ seconds faster than either of the men on the swim.

OLYMPICS PREVIEW THREAD - DAY 8

It won't quite be up there with super saturday in London (rowing done, cycling next week) but we already have one medal guaranteed tomorrow and anther 6 chances, 7 if we're being generous, and some potentially golden ones in there.
First up we have more late night triathlon action with the mixed relay. 2 men and 2 women each do a mini-triathlon (300m swim, 6.6k bike ride, 1k run). We have a v strong team and the two gold medal winners aren't competing. A gold medal chance. (11.30pm tonight).
Overnight we have another big swimming chance in another mixed relay - the 4x100 medley. With Peaty on the breaststroke leg it's a real chance for a gold and we qualified fastest for the final but the US used a B team. (3.43am)

OLYMPICS LIVE THREAD DAY 7

Going to start the thread early today and leave it up as I'm going to try and sleep for a few hours now. What a night. Remember I said 3 or 4 medals today would put GB ahead of projections? They won FIVE including a 6th gold medal.
The gold went to Beth Shreiver in the women's BMX. She was not a favourite coming into the Olympics and ended up holding off the double Olympic champion Mariana Pujon of Colombia. Utterly brilliant and then she swore a fair bit in the interview. (Medal 19).
Kye White was 0.01 seconds away from making it two BMX golds. He won the silver but over jumped on one part of the course so could have done it. Still another unexpected medal and suggests the cycling team is in good nick generally. (Medal 20)..
