1/ How to send more cold emails if you have less time?

You can send multiple cold emails (at once) to the co-authors of one paper if they work in different departments/universities.

When I sent 500 cold emails, I didn’t read 500 different papers😉

Moral: Work hard AND smart.
2/ How write a CV that leaves an impact?

Your CV needs to be tailored to the requirements of the lab.

List your skills/experiences/projects in order of relevance to the lab.

To check whether your CV shows what you intend it to show, share your CV with a member of your….
…family/college etc. for ~10 seconds and ask them what they remember the most from it!

If they can’t figure out your best qualities in 10 secs from your CV, how do you expect super loaded selection committee to do that?

Moral: Be relevant and precise
3/ How to save money on applications?

A lot of people don’t know this, but there are many points at which you can save hundreds of dollars or loan requirements.

👉🏻 Ask them if they’ll accept ur old scores on standardised tests?

👉🏻Ask them if u need to take the test at all?
👉🏻 Ask them if they’ll accept a soft copy of your scores instead of the costly ETS-delivered transcripts?

👉🏻Ask them if you are eligible for an application fee waiver?

👉🏻 Ask whether they can support your airfare to the university so that you don’t have to take loan
👉🏻 Your contact person over there is the grad school coordinator.

They are PAID to help and resolve your queries.

They’ll know so many hidden opportunities for funding that you’ll never come across on your own! Use this.

👉🏻 Join Facebook/Telegram communities such as…
… Indians in Chicago/“your country citizens” in “your host city”.

They’ll help you with accommodation finding and some even pay for your security deposit till you get your first payment at the uni.

No need to burden parents, the student community is very strong.

Moral: ASK
4/ Pro tip:

Your potential supervisor has a set of questions they would like to answer.

As a graduate student you are helping them achieve those goals.

Keep this in mind and it will help you propose ideas that meet your as well as THEIR goals!

Moral: It’s a collaboration!
5/ Rejection might be your way to another admit without even applying 😉

If you receive a reject, don’t give up there.

Email your potential superior that agreed to support you to understand where you need to improve.

REQUEST them if they can recommend your app to someone…
else in another department who might have a position open where you could be a great fit!

A lot of students use rejections to create rich networks among professors who hire once “rejected” eventually.

Moral: Keep asking for feedback and networking

How to short list professors for your PhD/ Master’s?

A short thread 🧵

@baba_Omoloro @Oludeewon @Okafor_SC @PhDfriendSana @AcademicChatter @OpenAcademics @LokomoPeter kindly amplify💪🏼
1. There are two ways you can short list professors:

- According to the rank and prestige of the university

- According to overlapping interests.
2. I prefer the second way because when your interests naturally align with that of the prof, it:

- Makes your application (SoP/CV/LoR) more relevant to the program

- Increases your chances of admit

- Decreases chances that you’ll drop out due to misalignment in interests.

Want to enrich your profile for graduate school applications?

Want to embark on a research internship before applying for Master’s or PhD?

The Max Planck Group of Institutes provides you numerous internships.

A thread 🧵

@baba_Omoloro @Oludeewon @PhDfriendSana @Okafor_SC
In May 2020, I won a 2-month long summer internship at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive & Brain Sciences.

This is how I did it:

1/ Visited cbs.mpg.de/career/interns…
2/ Searched through different labs and research groups to find a potential supervisor.

How to get SOLID letters of recommendation for graduate school applications - Part 2 📩

Look at this sample of a compelling LoR from MIT.

A thread🧵on how you can get a similar letter from your prof.
@baba_Omoloro @Oludeewon @Okafor_SC @OpenAcademics @PhDfriendSana @PhDVoice
Believe it or not, an LoR is a tricky document in the application process.

You don't really have control over what goes inside.

But there are ways you can apply to ensure that the letter does have impressive characteristics about you.

Let's dive in ~
⚪️ Assuming that you have a great equation with your recommender, request them to answer the following questions in the letter 👇👇👇

While NOT necessary, publications CAN greatly boost your profile for graduate school applications 📄💪🏼

This is a thread 🧵 on how to write a Review Paper.

Here’s my first-authored, published review paper👇

@baba_Omoloro @olumuyiwaayo @PhDfriendSana @hapyresearchers @PhDVoice
1/ What is a Review Paper?

• Summarises the state of knowledge on a given subject.

- E.g., Talk about the ways in which a particular technology (aptamers) has been used over the decades.

• Highlights gaps/weaknesses in the way the topic has been approached scientifically
- E.g., Despite their efficacy against viruses, aptamers have not been tested against SARS-CoV-2 (this is a hypothetical example).

• Discusses why it is significant to do better research on the topic/Answers why is this topic important?

• Recommends way to improve…..

The INTERVIEW between you & your potential PhD supervisor before formally applying

is really CRUCIAL⭐️⭐️⭐️

But you may blow off this opportunity by not preparing the right way:

A long 🧵 on how to do it RIGHT

@olumuyiwaayo @Oludeewon @PhDfriendSana @baba_Omoloro @PhDVoice
1. Don’t stress too much

If you’ve been invited for a zoom/Skype call, it’s a SOLID sign that they like your research ideas sufficiently.

They may want to assess additional things over the call such as:
• Your ability to articulate your research ideas orally

As a PhD scholar, you need to have engaging oral and written communication skills.

While they are certainly impressed with the way you write about your research, they want to know whether you can speak about it as well.
