QUICK THREAD re: states & covid

Louisiana...

Note: Nearly identical CASE and HOSPITALIZATION rise continues

(thanks @nytimes)
Florida

Steeper HOSPITALIZATION curve
Alabama

Same deal
Missouri

(Appears to be near its peak)
Colorado
(For obvious reasons, I'll be watching this closely)

Look at CASES

SHARP rise now underway

BUT

It has yet to lead to similar increase in HOSPITALIZATIONS
This is why we will need to watch HOSPITALIZATIONS closely

Big question is... Will we see a similar RISE in PATIENT counts?

We've seen a relatively BIG increase last two days

Ideally it's short lived, but will need to watch
In an ideal world right now... even a sharp rise in CASES won't be followed by an equal (percentage wise) rise in PATIENTS

(it's one way to tell you the vaccine is doing its job)

UK's latest wave was nearly as bad, case wise, as its winter wave... yet the patient count was NOT
This is why I stress HOSPITALIZATIONS

and why I will continue to do so.

As vaccine gets into more arms, cases and hospitalizations should, in essence, decouple from one another.

It's why the south US RN is concerning.

QUICK THREAD

Look, I'm just a dopey reporter. And, of course, you shouldn't take my word when it comes to getting a vaccine

If you're nervous... or just somewhat inquisitive...

... of course...

...ask a doctor.

But here's the thing...

DO NOT BE SURPRISED when that doctor tells you to get the vaccine.

Doctors have overwhelmingly elected to get the vaccine themselves. How overwhelmingly?

96% seems pretty high. Right?

ama-assn.org/press-center/p…
Here's the thing...

Of course you should ask your doctor... but when people keep bringing this subject it up...

it smacks of a red herring.

I see it... over and over and over and over in my feed.

WEDNESDAY #COVID19Colorado Update

Headline: (SIGH of relief). Hospitalizations dip.

HOSPITALIZATIONS
covid+ ONLY

today: 367 (down 16)
last week: 297

#9news
CASES

Probably being a little optimistic... but if you look closely you can see a tiny little plateau on the far right.

Yeah. It's early. And "one day don't a trend make"

But will be good to watch this is next few days
POSITIVITY

Look at this as well!

Slight plateau on far right?

(Good news is that fast increase has, at least for the time being, slowed)

DENVER

It's clear Denver is now seeing a steady increase in COVID cases

Nearing 100 in one-week incidence rate

The rise, at least right now, is a bit steeper than the state rise. We should watch that closely.

#COVID19Colorado
Also leading to increased hospitalizations.

Just starting to go up
Looks like the two main drivers...

20-29
and
30-39

Journalists (myself included) haven’t asked enough tough questions about forcing the previously infected to get vaccinated

Yes. I know. It’s recommended

But there’s clearly a level of protection & the assumption they’re massively contributing to spikes doesn’t seem to be true
To be clear…I’ll still follow the guidance that says previously infected are even better protected with one dose.

And I realize the logistics here wouldn’t be easy.

But I think it’s time we ask more questions.

Open to a (civil) discussion below.
I’m also wary of the numerous red herrings the anti-vax crowd has routinely thrown out.

Loads of people simply believed they had COVId, particularly early on. They’re now trying to suggest they’re good when they have no proof that they are.

MONDAY #COVID19Colorado update

Headline: If you're a glass half-full kind of person, it's not all bad news. Sure, patient count is up... again... but cases, while going up, still aren't spiking

Last week: 291

Better than an arrow straight up
