good morning from unceded Darug lands☀️today on #Insiders are Guardian politics editor Katharine Murphy, former Liberal Party staffer and x-murdoch columnist now of 9fax Niki Savva and former Liberal Party staffer and murdoch columnist Peter van Onselen.
the interview is with federal minister for Health and Aged Care Greg Hunt.
This thread is not fact-checked.
I block snitch-taggers, which is a word you can google.
#Insiders
opening spiel: most Australians now [again] locked down. The worsening of the Sydney outbreak, its spread to the regions, Vic and Qld: the reality has set in” says discovery doctrine David. #Insiders
the montage soundtrack is Come Together by the Beatles. As regular watchers would predict, the partisan “clash” over a $300 per [double dose?] vaccination proposal is enthusiastically inflamed. #Insiders
Morrison vs Berejiklian and Hazzard which has been running for weeks and weeks, is finally noted. “The lockdown works when the lockdown works” from our thicko prime minister. #Insiders
#MakingNews: a new covid treatment drug on way. More doses on way, including for children. Vic lockdown may not end in a week. Qld to vax teachers. #Insiders
#TheCurve: Briggs editorialises that we are not seeing any changes to lockdown settings in NSW so we will not see changes in the infection rate. #Insiders
#TheCurve may start to bend if 50% of all eligible folk are fully vaccinated, says Briggs. Today is Super Sunday at Olympic Park, aimed at vaccinating food workers. #Insiders
better news in SEQ? asks Speers. There will be an announcement on lifting lockdown there today. Surge in doses to Qld. Big jump in Vic, where a pop-up vax clinic was established overnight. #Insiders
interview before panel again today. Hunt is asked first up about CMO Kelly calling for a circuit breaker in NSW. What is it? Hunt, as tories always do, recites more of the same. Increased compliance, he says. Vax, stay home etc #Insiders
while Hunt tries to go the emotive plea - the muddled “individuals together” liberal campaign lines - Speers interrupts to say yeah yeah yeah that’s the same message as we have heard for weeks. #Insiders
okay so what’s new, minister? Hunt has memorised some numbers. Asked about the CovidSafe app, Speers says why not look at something like what the UK has? Hunt references the thousands of imaginary dead people that the prime minister is also very fond of #Insiders
where are the brought-forward doses coming from? Hunt says we can achieve a future target big number rah rah rah #Insiders
expecting Moderna in September, subject to TGA says Hunt. Big number big number. This is all claims about future doses. Vaccination nation, he says. We can do this we can do this. #Insiders
what about the Berejiklian goal of 10 million doses? Should she be relaxing restrictions at all in the circumstances? Hunt claims to have read the NSW Premiers words carefully. This is what passes for “hard work” in the Liberal Party. #Insiders
yes but should she be contemplating easing restrictions at all? Hunt says they have always respected individual decisions. He is talking about the “individual decisions” of a woman who claims to take health advice and makes decisions that impact the entire country #Insiders
so [NSW] will keep the lockdown to 70%? This means the national vax target, not the Berejiklian vax target. Hunt says lockdowns are not binary. Restrictions can ease. Speers says you are either in lockdown or you are not. They are both wrong #Insiders
you are asking me to make a decision on behalf of the NSW premier, Hut whines. He defaults to overseas deaths, his happy place. Speers cuts him off. I understand the overseas comparisons says Speers. Now about young people infected in NSW #Insiders
blitz today on younger workers, says Hunt. The same “blitz” that Hazzard pretended yesterday was for HSC students in the 8 LGAs. It was never about their HSC and always about the insecure low paid work they do getting food out across Sydney. #Insiders
children. Hunt says there is an “aged based plan”. Up there with imaginary dead people is how much the Morrison government loves a “plan” to feed to the press gallery. #Insiders
he met with Frewen, says Hunt. Earlier he had met with Chant. Hard work so hard work. Every facility in Australia has a plan, says Hunt, on aged care I think, but it could be anything. They always say the same thing. #Insiders
the shitty deal making [paraphrased]? Hunt says we have sovereign vaccines and imagine if we did not have local AZ manufacturing, to compare our rollout to NZ. He then defaults again back to mass death in Europe and the US. #Insiders
the quiet decision to make people apply to come home if they leave to visit relatives overseas? Sorry I am not across the measure. Border measures are about saving lives, says Hunt. He says the delta variant presents new challenges [nb “new” since April]. #Insiders
Hunt tries again to go the rah rah Aussie Aussie Aussie routine and Speers thanks him for his time. We are not letting the minister campaign on #Insiders time today lol
panel. Let’s go back to Sydney, says Speers. Yes, lets. Murphy notes drily that Hunt did everything he could to avoid answering the question about Sydney targets and restriction lifting. PvO calls the NSW plan “stupid” and “madness” like the intellect he is. #Insiders
there is no circuit breaker, says Savva. There is no magic bullet. Just vax. She has not heard NSW say open slather after 50% says Savva, who fails to note the “one or two doses” statement from Berejiklian. #Insiders
Gladys has always had a different approach says Savva, without noting the huge cost of those bad decisions like locking down about two weeks too late. Van Onselen jumps into say what NSW has done wrong. #Insiders
the under 40s should be vaccinated, agree PvO and Speers. Everyone should be, says Savva. We all chuckle mournfully. It is incredible how discovering who puts food on the shelves focuses the mind. #Insiders
here we go. The $300 thing. This idea has everybody talking, says Speers, without a trace of irony. Clip of Albanese making the case for the $300 proposal and Morrison complaining on behalf of hypothetically offended strayans like a big snowflake #Insiders
Labor do not want to be seen as a government in exile, says Murphy. Yes but Labor have stayed one step ahead on a few things, like wage subsidies, says Speers😳 #Insiders
look I’m not trying to suggest Labor have been Marcel Marceau says Murphy lmao but it has been a while since they differentiated on policy [paraphrased]. PvO says something. Savva says there was no need for the prime minister to take a sledgehammer to the idea #Insiders
we all know there will have to be something, says Savva, reward or punishment. She is unimpressed by the emotive nonsense Morrison wheeled out [at his recent campaign stop masquerading as support for Indigenous health policy]. #Insiders
what do you think of the feds saying let employers sort it out? Murphy says well they indemnified GPs. Do they have to give employers indemnity too? Well certainly that’s what employers want, says Speers. #Insiders
clip of Pat Turner on negotiating recognition in the form of compensation for surviving Stolen Generations. Cross to Indigenous Affairs editor Bridget Brennan. She clarifies the limits on the scheme to Commonwealth Territories and excluding descendants. #Insiders
Brennan says many of the people who were at the Apology are no longer with us. Soeers says Wyatt was resisting and says now the states have to stump up too. The compensation is ACT, NT and Jeeves Bay. #Insiders
The state and territory Indigenous affairs ministers met after that announcement, Pat Turner is a tough person at the table, says Brennan. We had a decade of waste, she says, and that’s what drove people to Uluru to put together the call for a Voice. #Insiders
clip of Scott Morrison avoiding questions on $660 million announced in seats the Coalition wanted to win in 2019. It is called “commuter car parks” but only 2 or 3 were built is my understanding. #Insiders
van Onselen says Morrison will not answer the question nor rule out his $660 million spending decisions method because there is an election looming and he wants to do “it” - buy votes - again. Savva calls the blatant corruption “obscene”. #Insiders
it is David Pope, a back to you David man.
#FinalObservations 1 is Murphy saying that on current data vax rates among Indigenous people are about half (which Brennan also made as final obs last week). #Insiders
#FinalObservations 2 is PvO on the electoral politics implications of NSW outbreaks outside Sydney especially Central Coast seats - implications for the Liberal Party, obviously. #Insiders
#FinalObservations 3 is Savva staring straight down the barrel and reminding everyone that Morrison a/ wanted alleged pedophile protector Brian Houston invited to the White House; b/ refused to admit it; and c/ pretended it was nothing when forced to concede facts. #Insiders
we go out with a clip of President Biden chuckling about a third dose. I missed the alleged joke sorry. #Insiders
this has been another edition of watching #Insiders so you don’t have to 👋🏼👋🏼👋🏼
tip jar here🙏🏼🙏🏼

newspoll presser starting. It is a vaccine comms day. Credibility back up choice is a TGA Professor.
big numbers big numbers, a stump speech staple. The big numbers are his plan. We have more of this and more of that. Repetition rhetoric technique.
he has a plan a plan a plan to get Australians to the end if the grnk. We have vacshinashons, as he said in queshtime today.

up to 177 cases in the wild from 134K tests. These are less depressing numbers than we have been getting this last week. Yes I know a day does not a trend make.
cuz in Tamworth told me last Wednesday that everywhere she goes has been full mask and check in compliance for weeks. Anecdata, but I’ll take it.
I think we did need reassurance that the NSW hospital system is coping tbh. Especially after the devastating news from Liverpool.

up to 176 cases in the wild. Testing numbers are down by about 13,000.
Berejiklian has dropped the pretence that the Homebush blitz was about HSC students in the 8 LGAs - a drum Hazzard banged all week - and says the main focus is to vax frontline food workers.
he doesn’t say so, but Warboys is addressing the beach pics that flooded sm yesterday. Police will patrol beaches, he says, to make sure people are exercising and not gathering.

students in the 8 LGAs will not have F2F education for the foreseeable future. There will be a “flexible model” for students outside the western and south western Sydney LGAs. Incredible how her HSC call just happened to turn out.
call to arms. Drink.
up to 200 of the 291 reported cases were infectious in the community.

Morrison is giving a stump speech.
he fondly lingers long on the 30,000 dead Australians of his imagination.
He repeats his lives and livelihoods slogan that is obviously polling well, presumably because the March 2020 measures polled well.
the actual prime minister thanks an army general for “taking over my job of whole of government” pandemic response. Unusually honest, for Morrison, who is a compulsive liar.

up to 111 cases were infectious in the community. Berejiklian calls this 50, and repeats - as she does every day - that the lower, political comms number is the one she is focused on, because freedom.
correction, up to 129 were infectious in the community. Only 70 of the 199 were isolated for the full infectious period.
it does concern her, says Berejiklian, that 50 people were infectious in the community. She repeats this artificially understated number, and her focus on it. Sounds like the NSW cabinet raked over the decision to broadcast this misleading-at-best figure at length.
