2/ There are two primary reasons a person has decreased eye contact during a lie.
3/ First, diminished eye contact is a classic and highly characteristic nonverbal signal that the lying is a *secondary manifestation* (i.e., the lie comes first — and the decreased eye contact is subconscious *result of* their lying).
4/ Sometimes diminished eye contact is manifested by a looking away from the person(s) to who the liar is speaking. When this happens, usually it is down, and primarily it's down and to *their* right.
5/ At other times it is displayed via an increased rate of blinking — thus, less time looking at the audience.
6/ Another way it shows itself is via longer duration blinking.
7/ At still other times, a person will cover their eyes with their hands/fingers whilst they're lying.
8/ All of the above behaviors are subconscious and secondary reactions to the act of lying.
However, the second primary reason a person closes their eyes while lying is exampled here by Kenneth Copeland...
9/ Copeland closes his eyes, often quite tightly, in an effort to over-ride his Duping Delight response display.
10/ A Duping Delight display is one type of smiling and/or laughing *out of context*. It arises because the liar takes true joy-happiness in *his belief* that he's fooling his audience.
11/ Of course, often many (or even all) of the audience is NOT fooled — but the liar often believes it to be so.
12/ Duping Delight displays are also seen when a person knows that others can see their lie/malfeasant behavior — but they believe because of their money/power/position, that they will not suffer any consequences.
13/ Copeland frequently displays each of these two types of Duping Delight — although these are not exemplified in this particular 25 second video clip. Why?
14/ Kenneth Copeland keeps his eyes closed — often very tightly — when he 'talks to God'. This intense/melodramatic neuromuscular action helps to over-ride the tendency to display Duping Delight.
15/ Moreover, Copeland has a similar behavior of contorting much of his face, in a melodramatic and unnatural manner. Again, this helps to over-ride the Duping Delight.
16/ If you've ever bitten the inside of your cheek in an effort not to smile/laugh — or, say, pinched your leg hard in an effort to self-inflict pain — so that you don't smile/laugh, then you've done a similar thing via another method.
17/ In addition, crucially, the mere act of *not looking at* the person/people to whom you are lying — also helps to reduce one's laugh reflex.
18/ It's comical that Copeland acts as if he interrupts God's thoughts (as if he's growing impatient with God). God can read his thoughts, right? So why would he have to 'remind' God that he "will talk about that"?
19/ Intriguingly, at that very moment (Copeland interrupting God's thoughts) Copeland's facial expression is an amalgam of both anger and disgust.
20/ It's quite telling that the man standing behind Copeland rubs his nose/eye/covers face in response to this particular Copeland-God back-and-forth moment, unaware that he's signaling to us that he also thinks Copeland is lying.

21/ Addendum: There are, of course, many other nonverbal/#BodyLanguage signals of deception/lying — this is but a small sample.

2/ You can watch 10,000 consecutive political speeches, and you'll never see a person grabbing their elbows and crossing their arms during their speech. I've watched at least that many political speeches, and there are just a few people who stick out in my memory.
3/ One is Richard Nixon — at the very end of his "I am not a crook" Speech (delivered on 17 November 1973 and partially hidden by the lectern). Of course, Nixon was indeed a crook and this speech was loaded with body language deception tells.
2/ Just after she crossed the 200 Meter finish line on Tuesday, Elaine Thompson-Herah displayed what is known as a Wide Open Tongue Jut (be careful to not confuse this Nonverbal signal with a Loose Tongue Jut or a Tight Tongue Jut).
3/ The Wide Open Tongue Jut (WOTJ), as its name implies (and are well-exemplified here) is characterized by a momentarily widely-open mouth — with the tongue extending dramatically.
1/ THREAD: Congratulations to #KarstenWarholm, who just won Olympic Gold while setting a truly unbelievable World Record in the 400 Meter Hurdles (45.94).
2/ You'll note Warholm's facial expression — his extremely wide open upper and lower eyelids. At maximum display, the mouth also has a dramatic vertically-oriented oval shape — with little or no visible teeth exposed — indicating true/sincere surprise.
3/ Sudden grabbing/touching the sides of one's head in this context indicates an emotional processing/disbelief.
The intellect knows what has just occurred, however, the emotional brain has yet to process the event.
2/ On Thursday 1 July 2021, Allen Weisselberg was indicted. Along with the Trump Organization, Mr. Weisselberg is facing tax-related charges and grand larceny in the second degree.
3/ In this close-up of Weisselberg's hands, we can see the police used handcuffs with a four-wrist design/variation.
2/ If we look at this image, at first glance we may conclude that both Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden are laughing — and specifically, laughing sincerely — but we'd be wrong. Putin's laugher is feigned, while Biden's is true. But how can we tell this?
3/ One clue is seen in each man's lower eyelids. With sincere laughing as well as sincere smiling, there MUST BE temporary, concave up furrows present in the lower eyelids.
2/ Although the resolution is somewhat less than optimal here, it's notable in this moment, just prior to their hands meeting, Joe Biden is looking Putin in the eye, but Vladimir is not doing the same — rather, he's looking at Biden's hand.
3/ I train CEOs, Politicians, Sales Professionals, Attorneys, Physicians, Directors, Actors, Negotiators, etc., and the low percentage of these professionals who make eye contact during a handshake is astounding.
