I really, REALLY dislike discuss B.O numbers, because for me is the least interesting part of any movie discussion and most people do the stupid thing of think money means quality, but we need to talk about #TheSuicideSquad for a moment.
Look, the point is: #TheSuicideSquad is a REALLY expensive R-rated movie. Is one of these movie what are mostly a bet, knowing the R-rated limitations of the US wouldn't be necessary applied on other places.
We doesnt know how the movie would perform in a no-COVID scenario, and is unfair compare with other recent R-Rated movies release this year (like Conjuring 3 and A Quite Place) for the single reason they didnt have the Delta Variant when was released. #TheSuicideSquad
BUT, that's why HBO MAX are here, to take the wounds of the theatrical window during COVID times. MAX have been the clutch of Warner Bros this period becxause lost money on theaters can mean get more subscribers, but you all know that. #TheSuicideSquad
The thing is: when more a streamer goes, more the parameters of success change. Numbers what was a success then couldn't be major today, but at their time of release make the goal stabilish for that period. #TheSuicideSquad
With that, we doesnt know exactly numbers on streaming, unless the official sources reveal. We have things like Samba TV doing partial numbers, like #TheSuicideSquad got 2.8 millions this weekend.
And i have major issues on metric streaming this way, because these are superficial numbers. Again, this are theatrical measure of sucess applied to streaming, and things didnt work that way. #TheSuicideSquad
Streaming is about about long therm, on what brings you to the stream, and what things make you stay there (by repeating views and/or constant use of the stream). A view doesnt mean a ticket, like people are trying to convince you. #TheSuicideSquad
With that said, the partial numbers of #TheSuicideSquad this weekend are 2.8 million. Mortal Kombat did 3.6M and GVK did 3.3M (all these numbers are from Samba TV, that's why they are partial).
Seen the last major WB project, In The Heights, did 369K on Samba TV, the parameter of success was at least reach 3 million, minimum, in the first weekend. The jump compare with 'In The Heights' are big, but comparing with the biggest numbers, it underperform. #TheSuicideSquad
Even 'Wonder Woman 1984' did 3.03 million, and besides ZSJL is a different movie (because have 4 fucking hours) is the only movie on MAX this year what had a steady month if you compare with others what end decline. #TheSuicideSquad
The thing is: i can see #TheSuicideSquad going lower along the month, and for a project on that caliber, and expectation, these numbers doesnt show a result as good as expected, whatever compare with the things the fans care (like ZSJL) or things what the studio care (like WW84).
I see this as a definitely (another) blow on Hamada administration, because if the numbers are good enough, why not brag about it? Saying most people watched when it drops on the stream, doesnt mean people stay watching during the weekend. #TheSuicideSquad
Easy analogy: there is a store what sell fruits. When you open the store, early at the morning, a good number of people goes to buy oranges. And besides a lot of people bought oranges at the morning, doesnt mean oranges are the most sold fruit of the day. #TheSuicideSquad
But i also dont believe that Gunn is a bone what Warner wanted to drop. There is still the Peacemaker series to show his worth to stay around. But for a movie what should represent the bigger and better ambitions of the Hamada Era, this aint look good, at all. #TheSuicideSquad
And at the end, i have to laugh of Warner hiding numbers of the last 2 DC movies on HBO MAX. Because they dont wanna admit that ZSJL was in fact a smashing hit, and now because #TheSuicideSquad doesnt perform at the way they expected for.
Maybe they have aim high because though the combination of a DC IP + James Gunn in a R-Rated movie could bring 'Joker' numbers, but #TheSuicideSquad isn't 'Joker', at any level, what would make people curious to see it and excited to return.
OK,m #TheSuicideSquad is coming this week, so lets see some reading recommendations before the movie, lets follow it:
Lets start with some classic Ostrander stuff: Juttunheim was introduced in the two-parter arc 'Trial by Blood/Trial by Fire', what also officially reintroduces the modern interaction of team. Essential Squad reading. #TheSuicideSquad
'The Janus Directive': mKobra criminal organization plots to destroy to the world, but not without putting the main governament security agencies of the DC Universe against each other, including Argus, Checkmate and Project Peacemaker. #TheSuicideSquad
@THR OK, some points worth talking:
- is interesting of all PR moves they could do at this point, they chose focusing on comics. Maybe because Fandome 2.0 is imminent, is important make some things clear.
@THR - Lots of talk about South America, international markets and globalizing. Not just casting foreign actors and diretors for movies, but dont be surprise when 'DC Universe' comes internationally real soon.
Is officially August 2021, month of release of #TheSuicideSquad, directed by James Gunn with a stellar cast! Watch the movie on theaters and HBO MAX in August 5th, and a review right after the film release.
Well... lets finally talk about #TheSuicideSquad. Yes, spoilers ahead and no, will not be said nice things about it. Thread follows.
Lets start by the obvious things: if there is a DCEU, it will choose by finger which is canon or not, if still exists overall. The movie cleary exists in its own bubble, and even there is same actors, he chooses by finger what they want from the previous movie. #TheSuicideSquad
Ok lets start by the main difference: the first one is way heavy-centric on the investigation and the mystery of who is Holiday killer, and that not the question aren't made along the movie of who he is, but the Part 2 is WAY more character centric. #BatmanTheLongHalloween
The journey of Bruce Wayne and the different interactions along the second half of the "Long Halloween" is really a heavy examination of why he's fighting for as Batman, and what means for him as Bruce Wayne. #BatmanTheLongHalloween
Lets fulfill this promess and go to work, champ! Lets celebrate the 55th anniversary of #Batman66 movie by looking into all the important movie you should see about the series!!!
Starting of course with the #Batman66 movie, the brithday boy of the month!!! The movie was plan to be a theatrical pilot for the TV series, but Fox didnt want to invest for a movie AND a tv series at the time. [+]
With the growing (and fast) success of the tv series, the #Batman66 movie was done right after season 1 was finish, shot during a month and than released on theaters later on.
