I’ve pushed to have the Minister and the Chief Health Officer front the Committee I chair today because there are too many unanswered questions about lockdown and the path forward - we need to know what the evidence is and what the plan is 🔎 #nswpol smh.com.au/politics/nsw/c…
Democracy needs to keep operating even through crises and lockdowns - transparency and accountability can't just be put aside until later. These remote hearings are part of delivering on that promise. Image
You'll be able to watch live through the webcast link here from 12:30 - we will also live tweet the hearing:

Labor's Penny Sharpe asking when preparations began for lockdown in NSW - says this happened when it was clear contact tracing could not contain Delta
25 June appears to be the date - but unclear the factors taken into account. The Minister saying these went to Crisis Cabinet but refusing to provide them to the public.
Q What advice for stronger lockdown has been provided to the Government?
A it was provided to Crisis Cabinet therefore we can't tell you the details
This is not what "Cabinet in Confidence" is meant to protect @BradHazzard - it's for allowing debate, not hiding the expert advice you're receiving from the community (and then expecting them to just trust you on the details)!
@BradHazzard Q to Dr Chant: Have you given stronger recommendations than what the Government has imposed?
A: Brad Hazzard refuses to let Dr Chant answer.

Hard to infer anything but yes from this performance.
Q What's the advice/modelling being relied upon for the 50% vaccination target for easing restrictions?

A Premier trying to give community hope.

Appears to admit this is primarily a political goal and not based on numbers which suggest above 70%
Q What percentage of health care workers are vaccinated?

A They have taken this on notice. The Minister is of the view that all healthcare workers should be vaccinated.
Q Is the 50% comprised of 50% of eligible adults having had one shot?

A The message is that now we need to have the community access the vaccine.

Again the 50% appears to not be based on the evidence provided to government.
Chant confirms she has not provided any advice on restrictions that should be eased.
Q 16 June first effective transmission of Delta in NSW - why was it another 10 days before lockdown?

A We looked at the exposures and risks along the way - looking back there was a chain of transmission that was not picked up - it was brought under control in SE Sydney
It was then not able to be controlled in SW Sydney
Q Was the UK and Indian experience on Delta fed into the decision making on 12 June?

A Based on best available evidence at the time (not clear this included overseas experience and data), seeding event into West Hoxton was the main unrecognised driver

Here's the Police Commissioner telling police there won't be consequences if they issue fines improperly or illegally - as if even more brutal policing is going to solve a public health crisis!! ImageImage
In what other job would you be given a free pass by your boss to break the law like this, again and again without consequence?! Of course if ordinary community members get it wrong they face massive fines and potential jail time
Anyone in NSW who has been paying attention knows the problem is absolutely not TOO MUCH police accountability! Every year police settle civil cases against them for millions, dollars & police involved rarely face any penalty. Now we see the Commissioner is complicit in this.

Across Australia child protection systems remove First Nations children at grossly unacceptable rates. This repeats centuries of state-sanctioned violence against First Nations families. Now we have another tragic, but appallingly predictable, death. abc.net.au/news/2021-08-2…
The dreadful removal rates of First Nations children is seen by bureaucrats and politicians as intractable and impossible to solve. It’s not.
To reverse the rate of First Nations child removals we need to stick to basic principles:
1. First Nations families, elders and communities know best how to raise and protect their kids. They have 60,000 plus years experience doing this and must be the empowered decision makers.

Parents of young people in Cobham juvenile detention centre are being informed today that an unvaccinated detention officer has tested Covid positive. Has been on shift for ten days apparently. Everyone very anxious. Seeking urgent clarification on this from juvenile justice.
Multiple questions to be answered by Juvenile Justice. Are staff requested to be vaccinated? Are the rumours that there have been anti-vax messages passing from staff to young people discouraging vaccination true? Where is justice health in all of this? We are chasing answers now
Now getting further clarification that it was likely officer was circulating for less than 10 days. Can’t say more than that now.

I’ll be asking questions in the Estimates hearing with the Premier’s department today - it’s so important to not let accountability disappear during crises like these! You’ll be able to watch this live on the Parliament YouTube channel from 9.30am: youtube.com/user/NSWParlia… #nswpol ImageImage

Lawless. Elements of the NSW Police Force are just lawless. We found out very late today that a senior officer at Strike Force Raptor sent out two police to intimidate a solicitor on his way to court to represent a client in a case against Raptor lecc.nsw.gov.au/news-and-publi…
The police waited outside the solicitor’s home early in the morning then twice stopped his car, issued infringement notices and defects, as he drove to town. He took his car home and caught a taxi. The police followed and stopped the taxi too.
They then waited on the street outside his office before the hearing and followed him to court. He was so shaken he told the magistrate what happened and had the case adjourned. None of this is disputed btw.
