"Last week, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) rejected SEGM’s application to share the latest evidence regarding the practice of pediatric gender transition at AAP's upcoming annual conference in Philadelphia in October 2021. /1 segm.org/AAP_silences_d… via @SEGMtweets
"This rejection sends a strong signal that the AAP does not want to see any debate on what constitutes evidence-based care for gender-diverse youth. /2
"The risks of "gender-affirmative" hormones and surgeries include not only the immediate adverse effects of these interventions, /3
"but also the lasting negative effects on bone, cardiovascular health, and fertility, as well as unknown effects of life-long cross-sex hormonal supplementation. /4
"There is also a growing risk of misdiagnosing and wrongly treating young people whose gender dysphoria is a temporary phase of their identity formation /5
"It is not yet known how many of the young people treated today will regret their medical transition, /6
"but there is already evidence of a growing number of young detransitioners: youth who underwent gender reassignment as their teens and young adult years, and who have since come to regret their gender transition and no longer identify as transgender. /7
We urgently need respectful, fact-based discussions of these matters throughout US society. /8

Young people do not reach full cognitive brain development till around the age of 25, yet the B.C. Infants Act says a minor can consent to medical treatments. /2
...most youth who are diagnosed with “gender dysphoria” would otherwise grow up to be LGB, if they are allowed to grow up — Statistically speaking, 75% would grow up to be LGB, and 85% would grow up to be LGB or straight. /3
When will media outlets like @NPR stop being lazy & start doing their job?!
The #EqualityAct is a HUGE departure from the gains achieved in the SCOTUS Bostock ruling & there are meaningful objections to the Act that aren't religious!
"This act would explicitly enshrine those nondiscrimination protections into law for sexual orientation and gender identity, rather [...] 'sex.' However, the Equality Act would also substantially expand those protections." /2
This glosses over an important point:
The #EqualityAct does NOT follow the Bostock ruling which enshrined protections on the basis of sex. Instead of sex, the Act is based on gender identity.
This causes a cascade of damages that affect LGB people as well as women and girls /3
Since @RepCicilline/@DavidCicilline introduced it, people ask us "Why is a group dedicated to LGB rights concerned about the Equality Act? What's not to like about a law that protects people from being discriminated against on the basis of sexual orientation?"
A thread! /1
There are some wonderful (and overdue!) things in the Equality Act that we welcome. Of course!
But while we applaud the parts of the Act that advance LGB rights, we feel that despite being well-meaning, the bill acts as a kind of Trojan Horse for homophobia and misogyny. /2
As a community, the gay movement has waited so long for some of the important changes in the Equality Act, many aren't thinking critically about the trouble contained in it. To be clear, the problem WITHIN the Equality Act is NOT trans people, it is something ideological. /3
Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) & Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) look at the week of Feb. 22 to introduce the Equality Act with a vote expected as early as March./1
