As of now, there is no incentive for the GOP to change, as they are guaranteed electoral votes from conservative states.
Ironically, the Party that worships “the free market” is adamantly opposed to their own policies being subjected to similar evaluation by the American people.
Tangentially, the platonic ideal of “debate” suggests that political ideas are best subjected to the judgment of the public to determine which ideas are stronger.
One crucial difference, however, is that there is no empirical method of determining who “wins” a debate.
DEMS: Police brutality is the problem
GOP: The protests are the problem

DEMS: The pandemic is the problem
GOP: The lockdowns are the problem

The GOP is more upset about the way problems are addressed (which they find inconvenient) than with their root causes.
DEMS: Donald Trump, a compulsive liar who doesn’t understand how anything works, is the problem
GOP: The media is the problem for saying such mean things about Donald Trump
DEMS: It’s almost impossible to explain anything to Trump supporters; they reject everything we tell them, up to and including the 2020 election results, because they’ve been brainwashed by Fox News
GOP: The Democrats are the problem because they are so biased and condescending
DEMOCRATS: The two worst things to happen in the last year were the Coronavirus outbreak and the January 6th insurrection
REPUBLICANS: Our current mission is to furiously fight all of your efforts to ensure that they don’t happen again
GOP: Clearly, the worst thing to happen in the last year is the inescapable trend of woke public school teachers screaming at white children & calling them racists
DEMS: Are you completely sure that is happening
GOP: Let’s yell about it at school board meetings until we’re sure
GOP: We are also deeply concerned with the Democrats’ mission to force masks & vaccines on us, which is part a sinister plot for the Deep State to control us
DEMS: Virtually all new COVID patients are unvaccinated
GOP: I have no choice but to conclude the hospitals are lying
The problem here is that it’s impossible to talk with a Trump supporter for longer than 30 seconds without becoming completely exasperated dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9…
I know this is the Daily Mail, and therefore we have no idea what the View is planning to do. But our two political parties are now defined as Sanity vs. A Firehose of Horseshit, and one wonders what would be gained by balancing the four voices of sanity with a new firehose.
There was much about Meghan McCain I found infuriating & exhausting (search “dreamweasel meghan” for receipts), but her saving grace was that she saw Donald Trump for who he was.
If you’re pro-Trump, your perspective is simply not grounded in any kind of reality.
The only people who truly believe the January 6 investigation needs to be “bipartisan” are the ones who wanted the January 6 insurrection to succeed washingtonpost.com/politics/pelos…
That’s the real ideological divide.
It isn’t “Was Trump responsible for the deadly attack?” We all know that is true.
It’s “Was Trump justified in his interference with the certification of Biden as President?”
Like it or not, the GOP overwhlemingly believes that he was.
I share with you my thoughts at the time, which I concede have not aged as well as I’d hoped.
I had momentarily forgotten that there is no “mainstream” in American politics anymore. We have committed liberals, committed conservatives, and people who simply DGAF about politics.
1. The Cult of Trump is still very much alive and well 2. Your hypothetical scenario would be strengthened with the inclusion of an actual candidate who could beat Trump in an upcoming Republican primary 3. And no, the “shrug” emoji is not a valid substitute
I’m not trying to piss you off, but I am trying to illustrate how thoroughly the Republican mainstream is still very much in thrall of Trump. They don’t see things the same way we do.
Anyone who still supports Trump in 2021 believes one of the following things:
1. Trump won the election 2. 1/6 was not a violent insurrection 3. The violence on 1/6 was Antifa’s fault 4. Even if none of the first three are true, they’re okay with it because Democrats are worse
