The only people who truly believe the January 6 investigation needs to be “bipartisan” are the ones who wanted the January 6 insurrection to succeed washingtonpost.com/politics/pelos…
That’s the real ideological divide.
It isn’t “Was Trump responsible for the deadly attack?” We all know that is true.
It’s “Was Trump justified in his interference with the certification of Biden as President?”
Like it or not, the GOP overwhlemingly believes that he was.
I share with you my thoughts at the time, which I concede have not aged as well as I’d hoped.
I had momentarily forgotten that there is no “mainstream” in American politics anymore. We have committed liberals, committed conservatives, and people who simply DGAF about politics.
In my defense, I implore any of you who remember watching the events of January 6th unfold on live TV, and how unlikely it would have been to reach the conclusion “The GOP will be completely fine with this, and in a couple of months most Americans will forget it ever happened.”
In the past six years, the Republican Party has become the Party of Trump and the Democratic Party has become the Party of Not Trump.
Meanwhile, the “Don’t Care About Politics; They’re All the Same LOL” demographic remains steadfast and unbending.
So were any minds actually changed by Trump’s attempted coup of the American Presidency?
Any Republican Senators in the Capitol Building that day who wondered if the Cult of Trump Always Wins was just maybe getting out of hand?
Anyone wanna hang with Mike Pence and find out?

1. The Cult of Trump is still very much alive and well 2. Your hypothetical scenario would be strengthened with the inclusion of an actual candidate who could beat Trump in an upcoming Republican primary 3. And no, the “shrug” emoji is not a valid substitute
I’m not trying to piss you off, but I am trying to illustrate how thoroughly the Republican mainstream is still very much in thrall of Trump. They don’t see things the same way we do.
Anyone who still supports Trump in 2021 believes one of the following things:
1. Trump won the election 2. 1/6 was not a violent insurrection 3. The violence on 1/6 was Antifa’s fault 4. Even if none of the first three are true, they’re okay with it because Democrats are worse
R: YOU PUSSIFIED LEFTISTS CAN’T MAKE ME WEAR A MASK! THE PLANDEMIC IS A HOAX! IT’S NO WORSE THAN THE FLU! I WILL NOT BE BRAINWASHED BY THE DEEP STATE FAKE NEWS MEDIA! LIARS! LIARS! LIARS!
CDC: How do we get these people to take the vaccine
NRO: Maybe you should be nicer to them
ERICKSON: First Dr. Fauci said we didn’t need to wear masks, & LATER he said we did! How are people who refuse to listen to the CDC in any sort of good faith supposed to know who to trust?
D: That was over a year ago
E: AND IF GLOBAL WARMING IS REAL, THEN WHY IS IT COLD OUTSIDE
R: Clearly it is in your best interest to tailor your pro-vaccine message to reach as many of us as possible, whereas it is in our best interest to stick our fingers in our figurative ears and scream “FAKE NEWS!”
Listen to the backlash against Dr. Fauci if you seriously think there’s a better technique for Telling Trumpers What They Don’t Want to Hear
As a counterexample, remember that Trump was an early advocate of hyroxycholoquine, a malaria medication that was only experimental in the treatment of the Coronavirus. The CDC never endorsed it (and warned of risks), but MAGAts were bullish because it was fully backed by Trump.
GOP: Just for that, we’ll vote for Trump even harder
DEMS: But
NYT: Stop being so condescending, Democrats
TRUMP: (says or does something insane)
There was a Politico article last year which consisted of interviews with multiple Trump supporters in attendance at a Michigan gun show; it featured numerous permutations of this same observation: ⬇️
The “Big Tech” boogeyman is clearly intended to facilitate this confusion, but no.
Facebook & Twitter are simply the end result of the “free markets” conservatives have supported throughout our entire lives.
I also will note that Trump refrained from filing his lawsuits against Facebook & Twitter until AFTER his competing forum (by which I mean “blog”) crashed and burned.
