‼️ TODAY ‼️ TCRP and members of the Rio Grande Valley Welcoming Committee will meet with Department of Homeland Security Secretary @SecMayorkas at 3 pm.

The Committee issued the following statement in advance of the meeting:
“Today, we are sitting down with @SecMayorkas so that he hears what people in the Valley actually need. Leaders from our communities are the ones doing the work day-in-and-day-out to build back better, as @POTUS has promised to do after the cruelty Trump left at our border."
"We hope that Secretary Mayorkas sees today’s meeting as the beginning of a partnership and two-way dialogue in which DHS...meaningfully consults with us to develop policies that accurately reflect the vision and needs of migrants and border communities."
"Those of us in the Valley know the United States is more than capable of welcoming children, families, and adults with dignity, when they arrive at our border seeking protection – because we’ve been doing it for years."
"We have concrete steps @SecMayorkas and the administration can take now to ensure that all those seeking protection have access to a fair and dignified asylum process. Together, we can reimagine our immigration system and our asylum system"
"– and we have an abundance of humanitarian support groups and advocates at the ready, who have the experience we need to get this done. We’ll discuss with Secretary Mayorkas that achieving this vision must start with the Biden administration ending Title 42 expulsions."
"There’s an urgent need to stop the recent flights removing families to southern Mexico — these flights result in expulsions by Mexico into dangerous and remote parts of Guatemala, with no chance for asylum by either country and no humanitarian support."
"These are families who our country has an obligation to welcome. Our work is dishonored by preventable trauma caused every day by the U.S. government returning vulnerable people, including children, to further trauma & violence without a chance to seek protection and safety.”

🚨BREAKING! Finally, a VICTORY for Texas Voters.

After more than five years of court battles, a settlement has been reached in our litigation against the state of Texas for violation of the National Voter Registration Act, commonly known as the ‘motor voter’ law.
With this settlement, current & future Texans now have permanent protections safeguarding their right to register to vote any time they renew or update their driver's license ONLINE. This is an important step toward chipping away at the state's effort to suppress the vote.
In just ten months since the lawsuit forced a fix in September, over one million voters in Texas have taken advantage of this new option and registered online while updating their driver's licenses. That's an average of 100,000 Texans per month using this method to register.

ICYMI, last night the U.S. Attorney General ordered Governor Abbott to rescind his executive order on migrants and COVID-19.

TL;DR: the Department of Justice agrees with us - this executive order is blatantly illegal ➡️ reuters.com/article/us-usa…
We're working with partners and allies to monitor things on the ground. Check out this thread from @FairDefense for a full update on where things stand 👇
First tweet typo correction: the AG urged** not ordered. No federal action on this has happened at this juncture.

BREAKING: we just sued a mob of Trump supporters-alongside @protctdemocracy & @WillkieFarr-who tried to drive a Biden campaign bus off the road in TX last fall. We must take action to deter this kind of #PoliticalViolence before it destroys our democracy

The mob attempt to drive a Biden campaign bus off the road last year was *illegal*. #VoterIntimidation #TrumpTrainTXAttack Image
A mob of Trump supporters in TX used fear, intimidation, and threat of violence to silence their political opponents last fall, but this is not an isolated incident. #VoterIntimidation #TrumpTrainTXAttack Image

The final version of #SB7 keeps horrible provisions from the House and the Senate versions and adds a whole host of new, egregious suppression measures.

The lack of transparency in this conference committee process was equally as egregious. #txlege
“Show me your papers” to Curbside Vote:
Requires drivers of three or more voters to fill out onerous new forms
Driver and all other passengers must exit the vehicle unless assisting voter, no matter the weather or other conditions, while a poll watcher could enter the vehicle.
Requires voter ID for mail ballot applications and mail ballot envelopes AND requires voter ID number on voter reg app must match number on VBM app (example: if you use SSN # on voter reg app and DL on mail ballot app--mail ballot app must be rejected by county).

3 years ago this week, our South Texas team walked into a Federal courtroom where our government separated families through a violent border-wide policy. “Will I see my children again?” asked hundreds.

But family separation was not just a Trump practice. It continues today.
Policies like Title-42, i.e. the forced expulsion of hundreds of thousands of immigrants under the guise of a healthcare law, continue under @JoeBiden. T-42 and toxic @DHSgov practices continue to separate families at the border- our team sees it daily.
Because #FamiliesBelongTogether, we have never stopped fighting separations and continue to reunify families at the border. Even in this administration we have reunified children with their expelled parents, and do so daily for those separated across borders by T-42 expulsions.

UPDATE: just before 4:00am this morning, the Texas House voted 81-64 to advance a version of #SB7. Here's a great rundown of where things stand from the @TexasTribune (1/4)
texastribune.org/2021/05/07/tex…
The final bill appears to be quite different than what we started the night with. It is still NOT available to the public and likely won't be until this afternoon after another procedural vote. It will then head to the Senate, presumably to a conference committee. (2/4) #txlege
This conference committee is worthy of concern. Behind closed doors, lawmakers will be able to pick & choose provisions from both versions of voter omnibus bills: the mystery version the House passed this morning, & the mega voter suppression package the Senate passed last month
