The biggest blunder you can ever make in livestock keeping is choosing the wrong genetics, whether you are in milk production or meat production. If you choose the wrong genetics you have failed before starting
Its important to learn the Art of selecting the Right animal fit for your purpose. if it milk then goat breeds like Saanen, Toggenburg, nubian & Alpine are best, if its for slaughter then borana/somali goats & boer/savanna/Kalahari red are best. But start with native breeds.
When selecting goat for slaughter we look at morphological traits that is the size, shape & structure of an animal. By observation look at the coat of the animal, it should look smooth ,no wounds, the hair should not look rough or sign of hair loss. See images of sick goat skin.
The front legs should look straight , but the hind leg should have a smooth curve and not straight legs. When the back legs too straight that not good, it is called posted legs. See image to be understanding how front & hind legs should look like.
The goat should not have knocking legs/knees.
The goats should have all four healthy limbs and no deformities on his legs
The Doe / female goats should have a pair of healthy udders, no deformities or sweelings or cases of one udder being bigger than the other and they must be symmetrical
The male goats should have a pair of big healthy testicles, symmetrical & avoid situation where the goat have one testicle or or one testicle is bigger than the other or testicle with extreme splitting in the middle, or extremly small. The testicle should not go beyond the knees.
The goats should have a big chest, wide thighs, wide ribs area showing its capacity to carry kids comfortable . Distance from one hind legs to another to be wide, with a straight back and a smooth inclination on its butt about 25° .
Check the eyes to know if the goat have internal parasites. You can easily detect anemia via the eyes . You can use the famacha which shows different eyes pigmentations where deep pink means goat is healthy and pale pink reveals signs of anemia.
The goats should be active not sleepy & not unease and scratching itself all the time because those are signs of parasites on the goat. Watch the goat poop , the droppings should be separate hard lumps , if the poop is watery or bonded together without lumps then the goat is sick
If the goat is covered with watery poop on her hind legs and anus then thats a sign of diarrhea dont buy such goats. At last know to identify age of goats to avoid buying old unproductive goats . You can identify goat age using Goats teeth. See image below
Avoid high breeds at all cost . Always go for pure breeds, because they have a higher hybrid vigor than hybrids. Then you can introduce a different breed later and cross with your goats to get a hybrid. When you cross two pures the F1(first generation) is born better than parents
Hi guys, FOR THE LOVE OF FARMING.
UPDATES ON BOER GOATS IMPORTING !! .
I have recieved an email from a Boer goat exporter company in South Africa. Interesting enough they are quite cheap the problem is, there is a minimum order of 50 goats, @SeruyaFarm@I_am_Gathoni@mkulimayoung
See attached email below...
Hello Respected Brother,
Thanks very much for your interest in our goats. Our esteemed company is willing to establish a long business transaction with you and also we are willing to supply you with our best quality Boer 100 % goats. ......THREAD
Please clarify the following:1 Are the goats for breeding or for slaughter,2- Are the goats for sacrificial purposes.3- A Boer goat is a Landrace animal, hence the export is regulated by an Act. Any export must be sanctioned by the Boer goats bred Society & the Ministry of Agric
@sharonjcheboi@olusegunyemi@SeruyaFarm True. Lets looks this matter from another angle . In USA contract famers (industrial scale milk producers, broilers, layers , ships and pigs) plant their own crops in thousand of hectares so as to have enough grain to last them entire season while manufacturering own feeds why??
@sharonjcheboi@olusegunyemi@SeruyaFarm The reason why they do this is to have a reserve throughout the season so that they may not be caught off guard if they were to rely on supply chain for distribution of raw materials for own feed Making production when the supply chain prices fluctuates with climate and demand
@sharonjcheboi@olusegunyemi@SeruyaFarm The most brilliant man to ever walk on earth was Albert Eistein . He said that you can not solve a problem at the same extent at which you created it. This means the solution to maize crisis may not necessarily be more maize but what else can do as well or better than corn.
-Sweet potato vines for example are very nutritious pig feed if well prepared and preserved. To help reduce production costs of pigs and pig products here is a simple effective ration
Cut 60-100kg of sweet potato vines and spread them dry in the sun for about 30 minutes.
Chop the vines into tiny pieces and mix them with 10 kg of maize germ or pig growers mash.
Sprinkle ½ kg of mineral salt and mix thoroughly.
Put mixture into an airtight 250-litre plastic tank
For the love of farming.
Sustainable Animal feed manufacturering.
In this century with the rising Global warming and reduce farming
Land , it doesn't matter how Good your invention or solution is if it is not sustainable to the environment and humans......thread
We are living in a time of history where there only way to survive is to make the most out of the list. These means proper land utilization, land rehabilitation and economical solutions.
To benefit from manufacturering your own feed for poultry you have to think smart.
1. Scale of production - the larger the scale the more economical, if your capacity is small it will be smart to join hands with other small producers to make it economical viable.
