Welcome to the Sydney Lockdown day 50 ….

Gladystan 11am briefing - New South Wales in the last 24 hours:
- 466 new local cases (worst case numbers yet)
- at least 60+ infectious in the community
- 130,000+ tests (great result again)

Good news - New South Wales now at 50% first Vax doses.

At the risk of repeating myself, mass vaccination was always our only way out - and it was always a race. The vaccination hubs at the Olympic Park should be 24/7 - we should also have 24/7 hubs in north, south, east Sydney as well. Get this done.

Obama's birthday party was a Covid super-spreader event, apparently - why gatherings seem so problematic now (I mean it was obvious but the Obama people were 'special')

Can someone ask Gladys why in August we do not have Vaccination Hubs in north/south/east/west of Sydney going 24/7? The situation is urgent and so must the response be. Ping @DanicaDeGiorgio @cokeefe9

Gladys should just be talking Vaccination now - Sydney is a massive city of ~6m people and we are going to get cases. Our only way out is mass vaccination. Everything should be on that.

[Also the Service NSW IT system needs a massive overhaul.]

Sorry, clearly, we are not in this together. Please stop saying this, Gladys. It was always a lie and we are over pretending otherwise. All of the political and bureaucratic class have been paid every 2 weeks for the last 20 months. No one is fooled.

Ultimately, the Afghans have voted for this future, either by fighting with the Taliban or by not fighting against the Taliban. It is not our task to impose on the Afghans a future that they clearly did not want. We, sadly, wasted precious blood & treasure on a hopeless mission.
In Iraq, the situation in 2006-2007 was salvaged not just by highly kinetic operations against Al Qaeda in Iraq but by accepting the Iraqi Army we were building would secure Iraq only by bringing back Saddam-era officers who could get the job done, in a necessarily 'rugged' way.
In Iraq, we were building on the ruins of an Iraqi state that had some existence going back to the Arab Revolt & an a Soviet-trained Iraqi Army that fought a brutal war with Iran. In Afghanistan, there were no state institutions to build on - it is a frankly primitive place.

Taliban drive on Kabul accelerates (1) ahead of imminent US/Allied troop insertions & (2) to stage for Kabul & embassies capture by Sept 11 anniversary. If so, think Benghazi but in daylight with hundreds/thousands of attackers. Embassies destroying kit/docs. Losing Bagram insane
So much nonsense peddled in media about War esp the "there is no military solution" mantra. This is utter nonsense. The Taliban are proving there are military solutions. The Russians had military solutions in the Ukraine/Crimea & Syria. If you will the ends, you will the means.
Reality on the ground is much more important than whatever pablums you are getting through official channels. Cold weather does not begin setting in ivo Kabul for another 2 months. And, again, the Bagram airfield complex was insanely abandoned last month.

Gladystan 11am briefing - New South Wales in the last 24 hours:
- 345 new local cases (seems to be new plateau)
- at least 65 infectious in the community
- 145,000+ tests (great result)

Gladys needs to start briefing firstly with the Vaccination numbers and the progress to this date to the 70% and 80% targets. That gives us all some hope for getting out of this.

Have always thought Chess overrated as a test of one’s strategic thinking esp clearly - but even so one expects that a grand master player can see, like anyone, what was always blindingly obvious
Imagine being a sentient adult and also thinking that Barack Obama's Vice-President & Hunter Biden's father was just the man to stand up to China & Russia & Iran ..... they wanted to believe & we will all reap what these useful idiots sowed.
The world is a pretty nasty place & nasty countries are run by nasty people. Imagine thinking, seriously, that China will keep whatever climate pact it makes. Imagine thinking, seriously, that having Germany addicted to cheap Russian gas was good .... or sending USD to the IRGC

The Herald is basically running fear pieces by the emeritus dons .... The Herald like the ABC accepts that (not so quietly racist) Boomers who want the Army in (migrant/refugee heavy) south-west Sydney is their core demo

Watching a History Channel doco I recorded ages ago on Caesar in Gaul. The capacity of Caesar to play off tribes and ruthlessly apply force should be taught at military colleges. Also to generate a sustain a Roman Army far from home on a campaign of annihilation and subjugation.
Reading everyone's take on Afghanistan - a complete disaster of counter insurgency's making - one cannot watch this & Caesar's determination to simply annihilate his way through Gaul, even when his Legions operated with extended supply lines into modern Benelux countries
Caesar like any Roman commander, would have been conscious that his Roman expeditionary army was in a very exposed AO. Caesar would have had no time for the counter insurgency/'winning hearts and minds' approach other than in Tacitus's make a desert and call it peace sense
