Most advice on negotiating is useless.

90% of negotiations are won before they even begin.

I went from 0 to VP in 3 years.

Here's what you need to know about getting your next raise and promotion šŸ§µ
1. Every negotiation is won by the side that has less to lose by walking away.

If you're easily replaceable, you're at the mercy of your employer.

If you're not, your employer has more to lose - you have leverage.

But how do you make yourself hard to replace?
2. By making your skillset valuable AND rare.

Most people focus on building a valuable skillset.

But just because you're valuable doesn't mean someone else isn't willing to do the same job for equal or less pay.

Your skillset also has to be rare.
Examples:

A coal miner has a skillset that adds value but it's easily replaceable.

Anyone can be trained to do that job in a week.

A software engineer has a skillset that is both valuable AND rare.

Engineers are extremely well paid because they're valuable AND hard to find.
3. Closed mouths don't get fed.

Many people wait for their managers to give them a raise.

This almost never happens.

Your career and your income are your responsibility.

And it's your job to start the conversation.
4. Track and quantify your impact.

You can't argue with cold hard numbers:

ā€¢ Show them what you've worked on.
ā€¢ Show them the $ impact of that work.

It's hard to deny you a $10k raise if you can show you've generated $100k.
5. Make it a no-brainer

Don't do the bare minimum you need to get a raise.

Make it your goal to add so much value that your manager feels embarrassed not giving you a raise / promotion.

It's in the best interests of both you and your company for you to add that level of value.
6. Don't assume. Don't wait.

Make sure you know what you need to do to get a raise - don't assume.

And don't wait when you know you've accomplished it.

Example below šŸ‘‡šŸ¼
2018 - I asked my boss what I needed to do to get a $10k raise.

She wrote down a list.

I accomplished it in 3 months.

I went back & asked for the raise ASAP.

Conversation lasted 10 minutes.

I got the $10k raise.

Negotiations are 10x easier when expectations are aligned.
7. If you've taken care of everything above..

You've taken care of the 90% of things that will determine your success on the day of the negotiation.

It's finally time to go read the 100s of other threads and blogs you've seen on negotiation tactics for the day of.
Best of luck on your next promotion šŸ™ŒšŸ¼

Performance marketing is dying.

And Marketing Twitter is in suicidal denial about it.

Product-led growth is taking its place.

I've talked to several VPs & founders who are making this shift - I am too.

A short thread on what this means for your career šŸ§µ
Skills like:

ā€¢ Traditional SEO
ā€¢ Paid Ads
ā€¢ Email

are fast getting commoditized, productized, automated and outsourced.
The next generation of distribution is product-led.

SEO is now exclusively owned by product teams at some of the biggest tech companies.

Search and social ads are also being automated at scale by product teams.
