the tragedy of a young mum of three dying at home in western Sydney has not slowed Berejiklian down from her comms for a second.
there is a doctor here to talk about “getting to hospital earlier rather than later”, says Berejiklian, with no mention of the emergency code yellow at Westmead Hospital.
condolences are also offered to the death of a Hornsby man in his 80s, in a hospital, by Barilaro.
the cameo today is Dr Lucy Morgan who cares for covid patients across Concord and Nepean hospitals. Her message is to get vaccinated and that delta is infectious.
This #CovidComms strategy designed by the Berejiklian government - given the news overnight - is just so offensive.
after detailing symptoms, Morgan announces that ambulance for covid is free. Like the test and trace payment, this is a life-saving piece of information, for poor people, that Berejiklian never ever mentions.
we are getting a verbal version of the sick woman ad campaign here.
a lot of covid patients are young and many have young children and partners who are also hospitalised or otherwise require care, says Morgan, and wraps with another vax pitch.
Berejiklian is looking forward to announcing what life will look like for the double vaccinated in September, she says. Cases could go up, they could go down. A verbal shrug. She says “hospitalisation is still relatively low”. Not in Westmead, Premier.
we have the highest number of daily cases in any Australian jurisdiction throughout the pandemic - again - and Berejiklian is standing there going yeah well look numbers eh🤷🏼‍♀️
she palms the Westmead question off to Hazzard who says yeah well it is at the epicentre of the outbreak, as tho this outcome is random happenstance instead of a function of their elitism and class warfare.
as Dr Morgan said, don’t get sick, says Hazzard, a lie. The fucking state of these politicians.
journo: Westmead hospital was put on emergency footing overnight. Can our hospital system cope?
health minister: don’t get sick.
he does not have any concerns at this stage, says Hazzard. Three kids lost their mum last night. Their dad is in hospital. The highest end hospital in western Sydney is on emergency yellow footing. And the health minister “does not have any concerns at this stage”.
different hospitals are under different levels of stress from time to time, says Hazzard, a lie. This glib bullshit is prattled out to obscure the fact that Mona Vale hospital - for example - is not on emergency yellow.
journo: we are hearing from nurses and doctors that they are under enormous stress, not coping.
Hazzard: doctors are frustrated that people are “dragging the chain” by not getting vaccinated.
Q on positive case text messages. Hazzard ad libs for a bit, until Chant steps up to provide actual information about how the text notifications are designed. Police are notified straightaway, so they can get cracking at policing sick people (she calls this “welfare checks”).
Q: we are at 800 or 900 cases a day, the system is clearly under so much strain, are you concerned about complacency because people are being told not to worry about case numbers?
Chant: tells western and south western LGA residents to get vaccinated.
Q: how long will it take to break the chains of transmission through vaccination?
A: vaccination is a choice. People [in the overpoliced LGAs] can protect their communities.
do we need covid girls hospitals?
A (Chant) no. Field hospitals are staging posts. We need oxygen, skilled care, ICU capacity. Please do not delay care. Call the ambulance.
we have the capacity to upscale high level clinical care to ICU, says Chant. Your chance of needing ICU is lowered if you get the vaccine.
asked about future ATAGI advice on 12-15 year olds, Chant continues to repeat her vax comms.
she is not going to comment on the young mum who died in Emerton except to say the matter is before the coroner [adds victim blaming aside I will not repeat].
Chant mentions the “isolation payments”. That’s 12 seconds in three pressers over 10 days on the test and isolate payment.

Warboys is here after all. I missed his update if he gave one. In the last 24 hours there were 524 infringement notices issued. Cases are almost double infringements today.
recreation clarification. Takeaway is not takeaway and picnic in the park. He says pleece are easily up to whatever the situation requires.
the journos are trying again to get Chant to concede that she is advising against re-opening. Chant responds by telling the people of western and south western Sydney to get vaccinated, for our communities. And on that note of pointless bullshit, off they go.
re-upping this excellent analysis from ANU researcher Daniel Reeders on how NSW policy settings concentrate the disease burden on precarious workers and their low income families and households.

by characterising it as a blind trust, he is telling everyone that the political donation is an investment vehicle for his donor/s.
hey remember when Tony Abbott set up an anonymised trust to fund legal actions against Pauline Hanson.

in case #Insiders forgets to devote as much time to catastrophic failures by the NSW government as it did to a speech by the Queensland premier last week, a brief overview: Berejiklian has lost control of the people in eastern Sydney and of the virus in western Sydney.
good morning from unceded Darug lands☀️today on #Insiders are former Liberal Party staffer and 9fax columnist Niki Savva; Ch 10 co-host and columnist Waleed Aly; Guardian politics corro Sarah Martin.
Interview is with shadow minister for education and for women, Tanya Plibersek.
opening spiel: NSW unveils it’s plan to re-open. It is “high stakes” - for some - and the prime minister is cheering the premier on. Other states are anxious. #Insiders

Q: why are people dying of covid at home without being diagnosed?
Hazzard: there are people in large households who want (sic) to go on earning income.
exactly no detail on how to access your become support. The state and federal governments have set up income supports, says Hazzard, and defaults back to blaming people on low incomes in large households.
the NSW government, which has completely failed to control this outbreak, is essentially accusing low income workers in large households of killing their family members by providing for their families.

“many were surprised by her decision” goodness where is that devotion to conflict journalism now.
please do not link me to the newscorp headline. I have seen that clickbait. It will evaporate inside 24 hours.
I had no idea polling shows that approval of Berejiklian is below 50% but fondly* recall lengthy journalistic discussion about a pandemic incumbency dividend when Labor Premiers Palasczuzk and McGowan romped back in and Liberal Party Premier Gutwein just scraped back.

the re-opening of NSW is being run by a woman who does not distinguish essential retail outlets from entertainment venues.
it is her personal choice not to associate with anyone who is not fully vaccinated, which is a thing wealthy people in wealthy areas with unessential jobs can do so that’s nice for her.
handouts to business from the good people of NSW are being touted again today. These are direct vote-buying measures for the Liberal Party base. Meanwhile, the life-saving measures of test-and-isolate payments and ambulance fee waivers for covid patients are NEVER EVER mentioned.

look. Morrison is talking about us, not to us. His summit speech and subsequent campaign comms on it are addressed to males who only need to be told he is doing something for the little laydeez mate, to maintain false “good bloke” self-image and their precious votes.
there is no affordable housing strategy; no serious attempt at law reform; he has legislative amendments designed to HARM single mums before the parliament. This summit tells his misogynist base he is “doing something” about the laydeez. They then go jeez what more do women want.
the vicious Morrison government attacks on single mums, which force women and children to stay in households with violent males and deliberately make income insecurity even worse, are contained in the Social Security* Amendment Bill analysed by Asher Wolf here:
