UPDATE: The fire closest to the Sierra at Tahoe cam is back burning according to trusted sources. However, relative to the past couple days the main front is not far behind.
Side note, it's a strangely beautiful scene this morning. Wish it was just clouds.
UPDATE: 1st helo scout is in the air on the E flank taking a look at areas around Twin Bridges, Strawberry, Sciots Camp, Cody Lake, and points S to Kirkwood. No other flights are on the fire at this time and there is very little chatter coming out of ground crews.
UPDATE: There are conflicting reports this AM on whether fire between Twin Bridges and Sierra at Tahoe is back burn or spot fires. For now all I can say is on the ground sources confirm what we are seeing on heat maps: there is fire in the area. Monitoring closely.
Housekeeping: just heard from a FF that crews are careful to never use the phrase "controlled burn." They use the phrase "firing operation." I will begin using the same to avoid painting the wrong picture. #Caldorfire
UPDATE: Helo already making drops south of Strawberry, dipping at Cody Lake. Air ops have begun. #caldorfire
ALERT: I am now comfortable confirming what we have been hearing. There is well established fire east of Strawberry, south of Twin Birdges. This is dangerously close to Sayles Canyon and Sierra at Tahoe. There is also firing operations happening in this area. #caldorfire
ALERT: Fire is in the ridges above Twin Bridges due north. #Caldorfire
ALERT: Fire is within 5 miles direct from Echo Summit.
UPDATE: Both fixed wing tankers now dumping on area near Leek Springs cam. Two super scoopers are also on scene, will update once target is confirmed. #Caldorfire
Confirmed. Both scoopers are filling out of Salt Springs Reservoir and are dumping just west of Tragedy Springs. 2 helos continue dumping just west if Kirkwood. #caldorfire
Leek Springs showing increasing fire activity to the West. Tankers hitting it hard. #caldorfire
With plumes reaching 20k feet across the fire, pyrocumulous clouds are forming. #Caldorfire
ALERT: Fire is running up canyon walls NW of Twin Bridges on the north side of 50. Fire is crowning. #caldorfire
Another shot off the Leek Springs Cam. What is always remarkable to me is thinking about how massive a fixed wing tankers like this is, yet how tiny it looks in front of a fire of this magnitude. Looking west.
Update: W, fire continues its threat to push into the north fork of the Consumnes. Ground crews working hard to finish new dozer lines. No air ops possible here due to visibility. #caldorfire
UPDATE: Air ops are sending buckets and possibly tankers to the west side to try again. They are hoping by time of arrival visibility will have somewhat cleared here on western front. Will monitor.
ALERT: Evacuations are being considered further around Silver Lake area and authorities are discussing whether to close hwy 88 just to the west here due to rapidly increasing fire activity. #caldorfire
UPDATE: Helos are dropping water on area between Camp Creek and North Fork Cosumnes. #Caldorfire
Thanks for spending time with me this morning, and I appreciate you filling my tip jar. I'll be back shortly with your afternoon thread. Stay safe. ~J
This concludes your morning alerts and updates thread.
Your morning #CaldorFire alerts and updates thread begins here:
UPDATE: We usually can't see flames on the Heavenly cam during the day due to cloud cover. Now, they are close enough to see at night and might even be close enough to break through the smoke today. Check out the pic. Also...
...remember there are vast resources and massive fuel breaks and dozer lines just to the SE of Heavenly between this cam and the fire. Crews are hopeful they can continue guiding the fire S of the resort towards the east. Will monitor.
Good morning. We begin the day with a complicated story of great news and growing concerns. Let's get started.
Your early morning #caldorfire alerts and updates thread begins here:
NE: A massive 100+ ft fuel break was completed in the valley below and SE of Heavenly. Crews are successfully guiding the fire south of here in an E direction. Fire has crossed Trimmer Peek with spot fires growing N of Freel Peek near the Cold Creek drainage.
NE: Moving west through Meyers all lines continue to hold with crews on top of spot fires. Little growth. Up on Echo Summit fire continues to move through unburned areas with crews protecting structures. NW of here we get into the Echo Lakes areas...
Your afternoon #caldorfire alerts and updates thread begins here:
Pilot of a helo near Silver Lake heard a "loud noise" and immediately landed. Emergency canceled. Pilot is safe. Unclear what the issue is with the helo. #caldorfire
ALERT: N, Fire north of hwy above Lower Forni has grown rapidly and is now less than a 1/2 mile from Wrights Lake. Helos have been dumping water and crews are preparing structures for defense near the lake.
Thanks for humoring me this morning on the personal thread. For a general summary of the status of all fronts of the fire see today's early morning overview thread.
Your morning #caldorfire alerts and updates thread begins here:
UPDATE: The #caldorfire has burned over 204,000 acres and is 20% contained. Red Flag Warning continues into the afternoon.
Heavenly continues use of snow guns to spray water across the resort as much as possible. Looking SW the front (red) is approaching the valley. Crews are cutting fuel breaks (green) in an effort to guide the fire SE around Heavenly. Lines are rough approximations.
Good morning. Ops map is in, thermal imaging flight is in progress, and I have reconnected with ground sources so there is a lot to cover this morning. Let's get to it.
Your early morning #caldorfire overview begins here:
E: Starting in Christmas Valley looking N and NE. Double dozer lines have been completed on the E side of 89 from Grass Lake Creek N to Christmas Valley Drive. Crews continue to hold this line and are successfully protecting structures here. There have been...
...brief moments of slopover out to 89 but all of these instances have been quickly brought under control. The primary concern for the structures here is actually from embers coming off the ridge towards Echo Summit but crews continue to manage well...
Your evening #CaldorFire alerts and updates thread begins here:
ALERT: Fire activity has increased in Twin Bridges in unburned areas again. More crews have arrived for structure defense. At least one cabin has been destroyed. I don't have a location.
ALERT: E, Spot fires are growing again on Echo Summit. Several structures along 50 are on fire. Crews are working in extremely difficult conditions to both save homes and prevent further spread.
