1. "People are people"
Story: During WW2, my nan was sent to the countryside. A German prisoner killed a snake and said "I save you"
He was meant to be the enemy, but showed kindness
Lesson: No matter a person's background, how they treat and act is what matters
2. "It's not what you know, it's who you know"
Story: Wherever Nan frequently shopped from, she would always get to know the manager or boss
She bypassed a lot of problems and got great deals
Lesson: Knowing the right person will give you better options and access
3. "The people you meet on the way up, are the same people you meet on the way down"
Story: If someone helped Nan, she would show her thanks with baking, gifts, etc. They were always willing to help again.
Lesson: Treat others how you wish to be treated. Kindness goes far
4. "You can't see around corners"
Story: I often worried with decisions about the future and Nan would always be relaxed with this response
Lesson: You need to act and see how it turns out. If you don't act, you'll never know
5. "You'll be what your meant to be"
Story: I moved to New Zealand when I was 14, I moved out of home during University, I moved to China after University. For any big decision I made, my Nan believe in me and told me to follow the path the universe has laid out in front of me
Lesson: Your life has a destiny. If you listen to the signs and follow, you'll realize it
6. "What the eye don't see, the heart don't greave"
Story: parties, fines, drinking, getting high, my Nan knew about it all. We never told my Mum to save her worrying. My Mum would worry a lot. But, my Nan accepted I was young and told me straight to sort out my own messes
Lesson: some things are better left unsaid
IMPORTANT NOTE: some things you may be avoiding to say to others. It's important to have a person to be able to share things with, but not everyone needs to hear it)
7. "What you worry about tonight will still be there tomorrow. So stop worrying and get some sleep."
Story: In the most difficult of situations, Nan always had a calmness about her. Unless the problem was at hand, she would continue to enjoy herself and have a good sleep
Lesson: Worrying about situations doesn't solve them. It also doesn't help you make decisions. Find a way to calm your mind and then you can act
8. "Nobody owns you, you're your own person"
Story: Nan was the black sheep of her family. She got divorced when you didn't get divorced. She was disowned by her family and moved to London. She fell in love. She travelled a lot and owned a pub.
She had a very eventful life
Lesson: You know what is right for you. Don't do things just because society tells you that you should
9. "Aim to live a life of no regret"
Story: Nan was full of stories. Every time my mates came round she would share them. Her life was incredibly eventful.
Lesson: If you don't live life to it's full, you'll regret missing out on what you didn't do

My Nan was a great example that you could be young at heart, even in old age
If you ever met her, you would love the stories and the jokes she made. She was always there to have a good time and made you feel welcome.
