1) Lakshmi Narayan Mittal was born June 15, 1950, in Sadulpur, Rajasthan.
2) ArcelorMittal traces its roots back to 1976 when Mittal Steel Company was founded.
3) It merged with French steelmaker Arcelor in 2006 to form ArcelorMittal.
Mittal owns 38% of the company and a 20% stake in Queens Park Rangers.
4) In the early 1960s, Mittal's family moved to Calcutta (Kolkata), where his father operated a steel mill.
5)Mittal worked at the mill while studying science at St. Xavier’s College.
He served as a trainee at the mill after graduating (1970) and then in 1976, he opened his own steel mill in Indonesia.
6)After witnessing India win only one medal, bronze, in the 2000 Summer Olympics, and one medal, silver, at the 2004 Summer Olympics, Mittal decided to set up the Mittal Champions Trust with $9 million to support ten Indian athletes with world-beating potential.
7) He donated £125,000 (about $180,000) to the Labour party in 2001.
This created controversy when it emerged that Blair had helped Mittal buy a steel company in Romania, while Mittal's firms supported a U.S. tariff opposed by British steel producers.
8)In 2004 Mittal amalgamated his companies, Ispat International and LNM Holdings, and acquired the Ohio-based International Steel Group.
9) The newly created company, Mittal Steel Co. NV, emerged from the deal as the world’s largest steelmaker.
