BREAKING: A diverse group of 150 American and Canadian organizations write to universities expressing concerns regarding @dghconference, urging them to disavow such a Hinduphobic conference. 1/n cohna.org/org-letter-dgh…
The signatories stated: "we cannot help but feel intensely hurt when universities officially endorse those who have a history of bigotry against the same texts and religious traditions." 2/n
Letter’s signatories include a mix of orgs - from some of the largest Hindu temples & national associations, to interfaith allies, local cultural groups - and represent hundreds of thousands of mainstream Hindus, who live, study & work in communities across the two countries. 3/n
The letter comes in addition to the thousands of individuals – including students, parents and alumni – who sent over one million emails to the universities that are supporting this #Hinduphobic event on the 20th anniversary of 9/11. 4/n
Letter asks the universities to consider WHY @dghconference is being hosted on 20th Anniv of the worst terrorist attack on American soil. By choosing 9/11, conference organizers attempt a false & dangerous conflation of the Al Qaeda, Taliban, & global terrorism with Hindus. 5/n
Letter also points out that this is not an academic conference, but one whose speakers have glorified groups designated as terrorists by the US State Dept. and those who have disparaged Hinduism. 6/n
The scale, volume and diversity of the letter’s signatories shows that, while the privileged organizers and supporters of the #Hinduphobic conference have the megaphones on both academic and media platforms, they DO NOT reflect the broader and mainstream Hindu community. 7/n
Signatories also expressed concerns that the perpetuation of bigoted language by @dghconference and resources which vehemently deny the existence of #Hinduphobia, will intimidate and imperil minority Hindu students and faculty members on campuses. 7/n
The letter also points out instances where Hindu groups & students raising concerns are being singled out, gaslighted & labeled as extremists. 8/n
It observes: "Universities are supposed to be a melting pot for competing ideas and diverse identities. Yet, there is an obvious and growing attempt to silence the voices of practicing Hindus at various universities." 9/n
At a time when privileged academics with tenure are hounding young vulnerable students for something as simple as displaying images of deities in their home offices, it is imperative for univs to ensure their safety & to foster diversity, equity & inclusion for all. Yet, 10/n
...institutional support for bigotry in the name of “academic freedom” achieves the exact opposite effects and legitimizes #Hinduphobia and hatred against Hindus. 11/n

THREAD: Action alert - urge your local and federal lawmakers to call the universities sponsoring the "Dismantling Global Hindutva" Conf. "Academic freedom" cannot be a licensed for bigotry and hate. Here's why 1/n👇🏾cohna.org/us-lawmakers-d…
The Hindu American community has been working hard to engage with various universities and impress upon them the bigoted nature of this conference. However, we also need to engage our lawmakers and elected officials. 2/n
On the 20th Anniv of the #September11 and the biggest attack on American soil, the conf organizers are attempting to deflect attention from real terror and radicalism and are instead dangerously conflating Hindu organizations with Al Qaeda, Taliban and other terrorists. 3/n
As we showed in our letter, the speakers and conference resources have a history of advancing bigotry and #Hinduphobia, disparaging Hindu deities and supporting violent political movements. 2/n cohna.org/dismantlehindu…
One of the keynote speakers has called Shri Rama a "di**head" while another has created a short film that false projects the Ramayana as a racist epic that endorses casteism based on colonial theories. "Scholarly discussions"? 3/n
THREAD - ACTION ALERT: #DismantleHinduphobia. Urge universities to dissociate themselves from the "Dismantling Global Hindutva" conference and not support bigotry against Hindus. Here's why.👇🏾1/n cohna.org/dismantlehindu…
As Hindus, we welcome any open exchange of ideas and the freedom of academics to pursue scholarly inquiry without restraint. However, this conference falsely paints Hindus as purveyors of extremism, actively denies the genocide of Hindu people, and most troublingly...2/n
...labels those who disagree as "Hindutva," which the conference organizers define as Hindu extremism. 3/n
THREAD: Yesterday, @CarnegieEndow, @MilanV released their survey on Indian Americans. As a Hindu American advocacy group, we ask for clarity on a few important points.👇🏾 1/n
First off, the survey contains important on the 4 Million strong Indian American community, including everyday social realities, religious practices, attitudes towards civic and political engagement, social networks, etc. However... 2/n
In an unfortunate display of how colonial categories like “caste” continue to haunt long after the colonizers have departed, the survey attempts to query respondents -but only those self identifying as Hindu-on their “caste”. This defies logic...3/n
THREAD: What do Audrey Truschke and @AnnCoulter have in common? Hatred for Hindus and #Hinduphobia...and randomness on "caste." And, how do you package Hinduphobia, anti-Asian hatred and anti-immigrant hatred in one tweet? See pic below, followed by our response.👇🏾 1/n
Ms. Khilanani’s remarks are outrageous, but not derived from Hindu philosophy or linked to ANY religion. So why drag in her faith & reference “caste” - that favorite millstone hung around a Hindu American’s neck, no matter which side of the ideological aisle they may be on? 2/n
Firstly, @AnnCoulter is simply ignorant. Ms. Khilanani is NOT an immigrant but born/raised in US. But, she is brown, so that makes her a perpetual "immigrant" +unwelcome. It even makes her unrelated religious background a target. This attitude is un-American & breeds hatred. 3/n
THREAD: PART 2. Prof Truschke's #WhiteSavior & victim card complex continues. Trying to paint Hindu groups as anti-Muslim, when we never said anything about Islam in our response to her allegations. #RacistTruschke. 1/n
We respect everyone's right to practice their religion, but not the #WhiteSavior's self-proclaimed right to disparage ours or silence us. 2/n
Again, she tries to create #Hinduphobia and a fake narrative by linking our response and legit concerns about Alabama to "Hindu Right." In doing so, she continues to validate our position of how she is the #WhiteSavior and the queen of Hinduphobia. 3/n
