50 days before #COP26 #ClimateAssemblyUK members are coming to Parliament today to mark the 1st anniversary of their report

The Govt has also published its response to the @CommonsBEIS inquiry on Climate Assembly UK's findings

Lots to say THREAD
First up, if you didn't see this y'day, four of the assembly members (Sue, Marc, Sharon and Tracey) met Sir David Attenborough

Great clip here: channel4.com/news/sir-david…
Sir David said: "the Assembly has been abundantly clear that greater public participation & fairness is needed at the heart of all climate action & ...I hope this govt has heard [that] loud and clear... [that's] one [message] I plan to share with all world leaders at COP26...”
Today 50 more of the assembly members will be meeting parliamentarians and policy makers to emphasise the recommendations in their report, including around govt leadership, fairness, freedom and choice, a cross-party approach & pubic engt
On to the Govt's response to @CommonsBEIS

Some welcome content here including:
1. Govt says it will set out its public engt approach in its Net Zero Strategy
2. It says it has used the #ClimateAssemblyUK report to inform that strategy, the Heat & Buildings Strategy. ...
...the Transport Decarbonisation Plan, and its public engt plans
3. It recognises the need for "inclusive public engt that gives representation to different groups’ diverse needs & interests, as well as their meaningful participation in decision-making" saying it is "vital ...
...to inform the design and implementation of successful net zero policies."
4. Positive words abt public engt & deliberative engt more generally too, incl that they "help improve the effectiveness of policies" as argued in our report w/ @instituteforgov involve.org.uk/resources/publ…
That's all fine but it doesn't guarantee that the Govt's #NetZero public engt approach is going to be any good. So what would a good approach look like? Here are my top five points to look out for, many from our work w/ @instituteforgov:
1. It includes a range of public engt - from info provision & education, to comms, to public participation in shaping policy. Critically, it says *how these will join up* and be coordinated. This mix of approaches is backed by others incl @theCCCuk & #ClimateAssemblyUK mbrs
2. Public engt doesn't happen in a vacuum, so it also needs to be clear how engt will join up w/ decision making timescales, and with the infrastructure and policies that will make climate-friendly lifestyles feasible, fair and easy for people
3. More join-up: this time w/ actors outside of govt, both local & national. The govt needs to get the whole system in the room to plan engt. And share engt results widely
4. The Govt needs to up its capability for public engt & have central coord of its efforts (eg by CO)
5. The govt needs to learn from engt & participation that has happened to-date in the UK & elsewhere, on climate & more widely. Lots more on the participation side of that in our report with the Institute for Govt linked to above
